Starting off on disc 1 of this one, as disc 2 was still in the player from last evening. This year’s SFJazz Collective had a funkier yet still swinging vibe. I was not a big Freddie Hubbard fan really until this century, maybe even the 2010s. But I've learned to really dig all his CTI recordings. And I agree . . . that Milt CTI just goes for the gold and it's a real experience every time I spin it. We're all different.

Marcus Roberts “Blues for the New Millenium” Columbia cd It now IS that new millenium. . . and I’ve had the blues. Managing them well though. This is giving me memories of my 'nineties Austin life with my late first wife and our pets. For a spell there life was as good as it gets at home. I was listening to a lot of “Chicago Style” jazz at the time based on the old New Orleans jazz and blues.

Possibly, probably, but none that are in the Private Collection.

Marcus Roberts Trio “Time and Circumstance” Columbia cd Haven’t spun this one in a few years. Such an amazing pianist. I vividly remember seeing him perform at Antone’s in Austin. Piano master!

Pulled from a "stockpile" of recordings that Ellington produced and recorded over the years funded from his own pocket and not officially released before this series. Not unissued or rejected tracks, but full-fledged recordings made for various reasons--try out new arrangements, showcase new compositions, feature an artist, etc. Now Playing Disc 2

Duke Ellington “The Private Collection, Vol. 7: Studio Sessions, 1957 & 1962” Full orchestra and octet recordings, featuring some interesting arrangements re-thinking band staples. Lots of great Gonsalves!

Had to turn this up a bit louder than usual, a hard rain is a-fallin’. . . . Planet D Nonet “Blues to be There–A Salute to Duke Ellington” This is a good one!

Hill and Ross are great players and I bet that was a great show. I really like the 2 cd set that Ross and Jason Palmer did together with Mark Turner on board as well. . . a great release.

Marquis Hill “New Gospel Revisited” I like this one the more I spin it.

“The Complete Bach Cello Suites” Zuill Bailey, Octave Records SACD, disc 2 Nice interpretations, very realistic sounding cello playback.

I enjoyed The Shield, it was nowhere near The Wire or other top-notch shows, and its production values weren't awe-inspiring, but it was entertaining. I never felt the need to watch any of The Commish.

I myself think neither the two basses nor the electric piano sound terrible or detract from the whole.

They are not going to repress boxes that they sold out of long ago, in large part because of licensing limitations, and in part because they said they never would and they are persons of their word.

George Benson/McDuff, OJC cd 600×600 115 KB 2 LPs reissued on this cd: “The New Boss Guitar of George Benson” and “Hot Barbeque” Interesting that long-time Sun Ra bassist extraordinaire Ronnie Boykins is on the first album. Red Holloway is on tenor on both albums.
