Well, it's grown on me over time, and the mingling of the instrumentation of Harry Partch with the music of Mingus has proven to be the keynote holding its interest for me. Really, I didn't get that man and music thing at all to be any differently than the Monk lps, which I found the interpretations much less interesting than was the case with Weird Nightmare. Maybe it was the huge bass marimbas and cloud chamber bowls that made the difference. . . . Either way I really enjoy Weird Nightmare and even have two copies, an Austrian and an American. Just in case. . . B) Thanks for explaining!

Are you referring to the Robert Herridge show appearance? I can't remember specifically, but I've always thought that "So What" was melodically an answer to "It Ain't Necessarily So." Miles and Gil in the fifties. . . hardly gets better.

What shocking results tonight! My favorite is out. Jennifer I think is the best singer, less bag o' tricks than Fantasia, more innovative than Latoya and George. (All in my humble opinion!) I'm really going to miss her, and a lot of the enjoyment will drop from watching this show now for me. . . . I cannot believe that John Stevens, Diana DeGarmo and Jasmine Trias scored higher this week than Jennifer, Fantasia and Latoya! And that Stevens is still in the game! Amazing!

Man oh man. . . this is such a great set! It's a shame it can't stay in print until 2010 or so. . . .

Okay, I picked this new reissue up, and my curiosity is finally satisfied~! It's a nicely packaged compilation of sides from his Capitol items as was surmised here. The tracklist: 74 Miles Away (from the album of the same name) One for Newk (from Why Am I Treated So Bad) Mystified (aka Angel Face) from Domination) Money in the Pocket (from Cannonball in Japan) One Man's Dream (from Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley) Hippodelphia (from Live at the Club) Yvette (from Why Am I Treated So Bad) Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (from Live at the Club) Ndo Lima (from Accent on Africa) Dr. Honorus Causa (from The Black Messiah) All these are great albums in my opinion and several are among the albums' highlights; so this is definitely a nice collection of great performances, and a nice way to organize them, using the theme of compositions by Zawinul. The sound is pretty good. . . it's remastered by McMaster and has that signature. . . tart and bright. Had I been the producer RVG or Malcolm Addey would have gotten the job, but hey last time I looked my name tag didn't say "Hello My Name is Bob"! Nice packaging with a cool photo courtesy of Mr. Zawinul himself, who had a hand in the selection and sequencing it seems. I love this music. . . Cannon's tone just got so deep and fat and golden in these years, and I like his phrasing and the ideas he came up with. . . . And Zawinul was a wonderful contributer to this group and a large part of its success; his compositions are among the best that the group performed. All these tracks were already in my holdings with the exception of Dr. Honorus Causa, as The Black Messiah is the only of these albums that I don't have. I really really really want reissues of Accent on Africa, Domination, The Black Messiah and Why Am I Treated So Bad to appear in the next few years; I'm hoping this compilation isn't meant to serve as "all we're going to see!"

Yes, with Sinatra and the Rat Pack. . . . I can't enjoy their music, I think the personalities influence that, but I don't find much in the music itself to drag me in. . . .

I'm sorry, I forgot about their recently probably pirated from the Mosaic four cd set; I was referring to the first one, the two cd set of Victor material.

Yes, if only I had been wrong! It was better than some of his performances, but ultimately he doesn't need to be there. More and more for me Jennifer is my favorite. Latoya and Fantasia and George are right up there too. . . but it's Jennifer that does the most moving vocals for me.

The Lang and Venuti does NOT overlap with the Mosaic.

That's true: Bobby Jaspar is indeed just ONE good reason to order this set! I knew he was great before this from Mercury recordings of his as a leader, and sideman work with Hank Jones and others, but his prowess is really evident here; he's working HARD. As is Elvin and Tootie Heath. . . two great drummers, and two more good reasons to buy this set!

I don't think that the Solal date IS on cd. I've looked for it unsuccessfully. I have a number of Chronogical Classics cds from the late forties that are wonderful and have material that are not reissued otherwise, or at least not readily available. Also I have a few of French RCA cds that are fantastic! I'm just buying whatever Bechet I encounter; there is hardly a bad session around! Also, I recommend getting the "King Jazz Records" material that he and Mezz Mezzrow put out. The best way to get this material these days may be to get the cds put out on the Jazzology label by George H. Buck, from the master records. These are the best sounding of the sources I've found. I have these on King Jazz cds from Italy as well, with edgier digital sound, and they are available on Storyville cds, which I have never heard. (Do I really need THREE versions of these? Don't force me to answer that question trutfully! )

Debra Parkinson works for Columbia Records, or at least has done a number of great sounding remasterings for Columbia Records. The sound on this set is ---in my opinion---very very good. Like the porridge that Goldilocks settled on, "just right."

The Gathering is not a "bad" date. It's more "Weather Report" and Wayne Shorter electric Columbia -like than anything else I've heard her do, but some great material on there.

I remember reading that additional songs on tape are lost for the Bethlehem. The JRVGs sound pretty darned good. . . once you correct them for polarity. (I believe oh yes I believe in the polarity problem). Different from the Mosiac, but the Mosaic sounds really good too. . . in a different way. No reason not to just stick with what you have Laton! It would take me hours, maybe a day or more to get to my copies to list content, so here's hoping someone beats me to it!

Very good two cd set, well worth pursuing!
