  1. The phone # listed is DE7-1000. Were letters still in use in the late '70's? I think the conversion to all numbers generally happened in the late '60's. Also, per jazzdisco.org, Joe Dukes last appeared on a McDuff session in 1969. Finally, look at the prices. So, could this be from 1963 (the only time in the Sixties that February 20 & 27 were on a Wednesday)? You can double-check this by researching when the Jazz Showcase moved from N. Rush St. (I couldn't find that info).
  2. https://nypost.com/2019/05/31/apple-is-getting-rid-of-itunes-report/ R.I.P. iTunes. Apple is phasing out its content download and streaming service, Bloomberg reports. CEO Tim Cook will unveil a spread of new features geared to move the company’s focus away from the iPhone starting Monday at the tech giant’s Worldwide Developers Conference. One of these changes is getting rid of iTunes, which has served since 2001 as the home for users’ music, television and podcast libraries. Going forward, three new desktop apps will be unveiled — Music, TV and Podcasts — to house and manage the data. This will match the format already used on iPhones and iPads. Bloomberg’s report did not specify the fate of the iTunes store. Other exciting announcements expected an increasing autonomy of the Apple Watch, which currently depends on iPhones to work, revamps to the Health and Reminders apps and a unified app strategy across devices.
  3. Is that the same jacket??
  4. Release date June 28. http://omnivorerecordings.com/shop/new-songs-for-the-20th-century/
  5. A guess: the mono version might have been made only for radio use. Assuming the country stations were AM, it would've sounded better over the air than folded-down stereo.
  6. I have a Sviatoslav Richter (1961), a Lazar Berman (1980), Rubinstein from 1969 and 1965, Perahia (2002), and Vladimir Horowitz (1953), all from buying big boxed sets when they come down in price. I'll have to pay attention to the differences. Interesting that the shortest is the Horowitz (32:31), and the longest is the Berman (45:33).
  7. Yay! Happy birthday, Jim!
  8. Please don't get me wrong - it's more a curiosity than a great record. But there's a great spirit of experimentation about it, and a great spirit of detente among some heavy drummers. The fact that they were trying to figure out whether it would work, rather than trying to make a "great record," gives it a looseness I find appealing.
  9. I like Drums Around The Corner. I think it's very different from Orgy In Rhythm; it's more a hard bop album with a lot of drumming. Lee Morgan backed by 3 drummers and a percussionist - what could be bad?
  10. There's something about these albums that seem "of their time"...a stereotypical notion of what "African" drum performances are like. Lots of echo, lots of singing in tandem... more like they should appear on Folkways than on BN. It's especially funny because I think Blakey admitted he'd never been to Africa. To be fair, I'm basing my views on Orgy In Rhythm, because I don't have the others. I'm told they're all very similar, though. It's interesting how different the Solomon Ilori albums are.
  11. Do you realize how politically incorrect both of these stamps would now be considered to be by the intelligencia? Dead white males! And Columbus!?!...topple that statue!
  12. I still buy commemoratives when I go to the post office, and use them when I mail bills, etc. It’s just a fun thing to do. They still issue stamps with musical figures. Just bought a sheet of Marvin Gaye stamps; in the past year, I’ve bought ones of Sarah Vaughan and John Lennon.

  15. Received my boxes today, in fine condition. Thanks!
  16. Horrible story! I've made another donation.
  17. This page has some additional photos from the book.
  18. Listening now to McCoy Tyner Live At Newport. Cranshaw is great on this.

Do we know this? The original GFM post only says "Following his 85th birthday concert at Royce Hall, he suffered an accident..." It might have happened a few weeks later, at a totally different location.

You didn't get the email with the attached 2 hours of outtakes from Blue Lights???
  21. I was referring to the cover shot, which is in the link.
  22. Yeah, this really looks interesting, especially the photos taken outside the studio environment.

Glad it’s all legit. Glad I donated. Growing old is hard.
  24. Agreed. I was thinking of placing an order with CDJapan, but put that money to better use here. (Besides, I already own the Dodo Greene!)
