  1. I hope that is a lot better than the movie. . . which in my opinion bit big!

    Free America

The Shepp, the Wright, and the Emergency are my favorites.
  3. After finishing rereading "The Judgment of Eve" by Edgar Pangborn, I'm reading "The Spartans" by Paul Cartledge.
  4. It's funny, my modified Sony SACD changer (tube output coming straight off the DAC modded by Steve Deckert of DECWARE) makes cds sound so good that SACDs sound hardly much better at all. The difference between cds and SACDs is more pronounced on a friend's Sony player and system. My favortie SACD of all is "Plays W. C. Handy" by Louis Armstrong. This sounds awesome in SACD, better than the cd which sounds just a bit edgier to me. Man. . . it's such great music as well.
  5. I ordered as well. 1973. . . .I'm broke and shouldn't have done this but I can't help myself.
  6. Jim, I really don't think so. LaWanda would have been in her forties when that picture was taken. That model looks a mite younger than that. . . to me at least.
  7. Jim, do you mean "The Bronze Goddess of Fire"? http://www.lamebasement.com/shelter/images/lawanda.jpg
  8. I hear you Mike, Shawn, Jon. . . . I smoked a third of my life, the middle third, and have been nicotine free for sixteen and a half years. Quitting was the hardest thing I ever did, and I think I only accomplished it because I was in one of the happiest periods of my life, paired up with my soulmate in the first blush of solid romance, happy in my work. If smoking is on the decline, that's oh so good.
  9. Yes, that would be nice. . . .
  10. I would go for the current one of Tollbooth B, it sounds pretty darned good. Not likely to be another version soon is my guess.
  11. Yeah, but if you're not assured a good slice. . . or even a slice. . . ?
  12. Where I start to lose interest is "Is that all There Is?" and beyond. . . I still like to spin one of the later albums now and then, but I LOVE the other stuff. The sound of that voice! You know, it's really wild how much my mom resembled the fifties/sixties Lee in a brunette way. Sometims I see pictures (for example the cover of Things are Swingin') and do a double take. And my dad strongly resembed Jimmy Giuffre during this time period as well (and my dad used to play clarinet occaisionally as I was growing up as well, played it during his school years). I've got good jazz image genes I guess.
  13. The Classics just keep getting better and better. I still prefer some other applicable series where I can find them such as the Henry Red Allens on Collectors Classics, the Christians on Masters of Jazz, those awesome Mckinney's Cotton Pickers on Frog, etc. but the Collectors discs keep sounding better and serve a very valuable service.
  14. Baron Von Toolbooth and the Chrome Nun isn't that old an issue and sounds pretty darned good! I've got to get the Crosby soon. . . . My vinyl is CACA.
  15. Yourmusic told me they wouldn't be able to provide it to me. I bought a copy from half.com. . a little pricier, not too much. I always liked the lp and the cd sounds pretty damned good.
  16. I've been listening to the Nance cd. Wow. It's so nice to have this on cd. And as rare as it is this cd sounds better than the lp. The 24 bit remastering by Mantis Evans and the transfers by Kevin Bartley are very nice!
  17. That's what I wrote. He's got long romantic commutes ahead of him.
  18. Hmmm. . . it might have been in the "Babes" thread. . . . A picture already says a thousand words!
  19. I own some Bear Family sets. . . it's a great service they do for artists like Nellie Lutcher and Ella Mae Morse who I love but whose catalogs are neglected by the owners. I'd buy this set if I was rich, just to have all that Nat stuff; I suspect I would like some of those novelty songs more than Jim. . . . But I'm not rich enough to get this one! I'd probably buy that Nashville r and b box before this one. . . .
  20. Do I remember the 5000 post. YES. Just don't remember what it was!
  21. I guess I just love Ellington so and the Hinesian take, even conservatively, on the numbers just so pleases me. And there are moments where it is just somethin' else I must say. I was going to dig out all my "late Hines solo" stuff and listen and see if I could contribute more, but I discovered that the late stuff that I have is predominantly NOT solo! Holes to plug. . .over time. (My purchases are going to be spare this year, so will be some time!)
  22. Well, a friend of mine has started dating the distributor rep in Dallas. . . .She's into the r and b side and not so much jazz, definitely nothing that is not mainstream jazz. He heard about this Charles coming out, but he never hears about jazz from her. I'll ask but there's not much hope or chance to be honest.
  23. No, I have not bought any of the new TOCJ 24 bit cds. I'm funny in that I prefer RVGs to the nonRVG TOCJ series in almost every instance. I'm not spending the import dollars now unless there are titles that aren't available domestically.
  24. You know, Description Later is a pretty good name for a jazz outfit!
