  1. Miles Davis “Filles De Kilimanjaro” Mobile Fidelity Lab SACD This album found at the local library shifted my listening world back in '72.
  2. Another cool morning. Going to hit 50 today. Good day to work outside. Starting off with Yes, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Super Deluxe Edition disc 7. This disc features “Single Edits” made by Steven Wilson that I find quite interesting.
  3. Bert played with Mingus which made me seek out a Mingus disc, and chose this one for the great band with Charles McPherson and Bobby Jones. Charles Mingus “Live in Rotterdam 1970” Crossroads cd Great stereo sound!
  4. I’m listening to Eddie Bert “Musician of the Year.” The sort of “house trio” of Hank Jones, Wendall Marshall and Kenny Clarke is always great support. As the cover subtly suggests, there is overdubbing of additional Bert trombone on tracks, which was a novel thing in 1955 (the title comes from the fact that Bert was so awarded by Metronome magazine that year). Eddie Bert “Musician of the Year” Savoy Denon cd
  5. Miles Davis Bootleg Series Vol. 6 “The Final Tour” Sony Blu-Spec CD2 edition, disc 1 A Paris 1960 concert. Excellent sound on this set.
  6. Joel Ross “The Parable of the Poet” Blue Note cd I find Ross a very intriguing writer, arranger and player. This one has a great ensemble: Ross on vibes with Immanuel Wilkins on alto saxophone, Maria Grand on tenor saxophone, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Kalia Vandever on trombone, Sean Mason on piano, Rick Rosato on bass & Craig Weinrib on drums.
  7. Re-visiting this very interesting 2 cd set of Nichols music . . . . Fay Victor “Herbie Nichols SUNG: Life Is Funny That Way” Fay Victor: voice, lyrics, arrangements, bandleader Michaël Attias: alto & baritone saxophones Anthony Coleman: piano Ratzo Harris: bass Tom Rainey: drums
  8. We went to sleep early and I woke up early, my brain started and wouldn’t stop, so I’m up listening to music. I got this two UHQCD set in from The Lost Recordings in Switzerland yesterday and I’ve long wanted to hear these recordings. With Lou Levy (and the great bassist Max Bennett) these recordings sound very similar to the studio recordings recorded at the time by Stan with Lou at the piano. Great playing, excellent sound (purportedly from the original tapes for the first time) and a great way to start the day. UHQCD 1. “Stan Getz at Zardi’s” 2 UHQCD set
  9. Mr. and Mrs. Dizzy and Lorraine Gillespie 1953 Photo: David Jackson/Ebony magazine
  10. The second UHQCD, the 1962 concert. Sound is excellent with Garrison perhaps heard with a bit more “presence” than Workman was on the first UHQCD. . . .
  11. My copy of the 2 UHQCD set arrived today, and I have listened to the first UHQCD disc, the 1961 concert. I have had this material for some years on a Gambit cd, and the sound here is undeniably improved. Clearly, more forward and clear and dynamic.
  12. “Dizzy Gillespie and the United Nations Orchestra” cd
  13. Rain, rain, rain–our dog is not happy. Starting with disc 2 of this one, the Quartet with Astrud. Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto: Live At The Berlin Jazztage 1966
  14. Gary Burton “Duster/Country Roads & Other Places” Beat Goes On cd Two quartet albums with Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes, and either Larry Coryell or Jerry Hahn on guitar. Cool stuff. IMG458×458 61.4 KB Followed by Some of my favorite Pres sideman appearances on this Una Mae Carlisle Chronogical Classics cd, "1938-1941’–I love Una’s singing.
  15. I agree, that is the most horrible aspect. In my case I have lost more friends to distance than death. But the death of my first wife and parents--awful for me.
  16. John Coltrane “The 1961 Helsinki Concert featuring Eric Dolphy” Gambit cd
  17. Yes, I think that is the only source at the moment. It has only just now really been released, I have a shipment on the way to me, should arrive in a few days. Finally--a month ago they messaged me a tracking number and that was marked as delivered and never was. Last week they told me that was a tracking order sent in error (doesn't really make sense that it was shown as out for delivery and then delivered) and that the real order was sent out. Tracking shows it is now in New York, I should have it by the weekend.
  18. Mary Halvorson “About Ghosts” Nonesuch cd I still struggle with Mary’s music. I like this one perhaps most due to the personnel–Wilkins and Brennan are my most valued players. Adam O’Farrill – trumpet Brian Settles – tenor saxophone Immanuel Wilkins – alto saxophone Jacob Garchik – trombone Mary Halvorson – guitar, synth Nick Dunston – bass Patricia Brennan – vibraphone Tomas Fujiwara – drums
  19. Randy Weston “Portraits of Thelonious Monk–Well You Needn’t” Verve cd Recorded June 3, 1989 Studio Ferber Paris France Randy Weston piano Jamil Nasser bass Idris Muhammad drums, percussion Eric Asante percussion
  20. When I pulled out the Sidney Bechet Mosaic to play this one was right alongside so I relocated it to the upstairs as well. This was only available on LP, and it’s a great set in many ways. “Complete Mosaic Johnny Hodges Sessions 1951-1955” LP 1
  21. Warm morning, a bit stuffy. Looking forward to a walk with Tobi soon. Starting off with Chet Baker, “Young Chet,” compilation cd on Pacific Jazz cd.
  22. Howard Wales And Jerry Garcia Live: Side Trips Volume One" Grateful Dead cd Recorded live at Matrix Club, Fillmore Street, San Francisco 1970
  23. Joe Henderson “Consequence–Live at the Jazz Showcase” Resonance 2 cd set, disc 2 Warming up to this one a bit more second time through.
  24. I meant to type Dorham, Burrell is on this as well. I hadn't had coffee yet.
  25. Okay, thanks; I had not seen anyone complaining about that sound, I use discogs but don't read reviews/comments/forum.
