  1. So glad that BN wasn’t owned by Universal at the time.
  2. Just noticed this. 5 of Sco's best albums for something like $14. Jump on it.

  4. Sonny Rollins with Grant Green? At the Casa Loma, Montreal? From Coda, April/May 1964, as reprinted in The John Coltrane Reference, page 300: "Sonny Rollins was due to open on the 25th (Feb 1964), but his plane got grounded by fog in Toronto...Sonny opened the following night with that fine new guitarist Grant Green along with Spanky DeBrest, bass and Roy McCurdy drums. A week that compared with the Coltrane booking." Would love to hear that... Any idea how long Grant played with Sonny?
  5. I'm enjoying the Piatigorsky RCA/Columbia box. But a little sleuthing revealed an album that's missing from the box. There was an album of Beethoven cello sonatas that Piatigorsky recorded with the pianist Solomon (not sure why he went by only one name...maybe he was very wise). It was released in America on RCA, but the rights were retained by EMI. Currently, it's available on a Testament release. There was a similar situation with the Rubinstein box. Although it was very comprehensive (Sony even licensed Rubinstein's early EMI recordings for the box), it left out the Moscow concert. I guess they couldn't secure rights from Melodiya.

  9. They do. I opened the disc in Finder and copied those video files to my hard drive. Then double-click and they play.

  11. The Bley/Peacock/Motian makes me wonder what else is in ECM's vault.
  12. Many people have said over the years that iTunes evolved into a kludgy mix of repositories and purposes that made no sense as a whole. Hopefully, the new apps will be cleaner and less buggy. I have version 12.9.5.5. It's still the same. The new apps will roll out with the new version of the MacOS. I'm still debating whether to upgrade my copy of Microsoft Office to comply with the new OS. I hate giving Microsoft money.
  13. Yup. I mentioned it in my initial post. Disc 3 is basically the instrumental tracks to Trout Mask. I think John French claimed ownership because it was recorded on his tape recorder. This disc would be a great basis for an evening of Trout Mask Karaoke - be your own Beefheart! But yes, especially since Revenant is out of business, this material would have been perfect as bonus tracks on a 50th anniversary edition of Trout Mask. What really gets me is the ZFT sued Warner Bros for ownership of Trout Mask, won, put out their own edition for a short time (available only on their website), then let it go out of print. Because it was only on their website, it wasn't available on Amazon. Now, it's pretty much gone from the market, unless you want to buy a used copy. Sux.
  14. It appears that the Zappa Family Trust, after reacquiring the rights to Trout Mask Replica, has allowed it to again go out of print. If there was ever an album that deserved the 50th anniversary treatment, this is it. We could have had an edition with new appreciative essays, interviews with surviving Magic Band members, perhaps fleshed out with the material that appeared on Grow Fins. Instead, we have bupkis, due to the dysfunctional Zappa family. It’s a damn shame; Don’s legacy deserves better.
  15. It looks like Chicago phone numbers had letters until 1977. See: https://www.wbez.org/shows/curious-city/the-311-on-chicagos-early-phone-numbers/d48f9310-9b4c-4c78-9ebb-7080cdb856cf
  16. I found this image on a Facebook page. It claims this was from 1978, but I have my doubts (was the Rivers/Holland/Altschul trio playing in 1978?). In any event, the phone # shows as 337-1000. So I'm doubting the OP photo was from the mid-70's. Can someone call the Jazz Showcase and ask them? Current phone #: 312-360-0234.
  17. The phone # listed is DE7-1000. Were letters still in use in the late '70's? I think the conversion to all numbers generally happened in the late '60's. Also, per jazzdisco.org, Joe Dukes last appeared on a McDuff session in 1969. Finally, look at the prices. So, could this be from 1963 (the only time in the Sixties that February 20 & 27 were on a Wednesday)? You can double-check this by researching when the Jazz Showcase moved from N. Rush St. (I couldn't find that info).
  18. https://nypost.com/2019/05/31/apple-is-getting-rid-of-itunes-report/ R.I.P. iTunes. Apple is phasing out its content download and streaming service, Bloomberg reports. CEO Tim Cook will unveil a spread of new features geared to move the company’s focus away from the iPhone starting Monday at the tech giant’s Worldwide Developers Conference. One of these changes is getting rid of iTunes, which has served since 2001 as the home for users’ music, television and podcast libraries. Going forward, three new desktop apps will be unveiled — Music, TV and Podcasts — to house and manage the data. This will match the format already used on iPhones and iPads. Bloomberg’s report did not specify the fate of the iTunes store. Other exciting announcements expected an increasing autonomy of the Apple Watch, which currently depends on iPhones to work, revamps to the Health and Reminders apps and a unified app strategy across devices.
  19. Is that the same jacket??
  20. Release date June 28. http://omnivorerecordings.com/shop/new-songs-for-the-20th-century/
  21. A guess: the mono version might have been made only for radio use. Assuming the country stations were AM, it would've sounded better over the air than folded-down stereo.
  22. I have a Sviatoslav Richter (1961), a Lazar Berman (1980), Rubinstein from 1969 and 1965, Perahia (2002), and Vladimir Horowitz (1953), all from buying big boxed sets when they come down in price. I'll have to pay attention to the differences. Interesting that the shortest is the Horowitz (32:31), and the longest is the Berman (45:33).
  23. Yay! Happy birthday, Jim!
