  1. "The Soul of Ben Webster" Verve/Analogue Productions SACD
  2. Too much rockin' steady had me reach for a mellower groove. Lou Donaldson "Pretty Things" from 1970 on Universal Japan cd from 2015. Dapper Lou Been too long since I heard the work of Ted Dunbar, a cool guitarist.

    Mingus in Mono

At this point only cdjapan's hairdresser knows for sure. I hope so. The Solid Records/Ultra Vybe reissues are great and I'd love to have this to complete the material in this series.
  4. Aretha Franklin "Lady Soul" Atlantic cd from the box set. An alternate cover (from an alternate universe?) that I had never encountered before:
  5. Another entry in the "Rainy Day Dream Away" sub-category is this bargain bin pickup. One that has paid off. This "Zam Rock" album is a genuine trip. I'm listening to--the "Reverbed" version of the album, which is the second disc in this set. I keep thinking of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and how could I not, but there's a twist to the grooves here and the album definitely create a strong mood. Whoa. Wow. A party disc.
  6. Laurence Hobgood "Union" Naim cd. A marriage of excellent playing with excellent sound. EDIT to add: listened through again. I kept thinking what an asset this trio of show-offs would be to any number of current singers. (It's no surprise that Hobgood has been at the helm of arguably the best albums of Kurt Elling). This is one of those albums where the engineering is telling the story as well. What I would place in the "stoner jazz" category, "Rainy Day Dream Away" sub-category.

    Mingus in Mono

I find with cdjapan I can get about 7 or 8 discs shipped DSL for about 30 dollars, which boils down to a decent enough price per disc, and I can get the discs in about 4 days from Japan. A reason I keep going back to cdjapan and not buying Japanese discs elsewhere. I'd like to get this new one when released as I find these new issues to sound better than the Mosaic.
  8. Duke Ellington "Featuring Paul Gonsalves" OJC cd Paul was just so much fun to listen to.
  9. Tommy Talbert "Bix, Duke, Fats" Seabrook cd of 1957 Atlantic Records release Mellow . .. "Birth of the Cool" influenced. https://www.jazzwax.com/2009/11/tom-talbert-bix-duke-fats.html
  10. I thought it was obvious it was from Masked and Anonymous! What a movie. I love the look of this customized bike.
  11. Weirdly fascinating cover image. David Bowie "Toy Box" disc 3.
  12. Thiago Amud "De Ponta A Ponta Tudo E Praia-Palma" Another 1.99 take a punt and a very well-recorded album. Brazilian, modern, more folk oriented than say Hermeto Pascoal but with a bit of that goofy gravitas going on. The contrabass violinist is featured to good effect. Enjoying the listen!
  13. Tatiana Parra "Inteira" Japan cd I had never heard though heard of Ms Parra and when I saw this cd for 1.99 it was a prime time to try her music out. Very Brazilian but sophisticated fusion of differing styles and quite jazzy at times. I'm glad I took a chance! She has a nice supple voice.
  14. Blue Moods "Myth & Wisdom" . . . a really nice sounding Mingus tribute album. I think I could have enjoyed another horn alongside the tenor sax, but in this quartet format the music and arrangements did make me think of a Monk influence on Mingus. If you are going to do an album of Mingus material pianist Kikoski is a great choice! Hirahara does a great job as well.
  15. (Tom Jobim) Nova Banda "Familia Jobim"
  16. Coleman Hawkins "Good Old Broadway" Moodsville/JVC XRCD Another excellent session recorded with Flanagan, Holley and Locke.
  17. Dexter Gordon "The Montmartre Collection" disc 2, Black Lion/Muzak Japan It's amazing how good these reissues of Black Lion material sound.
  18. Rahsaan Roland Kirk "Rahsaan Rahsaan" WEA Japan cd This 1970 recording has raps from Rahsaan that are still relevant today. And some fun and moving music throughout.
  19. I mostly know him through his work with Kirk and with Earland. He is not the biggest name but a very good player. I'm listening to him right now here:
  20. 9 degrees. And we're repeating a phrase often heard in the winter. . . "At least it's not snowing."
  21. Another volume of the excellent Adventure Records series "Piano Jazz Masters" -- Benjamin Tabakin. I love solo jazz piano and this has that Brazilian spice as well. Excellently recorded.
  22. Snuck this one in. . . probably will be the only one I get to listen to today now that my wife is up. I love the four in this series from Adventure Records–excellent pianists, exciting programs of material, great sound.
  23. Albare "A Long Way"
