  1. I just preordered this year's holy grail archival jazz release, "Trane & Wes in San Francisco, 1961." These are location recordings from Coltrane's engagement at the Jazz Workshop, where Wes Montgomery sat in with the band. It was presumed for years that there were no recordings of this collaboration, as none had turned up in the 60+ intervening years, so it was quite a surprise when the granddaughter of the fan who recorded one evening of the engagement on a Webcor miniature portable tape recorder discovered a carton in her recently deceased grandmother's attic in Walnut Creek with 3-inch reels in white boxes marked "Coltrane Sextet, Jazz Workshop." The woman, Charlotte Weintraub, brought the tapes to the offices of the S.F. Jazz organization, where they were listened to by members of the education program who were startled by the find once they heard the guitar in the mix. Other jazz scholars weighed in and declared the tapes authentic. I've heard that while not pristine, the recordings have quite serviceable audio, though lots of audience chatter and clinking glasses can be heard. The personnel is listed as Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Reggie Workman, and special guest Wes Montgomery. Among the tunes is a nearly 45-minute version of "Impressions," likely the longest performance of this composition until Coltrane's final group in 1966, as well as Montgomery's original composition "West Coast Blues." The release date for the two-CD set is listed as May 6. Please remember today's date.
  2. I've been buying since '91. Have all but a half dozen sets.
  3. Well, that's not my opinion, and I can and do have them. Your taste and mine are very different, and vive la difference. I'll just try to be more polite and end there.
  4. Like shingles, I think Mosaic doesn't care (if you think they are just for old white men). Like you and me. And if you think Capitol AND Dot Prima and Keely and NPR Word Jazz are sexier than what they are putting out. . .well I don't. Honestly, I don't think Mosaic is EVER going to change their format of black and white with photos they own or can be gifted the use of and the big box and booklet, nor their idea of "jazz focused" releases. It's the kind of help they have been saying no to for a long time. I think that they just want to keep going for a spell before they all retire.
  5. I asked Michael about a Babs Gonzales set. His reply was classic: "Lon, you are out of your mind!" Sexy is in the eye of the beholder, even sexy jazz. I really like Prima of the 'thirties, after that . . . no and not sexy. Word Jazz? No and not sexy. I think with what you think of as sexy jazz you are just not the target audience for Mosaic, and Mosaic is not for you. Pitch ideas to Bear Family!
  6. I agree those are definitely not Mosaic territory. And I know Bear Family has done the Louis and Keely and I believe the Word Jazz has been collected all under one roof in a box set as well.

  13. Normally I love the Mosaic black and white and Francis Wolff photo format, but Mosaic is just not the right label for a Saturn Record box with all those amazing color covers that would HAVE to be included.
