Yes, I really enjoyed McDonald's books, may need to re-read some soon. I'm doing the same thing this year with Philip K. Dick, re-reading his science fiction and non-science fiction novels. I love these books! They have shaped my brain.

I think that's an inaccurate statement, I love Aretha myself, but "generally acknowledged"? Just sloppy writing and limited thinking.
-
I agree, these are among the best Blue Notes, something else!
-
So long Cat in the Hat! I'll keep playing the music you left us. I like all the Impulse, the ESP, the Flying Dutchman and the Cherrys. And more. Such a distinctive sound.

I ended up getting the rest of these. They sound so good! I have the Mosaics but enjoy having those in the Mosaic sets in LP form. And those not in the Mosaics have never sounded better on cd. If you're at all interested in Roulette Basie (and imo it's one of his best periods) and don't have the Mosaics and don't want to pay the heavy prices for them, grab these before they're gone.

It was very easy to get the answers via amazon. The Poindexter has 11 tracks, which includes the Lanyop alternate, the same as the previous CD. The Coles has the two bonus tracks that were on the Koch. The Rouse has the three songs from the album with Seldon Powell material.

I really like this. The sound is better than I expected, and some very nice playing. Groovy!

Ah, I see what thread I'm in now, I thought it was "Listening to" before. It would be nice. I have both the cds and the LPs but would buy a new release in a heartbeat. We'll see. -

Okay Alan, with your getting those cds and my recently getting the 6 LP set in unplayed condition from Japan recently. . . I'm sure now Columbia/Sony will soon release a new set! -
This starts here soon.

The three Dave Bailey Epic albums were reissued in Japan in October last year and are still available via cdJapan--I'm very happy to have them, they sound great. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/products?term.media_format=&q=Dave+Bailey

I like it a lot; I bought the Japanese reissue from October last year and it sounds excellent.
-
Not sure that there's no new mastering. The Levy was only on cd before from Fresh Sounds (unofficial, my estimation) and this new one has a bonus track not on cd before.

That's a great box set that Basie. All the previously released material (not the extra stuff only in the Mosaic) has come out on EXCELLENT imo sounding discs from Japan this last year. . . as well as the studio band and vocalist stuff. (And two records were not in the Basie boxes or on cd before). I shouldn't have but I bought these on the recommendation of 262Rob and glad I did. I've sold material on LP and SACD that I wish I had now that I am back to playing LPs and often preferring these to cds, and that I now have better SACD playback than ever. Oh well. Time to buy some things again. . . not the first time that's happened!

Manhattan, Season 2, continuing on, Blu-ray. Man, this is the only show that really rivals Better Call Saul for me this year.

A great series, Shetland. My wife loves it, though she often has a hard time deciphering what people are mumbling! Somehow I can manage.

I can't get to see Daredevil until/if the seasons come out on disc. Darn. I really like this season of Better Call Saul so far, great stuff for me, I like the slow, deliberate story unfolding. I thought this week's Elementary was pretty darned good and slightly funny (the hero dying in mortal combat with his nemesis falling down a waterfall mirroring Doyle's unsuccessful kill off of Sherlock, "I was bitten by a radioactive detective").
-
There is also an earlier Jazz Archives CD of Jammin' the Blues. And a Masters of Jazz volume of Lester's contains it.

I don't necessarily agree. I have a few on mono LPs and prefer them to the stereo. So I don't personally feel this is a "bullshit release."
-
Coming this year, supposedly on LP and CD, in a box set: http://www.recordshopx.com/artist/coltrane_john/the_atlantic_years_in_mono/ Not much more solid info than that, yet. I'm interested.

The excellent "Better Call Saul" and the excellent Season 2 of "Manhattan" (on Blu-ray).
