  1. Hey, I hope you're not suggesting that he just changes his opinions whenever it suits him too, because that would be a disgrace. :g
  2. Hmmmm, I saw that one in the local Tower the other day, but I tend not to like those JATP type deals. Hmmmm indeed.
  3. Just in case there was still any doubt, :g It wasn't just 2010: Sir Alex Ferguson slams quality of the World Cup
  4. Thanks for posting this, sounds like I should get my hands on the recording with Dan Tepfer.
  5. You the man!!!, that was excellent, really enjoyed it, thanks.
  6. I have this one below, it might be a bit hard to find now but it's worth seeking out. :tup
  7. Liverpool have signed Joe Cole, I don't know what to think about it really, very suprised.
  8. Hmm.. not so sure about that, the quote is; "Ferguson thinks it was a "disappointing" World Cup and that France's performances were "terrible",". I think it's fairly obvious that he is talking about the WC in general and I don't think he would need to elaborate on why he found it that way, it was just disappointing, the way things sometime are. He also mentions by name a lot of the big players that didn't perform, not really living up to the expectations, so again he's talking about the whole thing not living up to the hype. I believe that he was talking in general/overall terms about the whole competition. I very much doubt he would bad mouth England, in public anyway, as there are a few of his players in the team, not to mention that Rio is now both the United and England captain.
  9. You say this ... but then you again talk about what didn't happen: I'm a cynic about the WC, the Olympics, the political and geographical absurdities of international cricket and much more. Sufficiently cynical in fact - yet still a fan - to not indulge in wishful thinking. Sport - along with food, music and my son - is my main forms of delight and joy in the world, so I'll be damned if I'll let a general all-round lack of perfection and sainthoods spoil it. But then, disgruntlement could also constitute a form of enjoyment. Of course I'm going to talk about what didn't happen in the WC, that's one of the reasons I, like my old friend Sir Alex, found it disappointing, very little did happen. Even if you go into it with low expectations of what you're going to see it doesn't mean you don't hope that you're proved wrong. It's still the WC. I think if you're a sports fan and you don't indulge in wishful thinking you're not really a sports fan, I would think having unrealistic fantasies about what your team can achieve is possibly the very essence of being a fan. I should know, I'm a Liverpool fan and still think they're going to win the league in my lifetime. I think that being New Zealand's chief cheerleader may have clouded your opinion/judgement of this particular WC. But it could have been a lot worse I suppose, you might have been Slovakia's chief cheerleader, it was their first WC as well, but they actually won a game. Oh, and just as an FYI, I am completely gruntled, always have been, always will be.
  10. I couldn't disagree more and the fact that you say you weren't expecting anything is revealing. Even though the players are a little tired, it's great theater and for me, as a Spain fan, the WC didn't disappoint in the least. From that perspective, it was one of the best ever If I had to think back to some of the other WCs I've seen they didn't disappoint either: Brasil winning their third cup in 1970; Maradona's "hand of god" in 1986; France in 1998; and Brasil again in 2002. This WC had some great moments also: the Kiwis holding off Italy, Landon Donovan getting the goal that sent the US into the Round of 16, the Netherlands ousting Brasil and Iniesta scoring the goal that won it for Spain. Probably no unknown players but Forlan's performance was wonderful to watch. I don't think the fact that I wasn't expecting anything is revealing at all, I live in Ireland so I expect that the weather will be fairly bad but that doesn't mean I don't hope that it will be good and when it is good it doesn't mean I'm not thrilled about it. :D Of course if the team you are adopting wins it's a good WC and I myself was glad Spain won it in the end. I don't think I said or even implied that this was the worst WC ever, however there are certin aspects to this particular one that draged it down, the "special" WC ball made it very difficult for some of the world's best players to perform the most rudimentary tasks, passing, free kicks, corners etc were usually overhit, the pitches seemed to cut up pretty badly after 2 games had been played on them, the officiating was so consistantly bad that it may have forced FIFA to seriously look at introducing technology into the game and the formation de jour of the whole tournament seems to have been a 4 2 3 1, which is a very cautious and denfensive formation unless, like Spain, you have some very skillful players. Even Sir Alex Ferguson described it as "disappointing", and he knows a bit about football. :w
  11. I don't know about that, his last season at Arsenal was the begining of the end really, he had a lot of injuries, IIRC he really only had one very good season at Barca, the rest was very hot and cold. I think if he really had any gas left in the tank he wouldn't be heading for the MLS, with all due respect to that league and it's players, it's more of a one last big payday than anything else.
