Don't remember if I posted about this box before. I loved it all, except for the first concert - too much Dolphy being Dolphy (I don't know why he doesn't bother me on the second concert; I think he's more melodic there). The other concerts are great, and made me realize I hadn't listened to him in awhile. He made music with a very definable personality, and I needed it again in my life. I was very impressed with Lonnie Hillyer's work - he's amazing in these concerts. Does anyone have an opinion about this; I'm a little put off by the # of duplicated songs:

There was a prior discussion on the board about this. Some said that the rhythm section was imposed on Cecil, that he wanted a more progressive bassist or drummer. The results were...indescribable. Taken as a trio, Mary Lou was great, but then there's this guy on the other end of the stage... Anyway, hear it for yourself if you dare! It's worth it just for the high concept of seeing Cecil Taylor on Pablo. Though it should have been called "Mary Lou Williams Meets Cecil Taylor," or "The Mary Lou Williams And Cecil Taylor Quartet," or "The Ebullient Mary Lou And Cecil...Together!" or maybe "Cecil Taylor Sits In With The Mary Lou Williams Trio."

Which is your favorite OAC, OAS, etc?
mjzee replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Today, I received in the mail the Antonio Carlos Jobim OAS. Because I always buy these through those European Amazon Marketplace sellers (Zoverstocks, uniqueplace-usa, Rarewaves, etc.), I never know when they'll actually arrive; I barely remembered having ordered this one. -
Art Farmer (Columbia U., 1994) Art Blakey (Village Gate, mid-80's, with George Benson sitting in) Buck Clayton and Jo Jones (with the Countsmen, West End Cafe, mid-70's) Charles Mingus (on a double-bill with Ornette Coleman, NYC Newport Jazz Festival, 1972?) Sonny Rollins (1975, 2000) Mary Lou Williams (with Cecil Taylor) Count Basie (Damrosch Park, Lincoln Center, NYC, a little before he passed)

I own the Membran box. The total time for "East and West of Jazz" is 40:30, which is a full LP. Maybe they lopped off a little of "Little Lou" for space reasons, or maybe the performance fell apart and they salvaged what they could. BTW, on my CD, "Little Lou" is 2:40, and it does fade at the guitar solo. Sadik Hakim (p) Eddie Wright (g) Lloyd Buchanan (b) Kalil Madi (d). 2/13/62.

I have a bunch of these, mostly second-tier rock acts. Like Felser, there are some I haven't bought because I got the box sets, such as The Byrds, Nina Simone, Coltrane, Mingus, etc. Off the top of my head, I liked the OAC/OAS of Brubeck (I have two different ones), Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, Emmylou Harris, and Bob Marley. The following are as yet unbought but are in my Amazon shopping cart (some for many months): Chuck Mangione The Crusaders The Association Sarah Vaughan Aretha Franklin (OAS #2) -

I totally agree with Felser. I owned, I think, 3 of them. So boring. It wasn't just the endless drum solos, it's that the trio format is so hard to make compelling. Some can do it (Sonny comes to mind, of course), but most need an additional horn and piano to make it work. If you cut out all the drum solos, I'm not sure you'd get an LP's worth of music from the 4 volumes combined.

If you go to Amazon and start typing in the search box "Blue Note Beyond The", it will return "Beyond The Notes DVD"; but if you then select that, you get nothing related to the movie. Makes me wonder whether it's slated to come out as a DVD at some time.

College-gate...that's what I call it.

So I was wondering about this...just because it appears on an Internet meme, doesn't mean it's true, y'know? I picked the first assertion listed: "German Government: All college is tuition-free," and did a little research. The truth, naturally, is far more complicated: https://qz.com/812200/is-free-college-possible-germany-shows-there-are-downsides-to-tuition-free-college/ -

I recently encountered Leonid Hambro for the first time, listening through this Leonard Rose box set: So I looked up the relation between Leonid and Lennie. They're not related, but there's this from Lennie's Wikipedia page: One of Hambro's greatest accolades came from famed clarinetist and band leader Benny Goodman, who, when introduced to him by pianist Leonid Hambro (no relation), said of Hambro: "No need, I know who he is; he's the only man that makes me feel self-conscious when I play."

Well, Bill McGlashan was definitely a "do-gooder." He was "one of the tech sector’s leading proponents of how to invest ethically and for social impact," sez Recode. Per CNBC, "He managed TPG Growth, which has invested in companies including Airbnb, Spotify and Uber, and led TPG’s Rise Fund, which is committed to investing for social and environmental good, according to the website." -
Just finished listening to this. Very nice; a great effort. I had one track ("Mellow Mood") on a New World compilation, and the 9/13/46 date (which includes "Commercial Eyes") on a Lucky Thompson compilation called "Smooth Sailing" on Indigo. One frustration: as of today, the info for "On The Coast" has not been uploaded to Gracenote/CDDB. I had to enter it all into iTunes manually. Grrrrr.

On Ben Sidran's site, he's made available all of his Talking Jazz interviews for listening online. See: http://bensidran.com/project/talking-jazz-project -
I'm not seeing the two as being mutually exclusive. Sonny Clark, Herbie Nichols and Grant Green were relatively obscure; their Mosaic boxes made them less so. But I don't think any of us are looking for Mosaic to intentionally lose money. At the Mosaic open house, I told Cuscuna and Scott about the Grateful Dead's current release model: when they prepare a box set for release, they solicit pre-orders and require payment upon order, so they have the money all up front. They basically pay all costs for producing the box set out of the pre-order money, requiring no out-of-pocket spending. It's brilliant, as long as your audience is willing to co-operate. Mosaic hasn't gone that far; they're only asking for pre-orders (without pre-payment) as a gauge for whether the proposed box will sell. But let's face it: if the Woody Herman, say, couldn't get 750 pre-orders, then they'd be foolish to take a chance on it.

I am curious about, and am looking forward to, the touted improved sound quality of the new Mobley box.

Mosaic needs to update the link in the Jazz Gazette email. When I click on "Visit the Jazz Gazette," it takes me to the URL "http://click.umusic-mail.com/expired.html", where it says "This link has expired. Please contact the sender of the email for more information."

That's what I use too. Workhorses, dependable. I've been disappointed with Seagate in the past; WD has been great.

I have very fond memories of discovering his Bach LPs. They still hold up. RIP.

It's simply commerce. These radio stations don't want to have their brands associated with an (alleged) child molester. There's not much upside for them to play his music, at least at this time. If the hubbub dies down, they'll slowly start to reintroduce his music in the rotation. Similar, actually, to the Dixie Chicks. They're now often played on SiriusXM's Y2Country channel.

Per the Mosaic page, this set is now available for pre-order; no ambiguity or hedging.
