  2. Has anyone here heard this? The EIP Laser Turntable plays records without touching them - Decoded Magazine
  3. Got it today. The bonus disc has tracks from 3/27/72 and 3/21/72. On a different note, WSJ reported that there will be pay per view broadcasts of the final gigs; details to follow.
  4. We had that album. I still think about it sometimes. He's about to go onstage to open for Richie Havens. The crowd is chanting "Richie! Richie!" The guard looks at Brooks, who's in the wings. "Your name Richie?" "No." "They're gonna kill you."
  5. Do you know about Live At Birdland 1957? It's a limited edition, but Eastward seems to still have it in stock: http://www.eastwindimport.com/product-info.asp?CategoryName=Marshmallow+Records&ProductID=2138
  6. Does anyone here remember the Hardly-Worthit Players? They had a few records that were minor hits on AM radio: take-offs of Robert Kennedy and Senator Everett Dirksen doing pop hits. Pretty funny stuff. RFK's assassination put an end to that band.
  7. We should mention all those Redd Foxx albums on Laff...y'know, the ones in the back of the record store, with the header card stating the section was for "adults only." They all had the same cover, just different colors. The first Redd Foxx album I actually heard was the Atlantic album: And has anyone here heard this? A comedy album!:
  8. Interview with Bill Kreutzmann in today's WSJ.

    Nina Simone

Nina Simone documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? released a first trailer Wednesday. The film is directed by Liz Garbus, and will premiere on Netflix and in select theaters June 26. You can see the trailer here: http://www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/Movies/2015/04/30/Nina-Simone-documentary-releases-first-trailer/5791430400673/
  10. I think I was at the 7/1/75 concert. It was billed as "The Midnight Miles" because the concert began at midnight. It was a great concert. I don't know why only one track is being included here; the entire concert was available on one of those download sites.
  11. Ubu, thanks to your recommendation, I've finally decided to buy the Archiv Baroque Box (@ $77.31). I also went for the Seon box (@ $117.65) since I'm so enjoying the Vivarte box.
  12. I think about this thread from time to time. I found another candidate, but managed to solve it myself. Still, it's interesting: "Dead cats on the line." Lyrics https://youtu.be/Hbr0YcZxk2Y Explanation Still not clear how this phrase came about.
  13. Good to know. I've been thinking of buying the Gould Bach box, which has recently dropped in price. Better to wait for this (to drop in price).
  14. I'm not understanding why the Japanese would use older masterings when they have newer ones in their possession. There's no cost savings to doing so.
  15. There's a cool screen saver on Macs that's a tile representation of the covers in your iTunes library. That goes a little way towards showing people what you have.
  16. Abdullah Ibrahim & Ekaya?!? Wow! Lotsa good stuff there.
  17. I wonder if Sonny is or will be writing his memoir.

  19. Per "The John Coltrane Reference" book, a letter dated 7/28/60 from Nesuhi Ertegun of Atlantic to Teddy Reig of Roulette gave permission for Roulette to record Coltrane under these conditions: 1) Only one side of an LP could be released, and it would be part of Symphony Sid's "Birdland" series on Roulette. 2) The LP must say "by arrangement with" or "by courtesy of" Atlantic Records. 3) Roulette must allow Atlantic to record one of Roulette's artists at a future date.
  20. A portable oxygen tank, painted vivid colors and fashioned with a drumhead, sits near a wooden crutch adorned with bells, beads and wheels. These objects—improvised instruments and freestanding sculptures—were made by multi-instrumentalist Douglas Ewart from items found on the street. They make perfect sense among the 83 items in “Free at First: The Audacious Journey of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians,” an exhibition curated by Carol L. Adams and Janis Lane-Ewart at the DuSable Museum of African American History through Sept. 6, one of many events commemorating the 50th anniversary of an organization now best known by its abbreviation, AACM. 21. Stollman's Wikipedia page will answer some of your questions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Stollman I wonder whether his parents were Holocaust survivors.
  22. You probably haven’t heard of Place, but it’s likely that you’ve heard his work. Over the past three decades, Place has been the central figure researching, organizing and ultimately releasing the recordings represented in one of the world’s most important collections of 20th-century music. The Rinzler archives includes the 12 record labels now collectively known as Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, with the original Folkways acquisition featuring the key works of Guthrie, Pete Seeger and, of course, Lead Belly. 23. Next Dave's Picks: Academy of Music, NYC, 3/26/72:
  24. He definitely fit his times. I can't imagine an East Village without Stollman (but that East Village is long gone, I guess). RIP.
