Trying something beautiful and focused with this little window of time to myself. . . . Carmen McRae “Alone – Live at the Dug” JVC XRCD24

Up early as Lucinda has an early PT appointment and I’ll soon have to shovel and clear some snow. But first a little listening. “Earl Hines,” Storyville cd 400×398 23.5 KB

The 1964 Mingus material has long intrigued me--I've bought official and unofficial copies of every concert I could find, and really enjoy them. Johnathan Blake “My Live Matters” Blue Note cd “Where do we go from here? What other choices do we have?”

Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans here. Hope everyone is where they want to be and safe. Going to have to do a little shoveling and clearing soon but just got some time to sit and listen and I’m going to take advantage of it. The system sounds so amazing. . . . Listening to “Somethin’ Else” the lone Blue Note title by Cannonball Adderley for Blue Note records, this time listening to the 85th Anniversary UHQCD from Japan. (It sounds GREAT). This is a fascinating release. Miles is sort of in charge, sort of not, Hank Jones is an amazing accompanist here and interesting soloist, and Art Blakey’s performance here is one of my favorites as far as taste and structural groove. I wonder who was responsible for the arrangements here. This time through I wonder if there was any Gil Evans input, a few points sound to me a little like his work. Anyway, a great album that is hard bop but also swings in a mainstream way, and just pulls one in and keeps one there all the way through. 1000×1000 186 KB On to another Blue Note, this time a 24 Bit by RVG Japanese LP facsimile release of Kenny Burrell’s “Blue Lights Vol. 2” from Blue Note Japan. I really like the sound of most 24 Bit by RVG discs. And the music here is excellent!

I’ve had a very emotional time of late and have been staying away from Mingus, whose music seems to communicate emotion to me–that instinctively seems it would be too much for me now. But maybe not, I saw this on the shelf and wanted to revisit it. This was a powerful period for Mingus music! Charles Mingus “Cornell 1964” Blue Note 2 cd set, disc 1

That's interesting, thanks for sharing. It's among my favorite Shorter as well.

That is Helen Folasade Adu, known as "Sade" in the musical world. One lovely human, English and Nigerian, with quite a voice and great phrasing. (I'm a big fan).

Wanted to go way back. Some of my eldest family members had Bunny Berigan discs to spin and I associate his music with relatives gathered for fun and food. Bunny Berigan “1938” Chronogical Classics cd 300×298 11.5 KB I’m including a photo of my great-uncle (always just “Uncle”) Arvin “Suds” Selquist, Berigan fan and perpetual prankster, one fine human.

I read some remarks about this release elsewhere and hadn’t heard it in a LONG time so decided to spin this Atlantic cd edition: Yes “Tormato”

Woke up early and couldn’t go back to sleep so I’ve decided to spin a disc after watching a little bit from the DVR on headphones.. I’ve chosen Charles Lloyd Trio “Ocean” on Blue Note cd. A good late night/early morning vibe. Sounding so good on the system as it warms up!

Yes, I know, but I wasn't discussing this so was confused. Thanks.

Jonathan Blake “My Life Matters” Blue Note cd Different from this great drummer’s last release, but I’m enjoying it.

Indeed and Collectors' Choice released a 3 cd set of V-Disks so they are out there in okay sound.
-
I've read that none of the Ellington V-Disks were recordings made for V-Disk, they were all other recordings put onto V-Disk. I think that puts them outside the scope of this set. Yes, I found this page. https://ellingtonweb.ca/Hostedpages/DoojiCollection/DoojiCollection-VDiscs.htm The following I found very interesting: "[George T.] Simon, a V-disc producer, asked Duke if he would let the band make V-discs. Duke suggested he 'ask some of the guys'. 'And so I went over to Harry Carney and Lawrence Brown, whom I'd known for years, and asked them. Their reply in essence: 'George, if you are asking us to do this for free as a personal favor for you, of course we'll do it. But if you are asking us to do it for the Army, forget it - not when you consider the way they have been treating our people.'"
-
Well when you have a hit "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" you would HAVE to make a V-Disk for the troops.
-
I think it's possible that all the Goodman V-Disks were reissues of commercial recordings (as the Ellington, Armstrong, Teagarden et al were I believe, for example). I think Mosaic is only reissuing the selections that were originally recorded for V-Disk.

Stan Getz “Sweet Rain” Verve cd A killer session with Chick Corea, Ron Carter and Grady Tate. On my system it sounds best with the “Phase” inverted on the DAC. 300×297 5.3 KB Followed by Susannah McCorkle “Hearts and Minds” Concord cd I’m really enjoying revisiting McCorkle recordings. This was her last release. Not sure what teaser disc you mean but yes, I have the first and third sets (and a Mosaic one as well). Great music.
