I love Patsy Cline. I only have the original Greatest Hits album, which I suspect is sufficient. You should see the movie Coal Miner’s Daughter, with Beverly D’Angelo doing a great turn as Cline.

I remember hearing some of the Garner reissues on Telarc, and thought they were very MOR'ish.

Release date December 6: UNRELEASED JOHNNY GRIFFIN-EDDIE "LOCKJAW" DAVIS TENOR SAX DUEL OW! Deluxe Package Includes Interviews with Tenor Star James Carter and Drummer Kenny Washington and Essays by Historian Ted Panken and Pianist Michael Weiss The supercharged tenor saxophone duo of Johnny Griffin and Eddie ''Lockjaw'' Davis will be heard in full flight on Reel to Real Recordings' previously unreleased live set Ow!, which bows as an exclusive, limited edition Record Store Day LP release Nov. 29. The title - which features stellar, previously unreleased performances captured at the Seattle club the Penthouse in May-June 1962 -- will initially be available on 180-gram vinyl mastered by Bernie Grundman, and subsequently be issued on CD Dec. 6. Reel to Real - a partnership between Vancouver-based jazz impresario and saxophonist Cory Weeds and Resonance Records co-president and noted ''Jazz Detective'' Zev Feldman - was launched on Record Store Day 2018 with a pair of releases that included Swingin' in Seattle, live sessions by Cannonball Adderley's quintet recorded at the Penthouse in 1966-67. Resonance has previously plumbed the Penthouse's deep archives for its albums by Wes Montgomery (Smokin' in Seattle) and the Three Sounds featuring Gene Harris (Groovin' Hard). In his notes included in the 28-page booklet that accompanies the package, Weeds recalls, ''Upon hearing the Johnny Griffin-Eddie ''Lockjaw'' Davis tapes, I got that excited feeling in my stomach again, called Zev, and said, ''We have to put this music out, whatever it takes.'' Feldman adds, ''These recordings are a gift that keeps on giving so much elation and positive vibes, which were captured with this music. It will now live on forever thanks to producer/radio legend Jim Wilke; engineer Fred Stimson, who recorded these broadcasts that were transferred from the original analog tapes; and Charlie Puzzo, Jr., son of the Penthouse's proprietor.''

My guess is 128 GB of memory is sufficient. Multimedia files take up the bulk of memory on a typical user's smartphone, so ask yourself, based on your normal usage: how many GBs of music will I carry around at any one time? How many GBs of photos (especially since you can download the bulk of them to the cloud)? How many movies? I have an iPhone Xr with 64 GB; I limit it to 10 GB of music at a time, which I switch out from time to time, and I still haven't used half my phone's storage. The big thing you need to be prepared for (i.e., "wary" of): phone stores are generally independently operated, usually local chains, who have a working relationship with the carrier. So it's not AT&T selling you the phone, it's Joe Shmo. Joe Shmo really makes money on the accessories, so they'll be really helpful in the beginning, but towards the end of the sales process, will start to lard you up with add-ons. For a lot of them, they won't even ask you if you want them; they'll just "assume" you do. So you have to start getting on your guard about halfway through the sales process (right around the time you've decided you like the dealer and are starting to let your guard down). And even if you need something, like a phone case, the Apple store near you (or Target, or Walmart) might have a very different selection than your AT&T store. So, before you go to the store, determine: the phone case: the look, material, level of protection. You many want to do some research first. do you want a screen protector? Many people don't. And if you do, do you want plastic or glass? do you want an extended warranty? Joe Shmo is going to give you a very hard sell job on this. do you want to store your data in the cloud? (Apple's going to ask you that when you register; I use the dollar-a-month for 50 GB plan.) lord knows what else. Be prepared! Last time I upgraded an iPhone at the Verizon store, they tried selling me on a device where I could read my car's diagnostic information on my iPhone. Huh? And they presented it as a free device! But the monthly subscription cost... And here's a big question: do you want to stay with AT&T? You might want to shop around to see if you can get a better deal from another carrier. Once you buy the phone, you're pretty much stuck with that carrier, especially if you use the 24-month finance option. Don't forget to ask if you can trade in your current phones. On the other hand, if you won't get much money for them, you may want to repurpose them as iPods. Good luck!

