  1. It sure sounds nice this morning!
  2. Rather pretty music to start off a cold and wintry day. Once again we didn’t get predicted snowfall overnight, I’m liking this trend! Jan Johansson & Arne Domnérus “Younger Than Springtime 1959-61” Dragon cd Dragon is such a great label.
  3. “Jazz Tribune No. 47: The Indispensable Benny Goodman Volume 3/4 (1936-1937)” 2 cd set, disc 1
  4. I’m following up with a bit of never before heard by me Yes from the expanded reissue cd of “Tormato.” Yes is one of the few rock bands I still give a listen to, and I never realized until last week that they had included nearly another album of never before released material on this “Tormato” reissue. Nice stuff! I’m excited about the big deluxe edition of “Tales From Topographic Oceans” coming next year–that is my favorite Yes release.
  5. Well it’s cold but we dodged a bullet and didn’t get snow overnight that was predicted, so I just cleaned up the car a bit in preparation for a brunch with Texas in-laws that are here for just one more day. Revisiting disc 2 of this excellent new reissue of two Bill Evans albums and many alternates/outtakes. God bless the Plangent Process–I did a brief comparison with an SACD of one of these albums and there’s a subtle improvement in stability and spaciousness on this new release.
  6. Oded Tzur “Translator’s Note” Enja/Muzak Japan cd Oded Tzur on tenor saxophone, Shai Maestro on piano, Petros Klampanis on bass and Ziv Ravitz on drums. Each member makes great contributions to intriguing compositions.
  7. Something very different than my last listen, Ben Pollack Vol. 3, on Jazz Oracle cd. White guy jazz from a band that often had some great players White guy jazz from a band that often had some great players (this volume for example has Jack Teagarden and Jimmy McPartland). An acquired taste perhaps but I acquired the taste last century and rely on this type of music to boost my spirits. And Jazz Oracle always has incredible sound quality for music of this vintage.
  8. Trying something beautiful and focused with this little window of time to myself. . . . Carmen McRae “Alone – Live at the Dug” JVC XRCD24
  9. Up early as Lucinda has an early PT appointment and I’ll soon have to shovel and clear some snow. But first a little listening. “Earl Hines,” Storyville cd 400×398 23.5 KB
  10. The 1964 Mingus material has long intrigued me--I've bought official and unofficial copies of every concert I could find, and really enjoy them. Johnathan Blake “My Live Matters” Blue Note cd “Where do we go from here? What other choices do we have?”
  11. Bobby Hutcherson “Sprial” TOCJ Blue Note cd. Bass – Reggie Johnson Drums – Joe Chambers Piano – Stanley Cowell Tenor Saxophone – Harold Land Vibraphone – Bobby Hutcherson
  12. Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans here. Hope everyone is where they want to be and safe. Going to have to do a little shoveling and clearing soon but just got some time to sit and listen and I’m going to take advantage of it. The system sounds so amazing. . . . Listening to “Somethin’ Else” the lone Blue Note title by Cannonball Adderley for Blue Note records, this time listening to the 85th Anniversary UHQCD from Japan. (It sounds GREAT). This is a fascinating release. Miles is sort of in charge, sort of not, Hank Jones is an amazing accompanist here and interesting soloist, and Art Blakey’s performance here is one of my favorites as far as taste and structural groove. I wonder who was responsible for the arrangements here. This time through I wonder if there was any Gil Evans input, a few points sound to me a little like his work. Anyway, a great album that is hard bop but also swings in a mainstream way, and just pulls one in and keeps one there all the way through. 1000×1000 186 KB On to another Blue Note, this time a 24 Bit by RVG Japanese LP facsimile release of Kenny Burrell’s “Blue Lights Vol. 2” from Blue Note Japan. I really like the sound of most 24 Bit by RVG discs. And the music here is excellent!
  13. I’ve had a very emotional time of late and have been staying away from Mingus, whose music seems to communicate emotion to me–that instinctively seems it would be too much for me now. But maybe not, I saw this on the shelf and wanted to revisit it. This was a powerful period for Mingus music! Charles Mingus “Cornell 1964” Blue Note 2 cd set, disc 1
  14. That's interesting, thanks for sharing. It's among my favorite Shorter as well.
  15. That is Helen Folasade Adu, known as "Sade" in the musical world. One lovely human, English and Nigerian, with quite a voice and great phrasing. (I'm a big fan).
  16. Billie Holiday, “Masters of Jazz Vol. 3” Storyville cd 300×297 9.04 KB Been too long since I listened to some Billie.

  18. Joshua Redman “Timeless Tales (for Changing Times)” Warner Bros. cd Not the best Redman album of the 'nineties but with that band. . . still an interesting listen. Joshua with Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier and Brian Blade.

  23. Wanted to go way back. Some of my eldest family members had Bunny Berigan discs to spin and I associate his music with relatives gathered for fun and food. Bunny Berigan “1938” Chronogical Classics cd 300×298 11.5 KB I’m including a photo of my great-uncle (always just “Uncle”) Arvin “Suds” Selquist, Berigan fan and perpetual prankster, one fine human.
  24. I read some remarks about this release elsewhere and hadn’t heard it in a LONG time so decided to spin this Atlantic cd edition: Yes “Tormato”
