  1. Release date May 5: Hancock Miles
  2. It's been almost a month, and I still haven't received my amazon.it order. I'm hoping it's just due to the bad weather conditions on the east coast. Hmmm.
  3. True, but shipping from Japan adds quite a bit. I don't do bittorrent; too concerned about viruses.
  4. Thanks for the link. "New Wine in Old Bottles" is also very good. I am playing it right now. McLean is in great form. Nice transition to "Round Midnight" theme. Recommended. http://www.allmusic.com/album/new-wine-in-old-bottles-mw0000188133 What is KJLH? Kindness, Joy, Love, Happiness If anyone's interested in mp3 downloads, 4 of these Great Jazz Trio albums are available as the box set "Objects Appear Closer" from Amazon for $24.75. The 4 titles are KJLH, Direct From LA, Milestones, and The Great Tokyo Meeting. See: http://www.amazon.com/Objects-Appear-Closer-Great-Jazz/dp/B000W4KT8C
  5. It's also part of the Jazz on Vogue box.
  6. I haven't seen Whiplash, but it seems Iverson is too quick (eager?) to pseudo-psychoanalyze people he's never met based on one point of opinion.
  7. I remember owning the Japanese King vinyl of "Cool Struttin' Volume 2" where the liner notes writer (some Japanese guy) made the claim that Alfred Lion had nothing to do with the success of Blue Note, that it was all due to the musicians. Whatever.
  8. Will Friedwald's reminiscence about Clark Terry in today's WSJ: An Individual Who Stood Out Among Individuals
  9. That's true with iOS, but I've seen no evidence of that with OS X. With an upgrade a couple of years ago I lost the ability to use my Nikon slide/negative scanner and "The Complete New Yorker" dvd set. I found a third party developer with software to run the scanner but the New Yorker set remains a large paperweight. You can't use the Mac's Image Capture app with the Nikon? It works fine with my decade-old Epson scanner.
  10. Not a problem: Samsung Electronics Ultra-Thin Optical Drives Yup, I use one of those; they work fine.
  11. Or get a Mac... Office 2011 for Mac is still available for purchase, no subscription needed.
  12. Very sad. RIP.

    Ralph Towner

    Excellent! Happy birthday!
  14. Curious. RIP.
  15. Forget glow sticks—the latest must-have accessories being pushed to young festivalgoers are high-end earplugs. Startup Doppler Labs has signed a deal with Anschutz Entertainment Group’s Goldenvoice promotion division to distribute more than 100,000 free pairs of its Dubs branded turquoise soft-molded earplugs—valued at $10 each—at AEG’s Coachella festival in California this spring. Pink, blue and teal-rimmed versions of its higher-end “acoustic filters” will be on sale at the event for $25 a pair. More here: Earplugs, a New Dance-Fest Must-Have? - WSJ
  16. I'd love to, but no. Still holding out hope that they'll send a video feed to movie theaters around the country.
  17. Just now listening to Dave's Picks 12 (11/4/77). Disc 2 is just wonderful.

When I was working at a jazz record store in the late seventies, the hot albums were Touchdown, Mangione's Feels So Good, Spyrogyra's Morning Dance, Jeff Lorber's Soft Space, and Earl Klugh's Magic In Your Eyes. I have a soft spot in my heart for all of these, they remind me of a time and place.
  19. Based on the sale, I just bought the Pass; while I was there, I also picked up the Rosemary Clooney. Obviously, my answer is yes to the set. This isn't the Pass of the Pablo years, where he needed a producer who'd rein in some of his more soporific tendencies. The '60's Pass is full of piss and vinegar, really lively. I haven't heard the Les McCann titles, though I'm looking forward to them, but For Django, Catch Me and Joy Spring are all excellent.
  20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7wN_2n7G14 Man, that was good. Thanks for posting.
  21. From Wikipedia: Clooney left Columbia Records in 1958, doing a number of recordings for MGM Records and then some for Coral Records. Finally, toward the end of 1958, she signed with RCA Victor Records, where she stayed until 1963. In 1964, she went to Reprise Records, and in 1965 to Dot Records. Also from Wikipedia: Clooney sang a duet with Wild Man Fischer on "It's a Hard Business" in 1986
  22. If you can, try to hear the album For The Duration. It totally turned my head about these songs that, if I gave them any thought, I just thought of them as standards. The songs that were popular during WWII had a deep resonance for those living through the war, or sending their loved ones off to fight. A really powerful "concept album," as we used to say.
  23. RIP. I'll mumble some in his honor.
