  2. Spent a few hours getting some things done before upcoming storms arrive and am now settling down for a little listening. Starting off with Duke Ellington “Copenhagen 1964” on Storyville cd. Ellington always lifts and separates me from my frustraton. 600×600 13.9 KB
  3. I like Elsbeth. It's definitely the character, which I have enjoyed since "The Good Wife," though now she's become Sherlock Holmes in many ways, and i enjoy how she is somewhat like Sherlock and Columbo combined. It's a fun show. . . I like fun shows to escape within.
  4. Okay, you've no direct experience. In actual practice, there was a reason and a benefit, and I could not detect a real sonic deficit. There was better cabling available to use, and I could then use an EQ component after the DAC for both analog and digital components. I found however that using the balanced output of the phono preamp yielded slightly better sound than either the analog output with single-ended or the identical sounding HDMI I2S digital output and I got a Goldpoint 2 XLR into 1 XLR switcher to switch betwen phono preamp and DAC into that EQ component and discontinued the digital output.
  5. Just to be clear: It's not an A>D to a D>A conversion within the phono preamp, it's an A>D conversion for either PCM or DSD (your choice) within the phono preamp, and then output digitally to the DAC and converted to an analog signal there.
  6. I read someone mentioning the Concord Maybeck Hall series of cds so I pulled a few out to revisit. This one now: “Toshiko Akiyoshi at Maybeck” Concord cd It’s very good.
  7. I was re-reading some old correspondence with one of my University of Chicago friends about jazz (he’s one of the best pianists and guitarists I’ve ever befriended and had been a music professor at Yale, and is now a music professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor). So I decided it was time for some “Chicago Style” so to speak. Eddie Condon Town Hall Concerts, Vol. 10, Jazzology 2 cd set, first disc
  8. I only managed to hear about half of this yesterday as I was called away and never got back to the stereo (I have not been getting enough listening time lately!) So I’m re-spinning this and really enjoying it. Dave Holland “Dream of the Elders”
  9. Yes it incorporates an imo very good ADC. I now use the balanced XLR output of the phono preamp, but I used to use it with my DAC as at the time that had the best cabling. . . . The sound when routed to and from the DAC is very very close to the analog output I now use. Anyway it is this device, no longer made by PS Audio: https://www.stereotimes.com/post/ps-audio-nuwavephono-converter/ https://www.aspera-audio.com/pdf/manuals/NuWave-Phono-Converter-Owners-Manual.pdf
  10. Now playing Dave Holland “Dream of the Elders” ECM cd I love Steve Nelson’s vibe playing with Holland.
  11. Spinning this one again as its spin this morning was interrupted by a request for Lucinda’s favorite breakfast to be prepared. This is a fantastic listen with this tight seasoned band: Cannon and Nat along with Yusef Lateef in the front line, with Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. Cannonball Adderley Sextet “Jazz Workshop Revisited” Landmark cd
  12. My current transport and DAC combo has given me great sound and reliable performance, I actually have two and both have outlasted cd playersI have had trouble-free at least while giving me more satisfying sound overall--and the DAC allows me to use other digital components if I wish (I used to use it with my phono preamp which outputs DSD via HDMI into the DAC). There are more and more transports available year by year it seems, with a range of prices. I think it may be a good way to go and a good pick for the future.
  13. The (second) expanded version of The Unteleported Man by Philip K. Dick:
  14. Cannonball Adderley Sextet “Jazz Workshop Revisited” Landmark cd
  15. Randy Becker “In the Idiom” Denon cd An interesting ablum sounding not unlike a 'sixties Blue Note session to my ears. Grest recording by James Farber in October 1986. Joe Henderson here, with David Kikowski, Ron Carter and Al Foster.
