  1. Back to this 2LP. I love the cd box set, but these LPs sound wonderful.
  2. What I wish for (and know it probably won't happen) would be a box set gathering newly remastered sides Louis recorded with singers as a sideman during that time. I have this material mainly on King Jazz, but they could use a sonic upgrade, and the work could be better known these days.
  3. I think the environmental and organizational structure of athletic programs offers opportunities for homo-erotic activity both welcome and unwanted, and this is all the more reason for vigilance, diligent reporting and accountability of any impropriety of any degree.
  4. Yeah, I'd say the best sounding available is the Oslo, which was also on film, and the Paris.
  5. 4 wasn't quite as good as the others but I'm glad I finally got to see it!
  6. I've heard a lot of Beck, and I don't dispute he's a master guitarist. . . he's just not ever really made me a fan. That's fine, he has plenty. That he and Jagger are still relevant is a good thing.
  7. I get the great control of the string and the ultra-cool vibrato thing and all but it's just not that musical to me. I'll say no more, Jeff Beck fans have every right to love him to death! What got me on another board was heaps and heaps of praise for Mick's performances in the skits. I thought he did good but gushing about it I can't do.
  8. That's a good one. Right now
  9. Watched it live when it aired, and agree with Jim. I'm not as gaga as many I've read about his work on this show, but the appearance with the Foo Fighters was great. Jeff Beck just continues to not really impress me. I have a guitarist friend who would probably have his baby he loves him so and I just don't see it the same way.
  10. No kidding. His influence on Ellington and Ellingtonians is not even the earliest of his importances, and is just one aspect of Bechet's place in the history not really talked much about. I have the first eleven volumes of the Bechet Master of Jazz series (thanks to a board member here, so wonderful to have all this stuff in place) and they could serve as an overview to the development of jazz. Not that Hawkins isn't important. . . but . . . .
  11. I've revisited the pizza place and took pictures of the Blakey tabletop. In the center of this photo is the CD I'm curious about (photo of Blakey with cigarette dangling from his mouth): This photo has the back cover. While it's a little blurry, the Blue Note logo can clearly be seen: Anyone recognize this release?? Looks more like homemade artwork than a legitimate release to me.
  12. Pyramid hater! Just FYI: modern Egyptologists believe that the pyramids were not built with slave labor, but by free citizens employed in state sponsored building.
  13. Well, it's four discs. There's precious little info on the web, come on Concord, don't you want to let us know what it is so we can decide to buy it?
  14. Out on July 31 is the complete Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders Fantasy Recordings. . . . http://www.amazon.com/Keystone-Companions-Complete-Fantasy-Recordings/dp/B0089X38C2/ref=sr_1_4?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1341836030&sr=1-4&keywords=garcia%20saunders&tag=vglnkc4192-20
  15. Well, sadly these results are not surprising to me. Hopefully there will be repercussions which will in the future deter any college administration from improperly dealing with these sort of actions.
  16. An amazing value. Actually not that much "detail" in the comments.
  17. My set arrived on Monday. Have listened to about five discs. If anyone is interested, it appears that this set uses 11 XRCD24 masterings that appeared in Japan. I listened to one and it sounds pretty amazing. Here is a list: http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/search/index.asp?keyword=toscanini+xrcd&site=&target=SEARCH&type=sr Pictures at an Exhibition is one of them.
  18. Damn, another for my list.
  19. This was released maybe ten years ago as a Japanese lp facsimile of the Phillips session. It's an interesting session, but far from essential for Jazz Messengers fans.
  20. Yesterday was the 1938 lps. Today, the 1939
