  1. Charles Lloyd and Mickey Hart:
  2. There's also this album, mentioned here: http://www.discogs.com/Louis-Armstrong-Victoria-Spivey-Hociel-Thomas-Lillie-Delk-Christian-Louis-The-Blues-Singers-1925-192/release/2893750 I used to own a French CBS LP with a side of Bertha Chippie Hill and a side of Lillie Delk Christian, both backed by Louis. I don't know how many other blues singers he accompanied (though I wouldn't call Christian a blues singer - more of an operatic emo type).

    Lou Donaldson

    Yes, happy birthday!
  4. Glad I could help; I saw it mentioned on a forum at dead.net. I bought one too; with the search function in the Kindle software, this might even be more useful than the printed version.
  5. Interesting; I wish them luck.
  6. Great clip! Thanks for posting. I recognize Jimmy Heath and Al Foster. Is that Buster Williams on bass? And who's the trumpeter? And what's with the backdrop?!? It looks like Rand Paul with a rifle.
  7. For 2 days only, Amazon is offering the Kindle version of Deadbase 50 for $2.99.
  8. Does anyone remember that weird cheapo Columbia LP series, cheaper even than Harmony, that had the original Friday and Saturday titles? For a long while, that was the only way you could buy them - not in the Miles section, but in the budget racks. I think this was one of the covers:
  9. Yeah, Mobley really sounds like a bullied man. You can hear his self-confidence shrinking (or at least I imagine it as such). Sonny Stitt probably gave off a "don't mess with me" vibe, so Miles left him alone.
  10. Nice; I might get this.
  11. I've owned it since it came out. I think Mobley and Miles don't jell, Jimmy Cobb plays rushed tempos, and IIRC Miles's solos are more a collection of sounds than coherent solos. Wynton Kelly is the box's saving grace.
  12. That's what started me on asking about his discography: I was listening to the Cozy Cole-led date on the Mosaic Hawkins box.
  13. I remember that, too. And wondered "where is Part 1?", which of course there was, but... Also from the same session (as it turned out) was Turvey, Parts 1&2. No doubt put together as The Complete Topsy-Turvey by someone.... This is interesting; from Wikipedia: William Randolph "Cozy" Cole (October 17, 1909 – January 9, 1981)[1] was an American jazz drummer who scored a #1 Cashbox magazine hit with the record "Topsy Part 2". "Topsy" peaked at number three on Billboard Hot 100, and at number one on the R&B chart.[2] It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[3] The track peaked at No. 29 in the UK Singles Chart in 1958.[1] The recording contained a lengthy drum solo, and was one of the few drum solo recordings that ever made the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single was issued on the tiny Brooklyn-based Love Records label.
  14. Does anyone know of a Cozy Cole discography? He seems to have had an interesting and varied career, and it would be nice to follow it through the years. TIA.
  15. Happy birthday, Mr. Heath. The consummate musician, composer, arranger.
  16. Just got my latest care package from CDJapan: the 3 Dave Baileys, plus 3 Universal titles: Ben Webster's Soulville, Coleman Hawkins Alive! At The Village Gate, and Jim Hall - Jazz Guitar. These may be my last for awhile, as we're starting to prepare for our son's Bar Mitzvah next year.

  18. CDDB (aka Gracenote) is the database from where iTunes pulls track data. The data first has to be uploaded, usually by the label. Here are instructions: http://diymusician.cdbaby.com/musician-tips/how-to-submit-your-track-information-to-gracenote-using-itunes-11/
  19. I had the exact same problem. I was very nervous as I very slowly worked on removing disc 2 from the hub. I found a solution that kinda works, at least for me. Disc 2 is held in by 4 spokes. I gently pushed in 2 of them, so now the disc is being held in place by only 2 spokes, which makes it far easier to remove. The spokes haven't yet broken off.

    Mark Murphy RIP

Very sad. I'll play the 32Jazz compilation later today. RIP.

    Tootie

    Get better soon.
  22. I recently got the Bobby Hackett, along with the Beehive. Haven't listened to them yet so can't comment, but I was intrigued by the Hackett samples on Mosaic's website. I'd encourage others to do the same. It was released in 2001, so it's surprising it's still around. I'm still on the fence about the Duke. I have most of this on that 40-CD "History" set released in 1999, so the question is whether the better sound + booklet is sufficient to spring for the Mosaic.
  23. Allen, will you be loading track info into CDDB?
  24. I remember hearing them back in the day. Humor is very subjective, and 40-year old humor perhaps more so.
  25. Wonder if this, previously released on Pablo, will be on it; recorded April 1, 1956:
