  1. That's right, no one is obliged to accept anything. You're sounding like Chauncey Clemhouse again! One doesn't have to pay attention to Bond movies. If one is into the series one has to realize yes, they turned the page. Okay, I watched this movie. I liked it quite a bit. It was too "Bourne" for me, it was slipping into THAT mold rather than creating a new mould for the seires if you ask me. I liked Olga more than Eva, the whole Vesper thing in Casino wasn't that compelling for me. . . and subsequently his bit of obession about it was not as convincing to me. That's just me. By the way, there IS a ridiculously named woman in this one, Ms. Strawberry Fields, right? Anyway, yes this new reboot IS personally more to MY liking than any previous incarnation (I'm pretty "eh"/blah about all the other movies) and is promising. I hope Craig goes on and on in teh role.
  2. That IS a great session. (Those Hodes sessions are almost all brilliant!)
  3. I haven't seen the film yet (due to see it today), so I skipped the bulk of your review Alex, but riddle me this: have you read the books? I guess what I liked most about Casino Royale, this film's predecessor, was that we were finally given a Bond closer to how he comes off the pages (for me, in my imagination) from the Fleming stories/novels. I hope that is deepend/continued here in QOS. I read most all of the Fleming novels before I saw a single of the film (odd situation, I was living in Africa at the time) and I never felt the same about any of the previous movies in the slightest as I did about the books.
  4. They released also his BN recordings: Thanks Lon. I already have the BN "Jazz classics" vols 1 & 2 on LP. Have I already got the best part of the BN material or is there much more sensational music to explore in the set? MG MG, I'm not too familiar with the exact contents of those two lps. . . but yes, there's about five lps wotrth of Bech on Blue Note, so more goodies to experience. . . .(Not all of the datese he was on he LED, but he's of coures great on those).
  5. Yeah. Great stuff. I have all this material. . .I'd say the RCA, Blue Note, Fat Man, and King Jazz material are what I play the most.
  6. Yes, it was interesting to see these story elements recast. Chandler often had "blocks" --- apparently like many authors he had severe issues validating what he wrote and plot elements were very hard for him to come up with. Somehow rewriting these scenes and incorporating them helped him move forward. As someone who has nothing BUT problems writing I can really relate!
  7. MG, This Definitive release mimics the US RCA three cd set of the Bechet masters. . . .
  8. No need to be embarassed. . . I guess many of us have not read that. I haven't. . . probably should read it one day. Hopefully it has picked up after the first slow pages. . . . (I recently put a book down 2/3 read because I just couldn't hang with the writing so I know what you mean!) Does the book seem "accurate?"
  9. That's possibly my favorite too. . . though it vies with "The Big Sleep" which has some great scenes (cannibalized from earlier short stories).
  10. Like that one, too! Recently read PKD's Flow My Tears. Seemed like Chandler transposed into the future! PKD talked about Chandler being an influence and you can see it in several novels, including "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". . . . Chandler was SOMETHING ELSE. Incredible spinner of words.
  11. Many many happy returns!
  12. I watch plenty of tv but haven't seen these. . . . I think these sort of coins are like jazz reissues. . . they're made for a handful who are excited about them, and most everyone else just looks at them and shrugs. If there were ads for jazz reissues on tv, those not interested would react about the way we might to these coin ads!
  13. That's the first of a great collection! Right now, "Farewell My Lovely", Raymond Chandler. . . rereading it for about the fifth time I estimate.
  14. Thank, yes, very good set!
  15. They are getting hard to find in the US. There was an early cd four disc (or was it three? can't check right now) set on RCA of all the masters, and then RCA US also put out the series in the "Black and White" cd series that included the alternates. This material also showed up in the excellent French "Masters of Jazz" series of complete Bechet. There's probably a Proper set that includes some of this. . . I have an aversion to Proper and haven't paid attention.
  16. Well, I HAD to do well with Latin, new kid on the block, only American in the whole school, needed to impress the Headmaster (and I WANTED TO, Sir Michael Stern was a great personality and man). How useful do you think that Latin knowledge has been to me since? You guessed it, practically worthless! He had a great sense of humor. In England, before coming to Africa, he had been Andrew Lloyd Weber's Latin teacher as well. Apparently Weber sucked at Latin. Stern says he told Weber "I'm afraid if you don't shape up you may never amount to much of anything!"
  17. PS: Same happened with the Basin Street performance on Capitol. . .and Collector's Choice released a wonderful cd of performance tapes.
  18. I've had this cd for years. . .and yes, the sound is wonderful. I am not as familiar with the lp with added applause so it's not a problem for me. . . .

    Mitch Mitchell

Sad day. I don't agree that he was as "integral" as Hendrix himself. . . . But he was an influence to me as a drummer and I think his was an immense talent.
  20. Yes, all the RCAs are great. And the Blue Notes. Almost all Bechet is uniformly high level. Get whatever Blue Notes are in print. . . and the Mosaic Select is a good batch of sides as well.
  21. Yes, it's so much to ABSORB. When it first came out I was snobbish in that "it ain't THE MAN" and there were guys on there like WM that I admit at the time I didn't appreciate. The "digital sound" took me a while to get into as well. But over the years I've learned to really like it as I've been able to get familiar with the material and the performance. I think the performance IS good. And the material is very cool. . .just so much of it and so dense that at one sitting a lot washes over you undigested.
  22. JETman has the set and likes it. He had trouble with scratched dvds though. . . .
  23. The more i hear/listen to Epitaph, the more I like Epitaph.
  24. Now come on, "Albertus Magnum" would be "Big Al." "Albertus Maximus" would be "All that Al Could Be" in a way, or "Biggest Al." I didn't suffer through Latin for years in vain! When I first came to Waterford/Kamhlaba School in M'Babane, Swaziland in 1968 I was two years behind the rest of the class in Latin and as my Latin teacher was the Headmaster. . . I HAD to catch up. . . and I did, in an intense "quarter" where I nearly dreamed in Latin!
  25. Probably has something to do with "cost." I'm glad to see them doing this two cd version though. . . I continue to think the 100 dollar set is silly.