Another great musician gone. RIP.

Thanks to you both. I try to keep myself blissfully unconcerned - as long as you’re safe, there’s not much else you can do about it. Jim: the correct term is “inside the loop,” which is inside 610 (interesting that a highway that’s a circle within Houston is somehow an Interstate).

Everyone's on alert. Obviously, it depends on one's particular area. My street is flooded, which is not unusual, but it hasn't come much up the driveway. I'm looking at MyRadar (which is a great free app that everyone should have)...it keeps looking like the storm's going away, but then there's more continually forming to our west, moving east. We're getting robocalls from the city and from my son's school district...they're monitoring the situation. A lot depends on whether the storm lingers tonight - much more rain falls overnight than during the day.

What is up with Mosaic? If they don't put out those Woody Herman and Hank Mobley sets soon, they'll miss the Xmas gift-giving season.

FInal Call for Pre-orders: Turn Me Loose White Man:
mjzee replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I think I'll order this, although I, too, have reservations about the title (not only does it reek of SJW status, it's kind of amateurish). And I'll probably never crack open the book, unless it contains discographical information. Still, the track list looks interesting, especially the early recordings. -

I have a friend with whom I exchange mix "tape" CDs once a month. I guess it's an extension of when we were both on our college free-form radio station. We do listen to each other's CDs; he's very into reggae and world music, while mine veer more towards jazz, classical, and rock, though categories never interested either of us. I feel fortunate, because I find the process of making the discs an outlet for my creativity. The process, at least for me, is different than in the old days. I have all my music digitized. I create a folder for this month's disc in iTunes, and assemble it there, listening and reworking the order of the tracks there, with an ear for the segs and the flow. I also keep an eye on the total time. This is very different than in the old days, where if something wasn't working, you'd either have to accept it or start over. Then, I open all the tracks in Amadeus Pro, using "join files." There, I adjust the volume levels and edit down the silences between tracks. I can even fade one song into the next, similar to what we used to do using the pots on the radio board. When I'm satisfied, I burn the disc from Amadeus Pro. As for the iPod in the car, I plug it into the USB port, and choose aux on my 2015 Subaru's stereo. It works well, and it works similarly well on my wife's 2012 Acura, so I'm not sure why it doesn't work in your Honda. This iPod is old, my guess is 10 years old.

Since you've named-dropped this guy three times in this thread without any response, why not add a little context?

Happy happy!

Oh, OK. I thought you were referring to some services (Soundcloud?) where you could post music and send links to people. One problem with services such as Spotify is your friends need to be on it too. Also, picking from their library, rather than from your own, seems a little too easy, not as personable (at least to me).
-
Interesting. Can you name one or two subscription services? Do they cost $?

Times have definitely changed. I can't make mix "tape" discs for friends anymore, because none of them have anything to play them on (including laptops). As for selling CDs, I figure I've bought them only for my pleasure, so never went into it thinking about resale value. Not sure what the "value" to a particular disc is anyway, if a listener can hear it on a streaming service. We actually have it better than film buffs - I can stream my music all over my house from iTunes on my computer, but studios don't even allow DVDs to be ripped to a home server. (Studios definitely need to make that accommodation, if they want to stanch the loss of DVD sales.) I have an old iPod in my car, connected via USB. I load 20 GB of music on it, random, and love it; every couple of months, I change the music mix. My Subaru has a CD player, but I never use it. It also has SiriusXM; I find myself mostly listening to Little Steven's Underground Garage and Fox News. If you've concluded your CDs have little-to-no resale value, why not give them away here? Not to some public library where people won't appreciate them, but offer them as "Pay It Forward" here, or trade them for other CDs. Might be a lot more satisfying to know they'll have a good new home.

More interesting music vs. less interesting music.

I would like them (Braxton, Corea, Holland, Altschul) to book the Maison de l'O.R.T.F., Paris, France (assuming this still exists...I couldn't tell from this Wikipedia page) for February 21, 2021, which would be 50 years from the Paris-Concert album date. I'd like them to kick off the concert with Nefertiti, and play some of the compositions they played then (Lookout Farm, There Is No Greater Love), along with whatever strikes their fancies now. It would be fascinating to A-B the performances, comparing then and now. Do age and experience win out over youth and enthusiasm, or not?
