I prefer the most recent version to the first cd version as well, and find it listenable. Such great music!

Could be Wilcox, and he's been active through the nineties and into the 21st century! (I've got a great private recording of him backed by Danny D'Imperio and his father, Pete D'Imperio). Berigan, that was Wilcox on that Bix documentary. Rank was from Cincinnati and was a presence there in the seventies, and did play in Whiteman's Orchestra (poor guy, simultaneously with Tea!)

I personally wouldn't want to be without this. It is depressing in some ways yes. In other ways though I like the playing on most of this. . . I don't know how to explain it. I sit down and play the piano sometimes and I don't know I "feel" this one in a way I don't some of the others. I feel some Monk in here too. I had the Fresh Sounds cd but got a Toshiba cd that has two additional tracks. I AM a Powell completist; I have everything I've seen, all the Mythic Sounds, etc. But it's not the only reason I have this. . . . I actually like to listen to it at times.

I'm in posession of most of this material; I probably WILL buy this eventually, but I'm not going to buy it right away.

I've got both Roulette boxes. I prefer the Roulette material myself, BUT I have almost all this Norgan/Clef etc. material and enjoy it as well. The Roulette sports a homogeneity that this one won't quite have. . . . Still, there's lots of great Basie, both before and after these sets. If you don't have the Decca material within the three cd set I think that is more essential to have than this upcoming Mosaic. . . . TIMELESS music.

My parents should have just named me "Jim." On every other board I've ever been on I've used my real name in some form (shortened first, proper first, shortened first and last) but for some reason when I came here I wanted to use "jazzbo". . . was feeling fun to discover this place and I just have let that stay. My grandfather was a banjo player in the teens and twenties and I always liked this mechanical toy from pictures, racist as it may be construed. (I'M no racist, I just like the image and vibe I get from it of itinerant seat of the pants life; I've had my share of that). Most here know that I'm "Lon Armstrong" and I'll reveal it to anyone who asks. Really after the huge JCS broohaha (I had someone sending me nasty messages about ten times a day during that time and posting ridiculous things about me including that I "smelled like poopoo!") (how could they know?) and subsequent scuffles on other boards I fully understand why others have used handles for security reasons. By the same token, using my real name in one form or another has brought me many benefits in friends and rareties and companionship and sympathy and opportunity.

I still don't know what my parents were thinking when they named me jazzbo. . . .
