Bechet (like Parker) is someone I would not want to steer clear of as alternates go. . . . Here is the tracklisting etc. Allan: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/discography.a...;copies=3%20CDs Great set. -

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

I'm probably going to cave and get the Goodman despite the alternate tracks... The Goodwin is good. I guess that's part of my problem, I don't find O'Day's voice to be sexy. Just saw Beyonce doing Etta James in the theater. . . now that was sexy! And made me cry. -
Reread his "Judgment of Eve" lately which was fun; I need to dig out Davy et al. Still savoring the delicious mood of Chandler. (The Long Goodbye, currently).

Yes you could, and you could find that better DAC housed in an amplifier or receiver too if you were in the market for a new one of those. Quite interesting audio times to live in! The new Wadia iTransport is an intriguing product too that makes an iPod a much more high fidelity device than ever before because they worked with Apple to get a digital, not audio, signal out of the device to send to a better DAC than the tiny internal one. The first and only such device so far.

I really WANT to like the O'Day that much, but just doesn't get there for me. I'm enjoying the new Goodman Mosaic of the Columbia material. The sound is excellent on this set! Lots of nice Cootie Williams. -
I'll bite. . . . Charlie Parker Herbie Nichols Art Hodes I'd probably have been tempted to include either T-Bone Walker or Charles Mingus (Columbia) if I had Mosaic versions of those; I listen to this material a lot.

Note that you won't get SACD out digitally with that Sony as a transport. There are also interesting new alternatives now such as the Peachtree Audio "Decco" and "Nova". . . integrated DAC/amplifiers with a tubed preamp system, nice DAC sections and digital chip amp section. Many "mainstream" receivers now have DACs incorporated as well.

Well, it's been out. Anyone use one?

World's oldest marijuana stash totally busted Two pounds of still-green weed found in a 2,700-year-old Gobi Desert grave By Jennifer Viegas updated 12:19 p.m. CT, Wed., Dec. 3, 2008 Nearly two pounds of still-green plant material found in a 2,700-year-old grave in the Gobi Desert has just been identified as the world's oldest marijuana stash, according to a paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany. A barrage of tests proves the marijuana possessed potent psychoactive properties and casts doubt on the theory that the ancients only grew the plant for hemp in order to make clothing, rope and other objects. They apparently were getting high too. Here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28034925/?gt1=43001

I'm with y'all too, though I'll get this Select eventually. I like the albums, and it would be nice to hear the remainder of the Carnegie Hall "Spirituals to Swing" performance from 1967. -
Little Known Gems from the Repertoire of Nat King Cole
jazzbo replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
One of my favorites sung by Nat anytime. . . "Blame it on my Youth". . . .And also "You're Looking at Me." Both songs I only really know from him, and well sung by him. -
I had a dream a few weeks ago in which a sixties Ellington record was playing and McPherson was soloing Sounded good! He has a beautiful sound and wonderful musical mind. I totally understand why Mingus gnabbed him, and like what Mingus got ouit of (and put into) him.

I haven't heard this ESP set, but I have heard their 2007 historical releases, the extensive Billie Holiday set, and the Lester Young cd. The sound on these is excellent. Better than on previous issues of the material I have had. By a solid margin.

Blu-Ray players play dvds beautifully. My ES Series Sony machine makes them look better than ever, and plays every disc my dvd players do/did.

I had a book on Norse mythology (still have it) I read and reread many times called "Children of Odin." I read the Howard Pyle books. I read some science fiction, I was intrigued by the Ace Doubles. I read all of Burroughs I think, form all the Tarzans to all the Mars and Venus and Pellucidar and even The Mucker. I then started on Philip K. Dick (my first was The Zap Gun bought when I was 12 in Addis Ababa) and Robert E. Howard, C. L. Moore, and other "Weird Stories" writers. . . . I also read a lot of comic books. I was 7 in 1962 and started reading all the Marvel superheroes that were in their infancy then. And my grandmother's attic had a complete collection of Classics Illustrated, and Mad magazine's first ten years. Later as an adolescent I branched out into medieval and ancient history, and Hammett, Chandler, Cain, McCoy, Ginnes, etc. My dad taught me to read when I was in kindergarten, and I've been reading and reading every since.