  12. Overachieved? Oh, absolutely - that's the point. They were widely expected to be cannon fodder and worse for all three teams they met. That turned out not to be the case. They were competitive. Didn't win a game. BFD. If you don't want to share in the goodwill that has been extended to them by all and sundry, that's fine, too. But there's plenty of people who consider them a thumbs-up story from a tournament sorely lacking in them. Kiwi Kenny I don't think it has anything to do with not having any goodwill for them, the only team I had no goodwill for was France, for obvious reasons. The problem I have with the World Cup in general is not so much the competition itself, its the people who watch it thinking it's the best the game can offer. It's not, in fact, it is probably at least as much, if not more about promoting the game in areas where football is not the number one sport, N.Z., Japan and the USA would be good examples. So with that in mind the whole N.Z. thing was sucessful as there will probably be a few more kids there playing football in the next few years. However as the true All Whites fan that you are, you would of course be aware of the teams N.Z. had to beat to get to the W.C. Finals in the first place, countries with even less professional players than they have. From a purely footballing point of view, there are 3 maybe 4 teams I would have rather seen in the W.C. than the Kiwis, Russia, Croatia, Ireland of course, that could have possibly provided far more entertaining games and still had the potential for the whole "I didn't see that result coming/upset factor". The problem with FIFA and the WC in general is they want to make sure that everybody gets a go, so that even the fat kid gets to score a goal. N.Z. were the fat kid. For me a real thumbs up story would have been an African team getting maybe as far the semis, further than they did get anyway, with an African coach, not an overpaid white coach their Federations brought in just after they qualified. Hell, I certainly don't think the WC is the best the game has to offer. In reflecting on the WC, I'd rather base it on what happened ... rather than what maybe should've happened. And hey, the fat kid behaved with poise and decorum that some of the hot shots couldn't even get close to. I think you're missing my point, I am baseing my opinion on what happened. I didn't expect anything from this WC, I was in no way looking forward to it and not just because Ireland weren't there, (however judging by how bad the whole thing was thay might have done ok, better than France anyway) but because the WC usually disappoints, at least most of the ones I can remember from my lifetime. There is way to much club football played in an average season to expect players to be able to step up again and perform for another 3 weeks. But usually there are a couple of classic games, or a player you've never really heard of before stealing the show and then has every big club in the world wanting to sign him. Did that happen this time?, maybe some of the German games, though you can't really count the ones against the Aussies or England as they didn't really put up much of a fight, Honda for Japan stood out but he's already playing at CL level with CSKA Moscow so he doesn't really count, alot of the Geman players are also playing at a decent level. So if NZ getting 3 draws and not disgracing themselves is a highlight, for anyone other than a Kiwi that is, it kinda just proves what a shit WC it really was. Although that octopus rocked. Does he do Lotto number by any chance.
  13. There is a piece by Harvey Pekar in the book "A Miles Davis Reader", written in '75 or '76 for CODA magazine, talking about his albums from "Miles in Berlin" up to "Bitches Brew", with an emphasis on the second Great Quintet releases. There is nothing special about the piece itself, but I thought it was quite cool that someone was writing about that quintet in such glowing terms at a time when the music and style they played couldn't have been more unhip. He really makes a point of saying, "hey this stuff wasn't very popular at the time but do yourself a favout and check it out now, it's great".

  15. The Storyville CD is currently OOP, unfortunately That's weird, strange that Storyville didn't add that session to the "Two Not One" set they did recently, they had some other Marsh "Solo" stuff on it, maybe their licence ran out. But I see from AMG that the Interplay release has more tracks, 10 as opposed to 9 on the Storyville, which is something. As a side note, 'Newly Warne' gets 4 out of 5 while 'Posthumous' gets 3 out of 5.
  16. Ain't no party like a Dirk Kuyt party cause a Dirk Kuyt party don't stop... Maybe, but how shit were Italy, they actually finished below NZ and they were the defending champions!!! I'm all for plucky underdogs and all that but a bit of perspective please and lets see how they do in the next W.C.
  17. short AMG review of Posthumous Thanks for that, but I read it already, it didn't really go into that much detail and I was a bit freaked out when he included George Mraz in the "three good but not great musicians" statement, has anyone actually got it?, Susan Chen sounds like she might be interesting. Firstly, the Posthumous album is lovely. It's a quartet album recorded in New York on March 15, 1985 with Warne backed by Susan Chen on piano, who's excellent, George Mraz on bass and Akira Tana on drums. I've not heard the Personal Statement album but it's one I probably wouldn't bother with. I understand it was recorded three days before Warne died and consists of about 30 minutes of him playing unaccompanied sax solos. It sounds like it could have been a warm-up session for a recording that never took place. Cheers Head Man, so "How High How Deep" & "Posthumous" it is then. I have to say I had a feeling that "Personal Statement" was the way you say it is when I say the track listing on AMG; 1 Introduction 2 Statement 1 3 Statement 2 4 Statement 3 5 Statement 4 6 Statement 5 Thanks again.
  18. In relation to the Kiwis, you also have to win a game occasionally to be considered even mediocre. To be honest they probably overachieved by getting 3 draws in what was a very poor competition in terms of quality football.
  19. Mr Renia could you please sit down, you're disturbing the other passangers.
  20. short AMG review of Posthumous Thanks for that, but I read it already, it didn't really go into that much detail and I was a bit freaked out when he included George Mraz in the "three good but not great musicians" statement, has anyone actually got it?, Susan Chen sounds like she might be interesting.
  21. Thanks for the tip, that has one side with duets with Mosca and the other with Mosca and with bass and drums?, according to AMG anyway. I don't suppose that you know anything about these two would you, one of which was out recently; Warne Marsh: Personal Statement And this one, which according to Amazon, is coming out in August; Warne Marsh: Posthumous
  22. Hasn't this guy got enough trophies of his own?
  23. No he hasn't. Rafa Benítez made my life a misery at Liverpool, says Yossi Benayoun. Yes, I saw this as well myself today, I think there's a bit more here. I'm kinda glad he's done it as well, as if you read some of the stuff about Benítez from some Liverpool fans you would swear that he had been taken outside and shot in front of his family, not sacked with a 6 million pound payout for finishing 7th. I think Benítez manipulated the Liverpool fans to a certin extent and anyone of them who watched the team play last season would have admit that there was something very wrong in the camp. The fact that it's Yossi saying it makes it more powerful to be honest, as he never came across as a moaner/whinger. I though he should have stayed on though, but if the deal was already done... Here's Yossi at his new club;
  24. These are just classic, especially the most recent one.
