  1. I don't have the Mosaic, but I have this material. Great stuff. Full of spirit and humor and drive. This was an inspired choice for the Select series. I think you'll find that Bennie Green's Bethlehem, OJC label and other sessions are worth exploring as well.
  2. Mnytime, very well said. I've lived in other countries and seen the reduction of freedom that can mean. Our country came about by dissatisfaction with the government we were a part of, and our country has become a great nation because of the freedom to disagree and speak out. I hope that this can continue for many more generations.
  3. I never really had good barbeque. . .til I moved to the South. Thought I did, but I was WRONG. Some good places here, but really the best barbeque eatings I've had were on a picnic table in someone's backyard. Plenty of great backyard cooks here in Texas! I like brisket, and links too. . .but it's chicken where I find the real artistry lies in the cooking and I've had some fantastic barbied chicken!
  4. Yes, very slick!
  5. Hmmm. . . have to say I haven't considered that! Don't WANT to either!
  6. Well, as she has realized lately that she has too many shoes, she's working on buying shoes for me! I've tried to buy her cds because I know I have THAT problem, but that hasn't worked. I predict her solution won't either!
  7. Good news on both counts; thanks for sharing! And quit lurking, post man, post!
  8. Ooops, no that won't work. I thought about that. If I get the shoes, I'll have to keep the shoes, and wear 'em every day. She's on my ass like fruit of the loom about this sort of thing! And she thinks I have ENOUGH box sets. How did she get that idea!
  9. Mine's "Jazzbo Jim" . . . my greatuncle had one of these in his attic. My grandfather played the banjo as a young man (and organ as an old man). So I liked the handle "jazzbo" and this image as an avatar. Yeah, it harkens back to a time of stereotypes and it's probably not bad to be reminded of that either. My favorite avatar is Kevin's (braggin' just a bit) Let Me Tell You About It, because he tells us all the inside BN scoop!
  10. I have'nt yet picked up this reissue, but this is a good solid release on lp and I'll echo your recommendation. Great playing! This is the kind of "musical" I like!
  11. Here's my two cents: Well, I have it. . . and I listen to it. I find it fascinating to listen to a few cds worth of these at a time. You get into a sort of bleak world with spotlights here and there. Great music, makes you sad to remember the Billie of the thirties and early forties, but she still can knock you over in these recordings. . . . You may well just sit tight where you are. It's probably fine to grab the individual releases here and there now and then. But the box is a worthwhile purchase, especially if you can get it from one of the clubs or used at a good price. I find that the sound is good and holds up. . . .
  12. That's good news. MC should get these back in print; he produced most if not all of them, right?
  13. I went with Sonny. Not my favorite by any means, but . . .he fit the bill best.
  14. Sounds like something distilled in the hills!
  15. Nah . . . the shoes she is thinking of just cost about one box set. She would NEVER buy me the box set.
  16. No, I haven't a copy. About six months ago Bob Belden emailed me the information after I asked him a few questions about what may be on the set. It was very exciting to see it, and I put it I thought into a save folder to save it. . . looking at it made me want to hear it badly! But it appears I didn't save it after all.
  17. I actually received this track listing months ago and was asked to sit tight on it, and did. In fact, I sat on it so tight I lost it! Had personnel information as well. Going to be a very interesting set!
  18. No cake of any kind for me please. I'll just ask my wife to treat me to dinner at the Clay Pit and indulge in a beltbusting meal of chicken korma and their lentil soup.
  19. I absolutely love this set. It's a fantastic document of a festival from the point of view of Duke and Ella's sets there. Amazing music, great sound, and a great booklet too. I KNOW that this is right up your alley, so put it on your list and keep an eye out for bargains. (I'll alert you if my eye sees any.)
  20. Well, I had an offboard friendship with Greg for a long time that turned very sour because of my posting about distortions of facts about the pricing of SACDs that Greg had said on the board. . . . It's all a big shame. Yeah, AAJ could get better in time. . . but by then this place will have outstripped it much further!
  21. Oh no, another nonfunny imitator, the return of Gregore. Sheesh. AAJ. . . it's so DULL compared to this board. I go and I just HOPE for something to post to, and there isn't much. It's a shame because it is more of an international community (maybe? does the fact that Sigmund and Gregore are from outer space boost this board's internationality?) and it really could be a better board than it is. Just my feelings about the place these days.
  22. No kidding, mine is two months plus away, and my wife was talking about buying me a pair of shoes next week. . . aren't we getting old fast enough? (And SHOES?)
  23. Happy Birthday! Many Happy Returns!
