  1. My wife votes. . .but she's just a kid! (A 48 year young kid!) She votes for the two whose performances she likes most each week. . .She's quite good about that, doesn't always vote for the same people week by week. Last week she voted for La Toya and Fantasia. . .
  2. Hmmm. . . I entertain no such hope. . . I really doubt that they will!
  3. I'm sure there are influences back and forth between these two. I'm not an AEC fan, somehow, I've never been able to really appreciate them, maybe one day. I'm crazy about Ra. I think it's the centrality of the vision of Ra's music that is one major difference between them: sort of the difference between a composer and his orchestra (Ra) and a collective group of creative musicians doing THEIR music (AEC). . . . This has shaped their work differently at the core I think.

    Jobim

A trumpeter friend of mine says he sometimes thinks that Jobim was some sort of sachem/seer that pulled melodies out of the air from ancient civilizations that resonated with human racial memory in the minds of listeners. . . . Sometimes when I listen to Jobim, especially really early in the morning when most of the rest of the city is comatose (us old farts find sleep difficult often) . . . I really do know what he means!
  5. Well, my favorites are always gone by this point in the competition. I do think that La Toya was becoming a bit. . . boring. There I said it. She's a great singer. . . she belongs singing musicals on the screen or something. . . she'll do fine. But to keep Jasmine over her? It sure seems weird. Then again, to boot Jennifer Hudson and leave John Stephens in the lineup was whack. It seems a bit more whacky than usual this year. . . and that may be the thing that keeps me watching from this point on. . . . (That and my wife!)
  6. The Complete Redheads on Jazz Oracle The new Mary Lou Williams on Chronogical Classics The new Valaida Snow on Chronogical Classics
  7. I have the Moody on lp, and it's well worth hearing! I just got a few of the last batch. . . I really like the Zoot Sims with Joe Castro a lot!
  8. I don't see any influence. The AEC is from Jupiter, and Sun Ra from Saturn. WORLDS APART.
  9. Miscellaneous Music, 24% I account for 2.96% of ALL posts. SCARY!
  10. Finally have the new cd of this. Additional tracks are all trio tracks, with Percy Heath on bass and Tim Kennedy on drums. The sound is okay. . . not a great improvement over the lp itself. . . it may even be an lp transfer that has been cleaned thoroughly. Great music!
  11. Wonderful news Tom! Thanks for sharing!
  12. Well, Fantastic Burrito did the best performance if you ask me in her first song, followed by Diana DeGarmo in her second performance. . . . Overall, I'm glad we're getting near the end. After Jennifer and George departing, I'm much less interested.
  13. YES!
  14. I must say, without doubt that I am happy about that.
  15. Later. . . .
  16. I'll have to get back to you on this one. . . .
  17. Clearly I am not certain
  18. Maybe
  19. Yes.
  20. I'm Batman. Welcome back.
  21. Well, I'm not one who disparages Miles' chops; I think you are on to something real when you say "He didn't choose to play that way all the time". . . (to paraphrase your phrase). I believe that Coltrane was a presence that caused Miles to react in a different way than he did with Stitt, or Mobley, or Shorter, or Grossman, or Leibman, or. . . . I think Miles tailored his playing to the music and the musicians he was playing with in a more studied way than many/most of his contemporaries. Of course, that's just my personal thoughts from a three decade listening experience. . . .
  22. Alright Marty! Now you LOOOK like a Newk Nut!
  23. I personally don't think the VMEs are "much better" than the box set. An improvement. . . yes. The Japanese 24 bit cds are better to my ears on my system. I voted for "At Basin Street."
