Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!

Now the cdjapan date is September 4. Hmmm. -
Last one tonight, Jack Teagarden "Jazz Maverick" Warner Japan cd of Roulette session.
-
"The Dixie Sound of Jack Teagarden" Roulette stereo LP. I need to find the mono of this one of these days as the Roulette mono LPs I have are fantastic. (This stereo is really good). I had this still lying around since I last played it and just seeing it made me pick it up. Don Goldie is so good on trumpet here, and Jack both does the tailgate thing perfectly and also is a back-seat driver. . . always such a great sound and feel! And Don Ewell on piano. . . man that cat could play.

A receiver has a radio tuner, a preamp and an amp, all in one "box." An integrated amp has a preamp and and amp in one box. An amplifier alone is. .. an amplifier. If you don't use your tuner section that opens up a lot more options as nowadays there are more integrated amps than receivers. But if you like your receiver having it looked at and getting a repair appraisal makes sense. It may cost you 65 to 85 dollars or so for a "look see" but you know it needs SOMETHING and that usually is included in the resulting repair charge, not separate from it. I supsected the capacitor rather than contaminated pots on your controls as those in my experience cause noise issues in both channels. And they usually start to need replacement 20 to 30 years along the line. I guess the pots could be dirty in one channel only but that has not been my experience except in a mono amplifier.

There's a world of good and great amps out there but you do have to spend a bit, Great receivers are a bit more difficult--receivers are less in vogue than in the past and there are fewer quality ones newly made. To me knowing the age I think it's possible a capacitor is failing in that channel. If you can locate a good technician it might pay to have it gone through and refurbished especially if you are very happy with the receiver.

Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!
jazzbo replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
Interestingly cdjapan still shows the release date this Friday. I'm certain that could possibly change, but hopeful that perhaps it's a delay for the American market and not the Japanese. . . . -
"Blues #4" is 10:11. According to youtube "Autumn Leaves" timing is 9:33. I'm not sure I have any others with previously unreleased tracks.
-
"Somethin' Else" had an alternate of Autumn Leaves, and "Here 'Tis" has a "Blues #4."
-
Johnny Griffin "Hush-a-bye" Muzak (Japan) 2 cd set of Black Lion material recorded at Cafe Montmartre. Man these cds sound great!

I've hope that this is a US problem of some kind and the Japanese release goes through. -

So far the Japanese SHM-CD has not changed its delivery date. . . . -
Started off listening today with a cd, Stan Getz "Quartet, Live in 1960, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf and Zurich." This has great playing and quite good mono sound. Then I moved to LPs. First James P Johnson solo piano sides from this release, "The Complete Edmond Hall/James P. Johnson/Sidney De Paris/Vic Dickenson Blue Note Sessions" from Mosaic Records. Then "Spotlight on Eddie Condon and his Allstars" Then a Savoy LP of Eddie Bert's, "Kaleidoscope" Then back to cd for the lovely Myriam Alder "If"

Outside, it's not trying to be a UniPak. Beautiful release. -

I have the Japanese RVG of Caramba. . . a beautiful gatefold mini-LP. Sounds really good too. -
Spun some LPs today. First up one of my favorite Santana LPs, “Borboletta.” I really like how Santana had assimilated and collated things he learned from playing with McLaughlin (the way I hear it using power tube distortion and feedback sustain in a new way } and I confess the Chinmoy inspired lyrics appealed to me when this was first out on LP and still does. Then “Friday Night at the Blackhawk” Miles Davis. .. this is from a 2 LP Columbia Special Products release. I have this material in many forms and like playing this 2 LP set. Then on to Bob Dylan “Shadows in the Night” on LP. This is actually my least favorite of the Dylan “Standards” albums, I don’t think he quite had his vocal approach down pat yet, but I really do like the arrangements and playing. Then on to a cd, the new Blue Note, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers “Just Coolin’” . . . not the best thing the label ever held back, but nice to have. Sure sounds good on cd. People are complaining about the packaging but I like it. One more to call it a day, "GURIS: Celebrating the Music of Hermeto Pascoal" Jovino Santos Neto & André Mehmari, with Hermeto Pascoal. Really a good one.

I dig the thinness. . .I have very crowded shelves. And if they had done a jewel case they probably would have charged two to four dollars more! There's a shift towards paper packaging as an environmental move. . . probably a bit less ecologically damaging. And cheaper to produce. -

Jeez for me this packaging is such a non-issue. I know how to handle cds. At least they didn.t charge us 15 or 16. -
Hermeto Pascoal & Big Band "Natureza Universal" This album gets more interesting the more I hear it. Wild, eccentric melodies and ideas, ecstatic samba energy, but played with concise precision and passion. Amazing music.

Listening to "Rough and Rowdy Ways" lately had me wanting to revisit "standards" Dylan so I spun disc 3 of this set. I really like these albums. Bob Dylan "Triplicate" Then because it was still near the turntable I put on Duke Ellington's "My People" again (mono, Contact LP version). This "show" is so timely now and so moving to me, Ellington just amazes me. The LP just has such an impact as well with the voices and the percussion so vivid--the tap dancing dances around my room. Joya Sherrill sounds so good on this lp. Then. . . I had to have more Duke. Duke Ellington "In a Mellotone" RCA LP
