  1. That is a GREAT Duke dvd!
  2. The Bobo Stenson, disc two. . . .
  3. Finished reading he bio of Abraham, which I really found interesting. Then reread Chandler's "THe Hight Window." Not one of his best, but I love to read Chandler.
  4. On cd, pretty good.
  5. With Kitty Kalen
  6. I hear ya. . . .
  7. I have all the stuff that Harold does, and a few volumes of the Masters of Jazz series as well (they even have the soundtrack to the Black and Tan Fantasy film in I think Volume 3). I love all all all the early Ellington (and so much of the Ellington beyond). I can't be unbiased about this stuff. The MCA three cd set is really good and I thought I had read that it was going out of print. . . . That's a shame.
  8. OOOPS thought it was. I watch it on another one all the time. . . .
  9. Hmmm. . . I like Hank's "Three Coins" every cd it shows up on!
  10. Get it. Yourmusic has it. I love the dvd. . . man, I've always loved that short film of Black and Tan. .. Fredi Washington, one of the most beautiful women there was ever, and that beautiful Whetsol trumpet sound. . . .
  11. I hear what you guys are saying but. . . This stuff just doesn't do much for me, even the half a dozen or so live eighties recordings I've gotten my hands on. I just don't enjoy listening to it, nothing really impresses me, the compositions, the playing, lots turn me off (the synthetic elements). It sort of exhibits clearly and inescapably the "cold snakey" elements of Wayne's work that I dislike in any era. Ah well. Lots of other stuff to listen to.
  12. I've never heard any Torme that I like better than the Bethlehem stuff!
  13. I like me some Concords. The Remlers are way cool. I'm enjoying some Tania Marias believe it or not. The Getz material is nice-o-matic. There's more. . . . But I hear what you're saying, believe me.
  14. AND you don't have to think even one and a half times, let alone twice, about buying from Dmitry. It will be a flawless transaction.
  15. The way I would take that statement is. . . if you know any Torme, Shearing, and the Concord label this set would be as you would expect it to be. . . . Me. . . I'd steer clear.
  16. Sure you could! You just sort of walk on TOP of things.
  17. His uncle, not his father, was the one who produced "Strange Fruit." (Probably this was just a typo!) Jim, I'm going to have to use that reminder myself. . . the guy can be so frikkin' annoying. . .
  18. Art Hodes Sidney Bechet John Hardee Port of Harlem Jazzmen
  19. Allan, it's just too bad you didn't see them in '69 or '72!
  20. It's not much like this.
  21. No experience myself, wishing you all the very best.
  22. Many more happy anniversarys of all kinds my fellow former HR person!
  23. This is really stupid. The most popular thread on a jazz forum is about a band , albeit led by a brilliant improviser , which amassed a massive fan base primarily consisting of folk looking for escapes from reality. Jazz is all about courageous response to the cold harsh nature of reality for most on this earth -- not an escape. How many deadheads do I know from my past who destroyed their lives with that "lifestyle" ... ... ok, all my right-[hand fingers all up and now I'm counting on my left. With all due respect, your post seems what's really stupid to me! "Jazz is all about courageous response to the cold harsh nature of reality for most on this earth -- not an escape." Jazz isn't "all about" any such thing. Or any one thing. There are plenty who escaped reality with jazz and who ruined their lives with the same "lifestyle." Great music is great music. I'm so tired of jazz arrogance!
  24. I'm not sure of anyone else but Jack Sheldon is trumpeting on it.
