  1. No Shit?
  2. I'm a big big fan of this band as well. I'm a Klook fanatic, and I think that Boland was amazing in this band, his arranging and his conception and soloing. I see this as an Ellingtonian extension into the sixties and beyond and I want anything I can get of the large and small ensembles. The Shihab on Argo needs mentioning here as well! I have seen a number of broadcasts listed here and there that I would love to see issued! Maybe someday!
  3. BOBBY JASPAR! Got it about a year after its releases.
  4. I'm a huge Lateef fan. In fact, he's one of my favorite tenors as far as sound and expressive style goes. I'm not able to post much lately but suffice it to say I really like tons of his oeuvre, though I'm not that big a fan of his newagey sort of material. Wish the final bits of Savoy material, and the remaining Impulse titles, would hurry up and make it to domestic cd release.
  5. Just my two cents while I have a quick chance at a computer here at M. D. Anderson: GREAT titles! Wish they weren't Connoisseurs (as I really don't prefer the sound).
  6. Hi Charlieboy! Welcome "stranger"!
  7. Several. The deleted Undercurrent Blues on Capitol. A HEP cd, Benny's Bop. . . which is better still. The session with Mary Lou Williams is a favorite.
  8. One that really means a lot because I can really relate to it in my personal life is "Come Rain or Come Shine."
  9. A new executive staff member of our agency sought me out because he heard I was into jazz and wanted to talk to me about it. First he let me know that he played alto, tenor and baritone sax, had since band in high school, but kept his hands in at it. THEN he let me know that he liked Kenny G and some others. . .the most "jazzworthy" of which was Kirk Whalum. I smiled my way through it all. Told him of the thousands of recordings I had and my interest in jazz from nine or ten decades, and he was . . . surprised I think. Wants to talk more. . . . It's a worthy cause. Cancer SUCKS. You can quote me.

    Yusef Lateef's Funk

I love Lateef. He's funky all over and throughout in one way or another. A good collection of his funkier stuff in the broad sense is the 32jazz two cd set "The Man with the Big Front Yard."
  11. Many more happy ones young fella!
  12. Have you heard his work with Jimmy Scott (especially) and Cassandra Wilson? He comps adequately to my ears, and in the case of the Scott he really arranged a great album with some originality in the accompaniment and the texture.
  13. Hey, if you've got the ten cd box set I agree hang with it, don't follow my on and off compulsion to upgrade. "Dreams." I just noticed that before reading your post. I've sort of had a bit of a sleep deficit lately and it shows!
  14. I like Karrin. She's perky? Guess so. I like her better than Diana Krall.
  15. The Verve material is full of gems. Man, Sweets Edison KILLS on about half the material, and there's nearly two discs of him paired with Ben Webster both supported by Jimmy Rowles and that is some of the best jazz about. And Billie is astonishing on some sessions. I love the session with Chico Hamilton on dreams. "Love Me or Leave Me" is just fantastic.
  16. I've had to spend a lot of time in waiting rooms lately in another city and reread a lot of detective novels and this has me on a binge. . . Read a bit of A. A. Fair, Charles Willeford, Ross McDoanld, Rex Stout. . . . Now on Rex Stout's "The Golden Spiders."
  17. I have only one Kurt Elling disc. . .. Only one AEC. Wow, I envy some of you. . . so much to discover!
  18. Yes, both the Columbia lps and the Storyville are great! I love listening to Wild Bill.
  19. Sorry. . . . I don't think you'll regret it especially if you don't have much of this music elsewhere.
  20. Okay, the packaging . . . well I kind of like the metal box but the accordian-like holders for the discs are sort of silly. . . . The music. . . Wow. I love the remastring by Bob Irwin, at least on my system it's dynamic and tonally just right and lets the music breathe. And I'm enjoying this music all over again. The sound helps, it's much more alive than the ten cd set I've had a long time. And Billie is really gripping me. And these sidemen are just creme de la creme. The booklet has photos I have flat never seen before. . . ! I wouldn't have gotten this except that www.yourmusic.com picked it up and for 36 dollars I'd recommend this to any jazz vocal fan.
  21. That Pee Wee Impulse has MARSHALL not Lawrence Brown. It's good but my favorite Pee Wee is earlier Pee Wee, especially in Condonite settings. What a musical mind! My favorite clarinetist. (I guess people have an aversion to Chicago style, "dixieland" etc. but I love that stuff when done right).
  22. Ah get lost! No, kidding, welcome!
  23. I agree with Ed and you. I like Jacky, I like his Blue Notes with one exception, I think I have them all, and I think I have his sideman jobs for the label too. . . . I too don't like the one with Harris. . . !
