    Speaker buzz

The Infinitys may have been better, but were they more EFFICIENT? I. e. did they get more volume out of a watt of power? If they were not as efficient as the new speakers it is possible the new speakers are revealing these sounds for the first time. If it is not a noise from the circuitry of your components it could be a ground hum or a ground loop noise from the antenna for the tv receiver, etc. . . . It's hard to isolate these things, and I'm not a good resource for ways to do so. A good power conditioner MAY help.

    Speaker buzz

There's a strong possibility that what you are hearing is the hum or buzz of the amp or preamp or other equipment upstream from your speakers. Speakers of high efficiency will reveal equipment noise such as amplifier or preamplifier hum, tube "rush noise", etc. quite well, noise not previously heard with speakers of medium or low efficiency.
  3. Well, my wife bought this for me for Xmas. . . BUT I wont' be able to open it til Xmas! It's sure giving me impetus for Xmas to be here! I don't have all these masters. . . . I have most of them, but this will be an upgrade in sound, and supply me with the remaining masters I need.
  4. I've never had those sets, but I have that music, and I agree: it was very important to put them out and I'm so glad they did! I think the first decade and a half of BN's history was something else!

    Astrud Gilberto

I LOVE "Quiet Nights." I often think I am in a minority, but I wish that one had been brought to fruition because I LOVE what there is. Singing it as she hears it, yeah I bet she does. Her "intonation problems" really don't bother me. . . . Non-"western" musicians and music often to me dances to a different sense of "in tune." I can dig it.
  6. Blue Lake, this was a premature post, the one that started this thread; in a later post she noted the cds have been taken down for now. Keep checking, they should show up soon.

    Astrud Gilberto

There are many better singers from Brazil and of Brazilian music. . . a statement who knows Astrud herself may agree to. But I enjoy many of her recordings. The sound of her voice is very nice.
  8. Brad describes the label well. I like the label more and more as I realize how great a service they are doing by doing this chronolgical crosslabel reissue program. And they sound better and better all the time as they come out. They are also into the modern jazz era now, which puts them on a lot of person's radar. I should have ordered the Cozy Cole! This time I ordered a Billy Taylor, a Sammy Price, a Marsala and a Mezzrow.
  9. Thanks for the announcement, premature or not. . . . I placed my order! I've bought DOZENS of these the last time they were offered . . . .

    Clare Fischer

I have three or four of his Pacific Jazz titles, and they're great . . . I especially like his debut trio recording!
  11. Okay whatever. I'm not completely sold, but you are. Cool. I see less of an issue of his use of this word, and I actually DON"T always know precisely what Jim or Chuck mean, and I know just how carefully Jim sometimes doesn't put together his words, but hey that's me. You have a different view, Cool.
  12. Lady Sings the Blues: Organissimo does Nichols! (Yeah, I can see 'em sweatin' already!)
  13. From websters.com: a·le·a·to·ry ( P ) Pronunciation Key (l--tôr, -tr) adj. Dependent on chance, luck, or an uncertain outcome: an aleatory contract between an oil prospector and a landowner. Of or characterized by gambling: aleatory contests. also a·le·a·to·ric (l--tôrk, -tr-) Music. Using or consisting of sounds to be chosen by the performer or left to chance; indeterminate: An object placed inside the piano added an aleatory element to the piece. Now yes, in MUSICAL terms it doesn't necessarily mean taking chances. But using the word in in a nonmusical form it can. So it's interesting that the word can have different meanings in different contexts. And he could have meant risktaking . . . though usually speaking in music it wouldn't mean that. . . he seems funny that way with his prose. He did not strike ME as talking down to ME.
  14. Hey I can supply an address too!
  15. Do you think he mean aleatory to mean "taking risks"? It fits that way for the jungle style. I don't really disagree with your statements about the book, none-the-less I thought his prose and its tone were fun.
  16. Yes, the Thornhills are available, I still see them about in my cd traveling. The one to get in my opinion is the HEP cd of 1947 transcriptions: better sound, fantastic performances. I would say my favorite transcriptions may be the Ellington World Transcriptions that are available on Circle cds remastered by Jack Towers. FANTASTIC. Many others in this series on Circle are well worth hearing: Jonah Jones (with Ike!), Sammy Price, Bill Challis, Chick Webb, John Kirby. . . . World had wonderful original sound that is transferred very well to cd in this series.

    Water Records

That 12 dollar price is going to be hard to beat. I think these list at 14.98; I got mine about 11.99 from cduniverse by preordering them. . . . Good price at dusty.
  18. Buy a Real Doll, body type 4, maybe one body type 7 as well if there's room, and hope the REAL Sadass doesn't find me.
  19. I think of it as spirituality. Spirituality of its time, and timeless. . . . I think it is sincerely meant and about spiritual and metaphysical matters and ideas, and that makes it spiritual to me. Amazing orchestrations!
  20. This is a fantastic session, been a favorite of mine from the first minutes I heard it! I love Svend's tenor violin (I think that is what it is) here and I have sought out others of his, and I really am a big fan of his playing. I'm not the hugest of Grapelli fans, but he turns out a great performance here. And Nance has always been a favorite, on violin, on voice, on trumpet---he was an amazing player so full of warm sound. From the recording I also get an impression that this was a project that Ellington was excited about as well. (I like the offshoot sessions he produced for Reprise, this, the Bud Powell, the Dollar Brand and the Benjamin). This is a great session and a highlight of the Reprise set---listen to it SOON Vibes! B)
  21. It's clearly from the Half Note John, and different from the 10:49 version or so that is likely a Birdland performance (?) On this version from the tree (and also appearing an earlier tree product called "Sweet Potato Pie") Allan Grant clearly states that it is the Coltrane Quartet recording I Want to Talk About You live from the Half Note on Portraits in Jazz. . . . It's a clear stereo recording. Quite a good performance, without the squeaking on the shorter version you're familiar with.
  22. John, there has been a recent tree that has circulated which included, among other material, the following: From 3/19/65 Chim Chim Cherre 19:39 Impressions 20:55 From 3/26/65 One Up, One Down 28:13 (inc) Afro Blue 12:40 (inc) From 4/2/65 Untitled Original 23:37 I Want to Talk About You 15:42 Afro Blue 6:21 (inc) From 5/7/65 Song of Praise 20:55 My Favorite Things 23:51 That is the first four discs of the tree; the rest includes Ayler and Coleman funeral music, two interviews (one in Tokyo and one by Kofsky in NYC), 8/1/65 from Comblain, Belgium, 7/2/65 from Newport Festival,7/27/65 from Juan les Pins, and 7/28/65 from Salle Pleyel, Paris, a Downbeat festival appearance and a track from the Penthouse.
  23. Wow, you're not really that old dude, there was that time warp remember? Just outside of Waco late that one night, you drove through that glowing light and suddenly it wasn't 1982 anymore but 2002? I know in Texas it's hard to tell the difference sometimes. Many happy returns!
  24. Yeah you can dare to say that about the Jones-Lewis. I'm inspired by your bravery to say. . . I love half this set, and could pretty much care less about the second half!
