  1. Well, I'm tired of arguing about sound on reissues as it's just full of arrogance and vinegar in some instances and not something objective and qualifiable in most and I'm just so weary of some of the categorical statements made. I agree that the individual volumes of the JSP were good work, but in comparison to the RCA box I feel that their banding together in a slipcase does make them seem a knockoff in comparison to the well produced RCA set, that I think sounds as good if not a hair better. Again that's just a personal opinion. I own both sets. I listen to the JSP at work, the RCA at home.
  2. Yes, good advice to follow.

Black Beings is the one I'm most familiar with. EXCELLENT. Need to investigate others.
  4. Well, I'm not going to pee in the cornflakes. . . . Retrieval I think uses the lp production tapes a lot and they may seem a little duller than some of R. T.'s later work. I still haven't found a version of the Oliver material that really sounds better to me. I've had about three different cd versions, and a few lps and I kept the Retrieval.
  5. The Morton is indeed a great set. To my ears it's much better than the RCA box. I dont know I like them both, and I find them different. The RCA has advantage of original parts and that makes a difference in the final product to my ears. The JSP sounds good, maybe a bit thinner in comparison. Everything is relative I guess. The booklet that comes with the RCA set makes the JSP set appear the cheap knockoff that it is.
  6. I've got almost the entire catalog either on cd or lp. Fantastic music!
  7. Thanks for that tip. Actually, my iPod can hold more than my iTunes in my iBook. . . .I'm just using them both identically now.
  8. Mingus played an amplified bass his final period of recording and performing because the ALS had been sapping his strength.
  9. Yes, great concert! Do you, or anyone else, know where I can download the whole concert? I seems to me some of it has been edited out. This is what I have: Bertha, Playin' In The Band, Loser, Mr. Charlie, Cumberland Blues, Brokedown Palace, Me And Bobby McGee, Hard To Handle, Casey Jones Saint Stephen, Truckin'-> Drums-> The Other One-> Me & My Uncle-> The Other One, Deal, Sugar Magnolia, Morning Dew, Turn On Your Love Light I like this year also, I'm going download all I can find from '71. HMMMMM. . . that is exactly the track list that I have. Probably from the same source. (Internet Archive in my case).
  10. Yes, great concert!
  11. Damn! You forget about the Dead for a few decades and look what happens!
  12. I don't want Connoisseurs. I want RVGs. From the first fifteen years of the label.
  13. Weird Dead moment of the day: I was listening to some Dead rehearsal tapes of 1975 (I think for the SNACK thang) and all of a sudden Weir says "Okay for a quarter: who wrote "Misty"?" This leads to some discussion of Erroll Garner and how he couldn't read music and even led to Jerry playing "Misty" on his guitar. . . . If I had noticed that the last time I heard those tracks, about a year ago, I've totally forgotten!
  14. on the JOS on these RVGs. . . like the looks of these lists, all items I'm glad are out in RVG.
  15. This is strange. . . because I bought a set for a friend and I'm pretty sure he told me he had received a low number (I had preordered), in the low 200s I thought. I'll try to remember to ask him soon.
  16. Damn! And now it's as out of print as the Fillmore Set, and probably commanding even LARGER prices!
  17. I think they were just trying to keep Brad humble. . . You know how it is with the swollen heads of those with low number sets. . . .
  18. Shoot. I was hoping they'd start that series with the "Cassidy" set!

  20. Wow! Hip-O Select is starting a new series of reissues of James Brown Singles! Starting in a few days! As Shawn says, "ROCKIN' GOOD NEWS!"
  21. Maybe. But Rhino seems to like to reissue/repackage stuff. YES, but Rhino is now the outlet for the boys. .. they were thinking of putting out another ten cd set.. . maybe they are primed to have Rhino do it. . . . It's my insane little hope.
  22. Well, yeah. But I found this pretty interesting, at the bottom of the email I received: Grateful Dead Vault News Stay tuned for upcoming details regarding a very special Grateful Dead Vault release on the horizon for late this year. We look forward to sending production updates as they develop in the weeks ahead! I wonder if that is the box set that mysteriously hand an order page and then did not appear earlier in the year?
  23. I'm a big fan of Dakar myself.
  24. Wow, our posts were one minute apart with the news!
  25. Just got a "jerry-gram" that Rhino is putting out a new two cd "Best of Jerry Garcia" that has one studio best of, and a live disc with some previously unreleased stuff. PLUS of course by preordering there are two bonus discs you get, one a complete interview of Jerry by Dr. Demento, another more live material considered for but bumped from the second disc of the "Best of" two cd. And intriguingly at the bottom of the email is THIS: Grateful Dead Vault News Stay tuned for upcoming details regarding a very special Grateful Dead Vault release on the horizon for late this year. We look forward to sending production updates as they develop in the weeks ahead!
