Are there any box bargains currently available?
mjzee replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
ImportCDs currently has a Universal sale. I noticed the two volumes of Ella's 12 Nights in Hollywood for $5.70 each: Volumes 1 & 2 Volumes 3 & 4 -
I've never heard of him. At first glance, I thought this thread was about Terry Riley.

Is streaming technology saving the music industry?
mjzee replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Audio Talk
Since this thread is titled "Is streaming technology saving the music industry?", I think it's important to quote this article in full: The war of words continues between music streaming service Spotify and powerful pop icon Taylor Swift. After Swift removed her entire catalog from the streaming service last week, Spotify boss Daniel Ek said that she, along with other mainstream artists, was on track to earn over $6 million in royalties this year. But Scott Borchetta, CEO of Swift's label Big Machine, has countered that claim, saying that the "Shake It Off" singer had earned less than $500,000 from Spotify streams in the US in the last 12 months. A Spotify spokesperson told Time that Swift had been paid a total of $2 million over the last 12 months for the global streaming of her songs, but Borchetta still maintains that Spotify is a blight on the music industry. "The facts show that the music industry was much better off before Spotify hit these shores," he said, clarifying the amount Spotify paid out over the last year as "the equivalent of less than 50,000 albums sold." According to Borchetta, Swift earns more from her videos on Vevo than she did from having her music on Spotify. Of course, half a million dollars in a vacuum is an impressive figure, but Swift is phenomenally successful in terms of sales, and one of a few remaining mega pop stars. Her most recent album, 1989, became the first this year to sell more than a million copies in a week — a feat only equaled by 18 albums in history. Unlike most, Taylor Swift can make millions off the back of traditional album sales, but by keeping her music away from Spotify even as it begs for her to come back, she and Borchetta say they're trying to make the larger point that the service doesn't pay its artists a reasonable fee. "[Taylor Swift] is the most successful artist in music today," Borchetta says. "What about the rest of the artists out there struggling to make a career?" -
Fasstrack, I like that you listened to the VV sessions with fresh ears. As they're considered part of "the canon," there's a tendency to be respectful and dutiful towards them, rather than just listening to see what you hear. I've never been that into BE, but happen to own a lot of his work by picking up boxed sets when they're inexpensive. I'm now plowing through the Verve box (I'm up to disc 16), and most of this work can best be considered "pleasant" (I'm not referring to the repetitive content the box contains, since that's obviously not BE's fault). To echo some of the other posters, the discs where he seems to wake up are the ones with driving drummers kicking him, most notably PJJ.

I've attended 2 jazz concerts at the Wortham Theatre in Houston; they were OK but I can't say the acoustics knocked me out. I've always loved Town Hall in NYC. Re Atlanta, I once saw Tricia Yearwood at the Fox Theatre and loved the experience; is it still around?

Gladys Knight could sing the phone book and make it sound great.

Catching up on my Dave's Picks listening; just listened tonight to disc 2 of DP11 (11/17/72). A beautiful performance, with a very trippy Other One.

Just noticed this thread. Hope you had a happy b-day, GA, and enjoy the DownBeat book.

Agreed about Crutchfield. My Pro-Ject turntable was the first (and thus far the only) thing I've bought from them, and it was a pleasant experience. I'm always leery about dealing with electronic retailers because they always seem to "hard sell" you; Crutchfield wasn't like that at all. Very helpful, and I like their website and the info there (including the user forums).

Crutchfield is always reliable. I bought my Pro-Ject turntable from them. Price should be the same as on Amazon.

Is streaming technology saving the music industry?

Every time I see the topic of this thread, I think "naw, this thing is settled: streaming technology is KILLING the music industry." -
Another vote for The Magnificent TJ. The CD has a beautiful duet with Kenny Burrell as a bonus track. And a great cover:

Got the subwoofer yesterday and hooked it up. Sounds very nice, Scott; thanks for the recommendation. The sound nicely complements my speakers; very smooth. I connected it pretty quickly, so I'm sure with time I'll be able to tweak the settings. Right now, for example, I'm letting the subwoofer handle the crossover; when I get time (which may not be for awhile), I'll try switching things so the preamp handles that, and we'll see whether there's an improvement. I was surprised by how big it is.

I'm in a pissy mood right now, don't feel like shoveling Bob more of my money. I'm sure it'll pass, but I'm standing firm right now.

And the world is slowly moving away from hard drives and toward solid state.

FWIW, yesterday's Wall St Journal had a short conversation with Tim Cook which included the following: AUDIENCE: As someone who’s accumulated just under 40,000 music tracks in his library I have many friends, relatives, salivating for their 160 iPod Classic only to find out that you discontinued manufacturing it two months ago. Why? MR. COOK: Because we couldn’t get the parts anymore. AUDIENCE: Not even in China? MR. COOK: Not even anywhere on Earth.

I got an email tonight: they've finally prepared the liner notes! They sent a link to download them (11 pages). Interesting stuff, including a history of Mickey Fields.
