Listening to Sonny Rollins "Tour de Force" Prestige, Japan cd. This session doesn't get a lot of talk, probably because of the two tracks with Earl Coleman, but Sonny plays so well here backed by Kenny Drew, George Morrow and Max Roach, and the sound is very good. Followed by another disc that sounds very good, Robert Glasper "Double Booked," sessions recorded live with the Trio and the "Experiment." His third for Blue Note, and one I like a lot.

I would think the problem in this case is that the Japanese SHM-CD has not yet been officially released and they may well not have stock at this time.

Louis Armstrong "V-Discs"

If you really want something from Japan DHL does a three or four day delivery, very impressive. During this pandemic period that has been the way I've gotten discs from Japan. It's more expensive than other choices, but most of those other choices just aren't shipping. . . DHL is quick and the job has gotten done.

First off the instrumental version of Flying Lotus "Flamagra" on cd. Talk about soundscapes! Then on to Kurt Elling "Man in the Air" Blue Note cd.

Houston Person "The Lion and his Pride" Muse cd. Followed by Ed Motta "Perpetual Gateways" Sony cd I just love Ed Motta. He should record a lot more!

Yes, the Honi Gordon was out as an Original Jazz Classics Limited Edition cd. It's very good. Beverly Kenney is a fine singer.

Canny ebay shoppers can find it too supposedly (I say supposedly because at least one vendor has verified he has stock, but so far due to shipping times I haven't seen a buyer yet receive one.)

I haven't had a chance yet to watch all this video . . . . But I've come to the conclusion that Jobim was a genius. . . the mellowest genius ever. His genius writing perhaps declined in his final decade. . . but he was still a master performer. I have almost all the recordings he's made, and I snap up choice albums covering his compositions. They are wonderful compositions for the most part.

Haven't played this one for a while and I like it. It always surprises me that there are SEVEN tunes on this release, I ususally assume a Blue Note release has six! Horace Silver, "Horacescope" 24 bit by RVG cd from Japan.

Started the day off with the Ezzthetics release of part of the Heliocentric Worlds material from Sun Ra. Sure improved sound. Though I think I do miss some of the mud of the ESP DISC 3 cd version in comparison. Gives a bit of body. Then on to a Japanese 24 bit by RVG lp facsimile Blue Note cd version of Grant Green's "Goin' West." Forgot how much fun this one is. Billy Higgins should get a medal for the drum patterns he comes up with here! And Herbie is really working. . . . Then it was on to Kurt Elling, "Close Your Eyes" Blue Note cd, from the box I got from Tire-Bitin' Man (I think he might have previously been a Street-Fighting Man). I love that tune, "Close Your Eyes," its melody and harmony are tailor-made for jazz. Another good release from Elling that I'm getting to know. Then it was on to something different, the 50th Anniversary reissue of Grateful Dead "Working Man's Dead." It sounds really good. It sounds a bit different from the Mobile Fidelity SACD version which is excellent, they are both good editions of this classic album. The lenticular cover for this is truly something else in a great way. And as a British comedy team used to say, now for something completely different. Flying Lotus "Flamagra"

Myriam Alter "Where is There" This is a beautiful disc. The playing is chamber jazz with a latin (Argentinian) feel, and the beautiful cello of Jacques Morelenbaum is wonderfully featured. It can be background or can rivet your attention to it's charm. And it's very nicely recorded in Germany.

I have recently gotten into Kurt Elling. I thought he was interesting before but somehow I just never clicked with him. In the meantime I really got into Betty Carter and digested her innovations and I think that when revisiting Elling this really helped me to see his own vision and his own decidedly heavy skill at both singing and interpreting. Listened to this one today, a recent arrival care of the only biter of tires we have on the forum. It has blown me away, I love the concept of love and loss that permeates the song selection and that is so effectively conveyed through the singing. The centerpice, "You Don't Know What Love Is," is a powerful performance. It made me think of the years of separation due to her mental Illness my late wife and I went through, and also the parting I was forced to make over seven years ago from "the one that got away." I'll just say I was snapped to attention listeneing, and very moved. An excellent recording as well. The horns are nice, but I think I would have liked this one trio only. Kurt Elling "Flirting with Twilight" Blue Note cd Then I thought of another male vocalist that I think has mad skills, Andy Bey, and I put on "Black Maybe" from the Gary Bartz LP I listened to yesterday. This is a very different type of performance, but a great one for me. I love Syreeta's version of this tune as well. Then on to another extremely talented singer, Rhianon Giddens. What an amazing human being, what a consummate musician. This one is full of atmosphere and recorded to deliver. Rhiannon Giddens, "There is No Other" (with Francesco Turrisi)
