Santana “Borboletta” Columbia LP A great album and the OG LP sounds great. A gorgeous cover to see and hold in your hands as well.

This was mislaid for a while and I found it under my listening chair! A funky remake of a classic Chico Barque album with amazing trombone! By the daughter of Joyce and Nelson Angelo, quite a family background. Clara Moreno Samba Esquema Novo “De Novo” 300×300 15.5 KB

Brother Jack McDuff “Moon Rappin’” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD A fun album.

Bob Dylan “The Bootleg Series Vol. 17: Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996–1997)” This is a fascinating box set. I’m listening to the remix of “Time Out of Mind” in this set at the moment. This opinion runs contrary to most that I read but I prefer the original mix. . . though I can like this one as an alternate window into the music. The original has a magic that drew me in and revived interest in Dylan’s music for me though, it will always live in my heart as a masterwork.

Orrin Evans “The Magic of Now” Smoke Sessions cd. Orrin with Immanuel Wilkins. A great listen.

500×500 21.4 KB Ike Quebec “Easy Living” Blue Note Japan cd Ike was very important to the Blue Note label. Had he lived longer we would have had more interesting work from him as a leader, sideman and A&R man. . . but then we would have not had the same Duke Pearson albums we did or the same albums he arranged and co-produced. He had such a great sound. Here he has great players with him. Ike Quebec - tenor saxophone Bennie Green - trombone (tracks 1–5) Stanley Turrentine - tenor saxophone (tracks 1–5) Sonny Clark - piano Milt Hinton - bass Art Blakey - drums

Dexter is often addictive to me. . . can’t listen to just one. . . He had such a distinct musical personality. The Complete Prestige Recordings of Dexter Gordon

Mark Turner “In this World” Warner Bros cd I’m re-visiting a fantastic disc I pulled from the less-traveled shelves and don’t want to put back. It is imo a superbly engineered disc (recorded and mixed by James Farber) and just a phenomenally performed group of recordings. Mark Turner is exhibiting and being captured at his inventive and technical best–he shows off a bit his speed and mastery of articulation while also presenting his constant lyricism. Each instrument is taking part in telling stories here, and they are mixed with a balance that is cohesive and seems to draw you into the room with the men. I love listening to this one.

Decided to play another old favorite, and decided on this version, Sony SRCS 9121~2, the 20 Bit LP facsimile version. “Miles Davis at Fillmore” When I first got this and for a spell afterwards I was fascinated by the photos of Marguerite Eskeridge. Miles with Marguerite

Yes, it's a great album. I don't have vinyl, but have the "RVG Special Edition" lp facsimile cd from Japan as well as another Japanese cd version. Right now Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young “Four Way Street” Atlantic 2 cd set, both discs

Yes. Michael revealed to me some info that was previously unknown, and Peter Cook quoted a few of these bits in his book on Blue Note and actually credited my interview (in the footnotes). I had found just the right questions to ask to get him really flowing with info. He was a pleasure to talk to. When I typed up the interview from the recording for his review, at his request, he replied "That is EXACTLY what we said. Proceed." I did this for a little e-magazine called "Doobop." I saved a copy but somehow after that disappeared a few years later AAJ gobbled it up. Not sure how that was accomplished . . . they sure didn't consult me. It was quite an interesting interview, and I only wish that I could have chronicled the the forty minutes or so we conversed after the interview closed.

Charles Big Band "With Love" Mosaic Records/Blue Note cd I like this one a bit more each time I spin it.
-
Interesting! For me it was Blanton Webster era material on Smithsonian LPs.

Another one I haven’t spun in some time. Ah, Ellington. I used to not pay enough attention to late Ellington. I’ve learned the error of my ways. Duke Ellington “New Orleans Suite” Atlantic cd

Mingus in April makes sense, he was born in April and played a few tunes with April in the title. He talks about April in his autobiography if I remember correctlu. I am hardly ever out in the evening/night, I get up so early for several reasons that I retire earlier than many. Besides, I live out in the hills in the country at the edge of a forest and to travel to where there is night life is a good part of an hour. . . not worth it for me, and my wife is not into it either. So it's daytime weather that impacts me. We're having a heavy snowfall winter for the tirst time in several which I am enjoying because it gives ll these trees a lovely costume--otherwise there are acres and acres of bare trees and that gets to me. Also I think I'm used to talking/writing about the weather a bit because a) we do get four distinct seasons and varying weather within them, that does cause the weather to rise to your consciousness and b) when I first returned from Africa I felt completely out of place and needed some sort of small talk openings to get to know and understand conversations with peers and adults. . . talking about the weather was always a good opener. I notice that I am falling back on that of late, not sure why. Right now A 28 degree morning! For some reason ye olde dachshund let me slumber an extra two hours or so. Wow. I feel groggy! Starting off with Wynton Marsalis Quartet “Live at Blues Alley” Columbia 2 cd set, disc 1 600×600 85.5 KB It’s been a long time since I spun this one. Marcus Roberts really impresses, as always.
