  1. Bebop is what you get when you subtract C Jam from A Train.
  2. I'm not here to defend Wynton, at all. And I like some of his work, the stuff that didn't sell. I just think that Columbia probably was happy with Butler and he was following the memoes closely. Could be wrong.
  3. I don't know anything specific. . . he probably made more than Woody did, that would be my guess. As far as I can tell (with no insider connection at all and from hindsight and from impressions at the time), Columbia didn't really care much about the quality or the nature of the music as long as it could bring in dollars and for those reasons Butler suited their purposes.
  4. Well, I think they are testing the waters. They may even be surprised at how quickly the 10,000 sold. They probably felt that there was a bigger market for the 3 cd version that would supplement but not duplicate the cd of the original lps. . . . I would imagine they didn't feel that a ten cd set would be such a popular item. And this made it safe for them: over time they figured they could easily sell 10,000 and they could make them, distribute them, not have to store them long, etc. Fiscally this was probably a comfortable venture. My guess is they will rethink their strategy before the next release; it may not be limited edition, or be a time frame or a larger number of limited items.
  5. One of your best, Ron!
  6. I've got this one. . . somewhere. Need to find it and listen to it; I remember it as being pretty good, and it sure is better than some lps that have been reissued. I think that all those lps produced by Cannonball for Riverside put together would be a nice pacakge. I remember being told some tale of Paul and a gangster's moll that was pretty scary and funny at the same time, but I forget all the details.
  7. Seems to me he made money for the company. Which is all the company cares about, ultimately. Wynton was a novelty act star, in a way that Woody would never have been. Those Miles albums did quite well, may have turned away some old fans but brought neophytes into the mystique.
  8. I have all his appearances with Mingus and the two Savoys, and I really like his playing. Really like Willie Dennis as well. And Knepper. Mingus used the best. And Woodman. And Jackson. Etc.
  9. If you see jazz fission happening, kiss your ass goodbye.
  10. Beautiful, moving work. I have the box set. . . not the K2. . . if I were --when I am-- richer I'd/I'll get the K2.
  11. Well, in that case, yes WD, explore that possibility.
  12. Hmmm. . . they may be accepting preorders for the three cd standard retail version that Rhino is offering late next month . . . .
  13. Do you REALLY want to know?
  14. Well, keep the faith. There will be opportunities to purchase. There are probably those who bought this as a speculative venture. And a few will probably be offered for sale for the original price or not much more.
  15. Wow. Many more happy ones Mr. Brown!
  16. Nice letter. Just the right amount of desperation! There probably have been others. Here's hoping. . . .
  17. Quite possibly. They do have a winner on their hands!
  18. One thing for sure: since they can sell 10,000 units in such a short burst of days, there will be more projects like this! Maybe there will be some good box sets from my favorite time period, '72-'74.
  19. Yes, I'm glad I preordered! Wow. Not really surprising, but. . . wow.
