  1. An amazing value. Actually not that much "detail" in the comments.
  2. My set arrived on Monday. Have listened to about five discs. If anyone is interested, it appears that this set uses 11 XRCD24 masterings that appeared in Japan. I listened to one and it sounds pretty amazing. Here is a list: http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/search/index.asp?keyword=toscanini+xrcd&site=&target=SEARCH&type=sr Pictures at an Exhibition is one of them.
  3. Damn, another for my list.
  4. This was released maybe ten years ago as a Japanese lp facsimile of the Phillips session. It's an interesting session, but far from essential for Jazz Messengers fans.
  5. Yesterday was the 1938 lps. Today, the 1939
  6. I hardly ever use my iPod and mine is an older one, and it doesn't output digital files to this Denon or a Wadia iTransport I've used, it's either incapable of doing so or defective. I tried it, no go. So I can't really answer that question. It has a "Restorer" circuit to use with the USB input, so I figure that it will have whatever resolution the file type has (this input supports 24/96) and a bit of audio fleshing out. Probably sounds great, definitely accesses the 32 bit DAC. I've used the coaxial and optical inputs and get great sound. But can't comment on the iPod sound.
  7. Me too. I've picked up a few SHMCDs used, cheap for them actually, but not any of the SHMSACDs.
  8. Yes, and in the last few years there were literally hundreds of SHMSACDs released in Japan, and I hear more are planned. So there's still life in the SACD world.
  9. I believe there was some discussion about them years ago. According to online samples, they have some interesting sonic attributes.
  10. Duke Ellington "An Explosion of Genius" 1938-1940, 6 lps, swinging this morning to some great sound!
  11. Happy birthday and many happy returns!
  12. Congratulations. I predict you'll like both.
  13. Again, because it sounds so good, especially the second disc.
  14. I don't have enough information about the personal life of the Coltranes and the inner workings of the Coltrane group to say "that's impossible." It does seem more likely the quartet fell through for other reasons.
  15. I don't know Pete, a case could be made that Mingus was right! It's all personal opinion, and if Mingus felt these were the best he made, well for him they were. They're damned fine records! I'd throw East Coasting in there as one of his best commercial recordings.
  16. Yes, due out (only via Pop Market at least for a while) August 28. Nothing that hasn't been on cd before. http://www.popmarket.com/charles-mingus-the-complete-columbia-rca-albums-collection/details/26894981
  17. It did come out of the blue in comparison to other Mosaic sets which have been announced earlier on in the process. Earlier in the year Sue Mingus had been querying fans about how to release some new material, whether as downloads, a small or a large box set. Most respondents wanted the most material as possible, on disc, and several of us suggested a Mosaic set. Now months later. . . here's a Mosaic set. I would be very surprised if there were not a connection! What I think happened: Michael Cuscuna got together with Sue and began preparing a box set, for Mosaic or through another channel, and it turns out Mosaic won the opportunity.
  18. Well, to be a bit contrary, audiophile lables have put out a lot of Blue Note and Impulse! SACDs the last few years, there are some more Verve titles coming out, and they are still putting out great classical SACDs (EMI just put out about a dozen multi-SACD sets of classic material in excellent sound, and cheap ---two SACD sets for about 15 dollars, three and four cd sets for 17 to 22 dollars or so). I really don't think the format is totally dead. For rock and pop, maybe. But classical and some jazz. .. still seems to be releases available and forthcoming. Not going like gangbusters, but not dead. Also, If one hasn't yet moved to Blu-ray, the latest crop of Sony Blu-ray players also handle SACD. A great way to get both if you have a combined audio/visual system.

    Cd Players

If you're considering an SACD player, I'd recommend looking into the availability of the 2010 "100th Anniversary" SACD player from Denon, the DCD-A100. I got one for the discounted price of 1400 dollars (2500 list). This is an amazing machine with great DACs that you can use with other components via a coax and optical digital input.
  20. Which makes the Mosaic statement "only one was released on an authorized cd" not exactly right. . . . And that also infers that the Monterey cd from Japan was not legitimate. I don't care. I'm glad the set is coming out!
  21. I've been told that the Ulysse lps and cds were legit, not sure if that's true, they were hard to find anyway. I have the cds thanks to a member here. Much thanks to a member here. There was a more recent bootleg two cd set.
  22. Me too. Excellent! Well, glad the results of the "poll" Sue had came out this way.. .
