I have many Tristano recordings, but get stumped when people refer to the Tristano "school", which I take it is not just the musicians who studied with him, but of a particular philosophy or concept or approach to music (similar to but different than Ornette's harmolodics). Without my reading books on Tristano, could someone here summarize this "school" in a few sentences? Does this refer to the in-tandem playing of the saxophonists over a steady backbeat, or is there more involving a philosophy regarding harmonies? Remember, I fall asleep easily, so please keep it pithy.
  2. I wonder who owns the Dial material. I have the Parker 1944-1948 package released by Savoy/Atlantic; it says the Dial recordings are the property of Spotlite.
  3. I bought a 4-inch memory foam pad for our bed a number of years ago. I liked it a lot, but my wife hated the feel of it. It's a very personal decision, so try to test before you buy. BTW, if you're thinking of a memory foam pad, they're really heavy and a bitch to dispose of.

    Siri

I'm playing the first disc in the Vivarte box (J.S. Bach - The works for lute in original keys & tunings, performed by Lutz Kirchhof) on my stereo. I've just upgraded my iPad Mini to iOS8. Under "Tips," it said you can ask Siri to identify the music that's playing. So, in the middle of the piece, I asked Siri "What song is this?" Siri correctly identified the piece and the performer. I am very impressed. So, for those occasional posts here that ask us to identify a track, I say: first ask Siri!

  14. Just finished listening to the box. Was surprised how much I liked the last 2 albums: Borderline and Get Rhythm. Superior stuff.
  15. Release date November 11: In the legendary Captain Beefheart discography, attention usually focuses on the carefully wrought, experimental music heard on Trout Mask Replica. As a consequence, the three stellar albums recorded soon after Lick My Decals Off, Baby, The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot are often overlooked. Rhino intends to change that with a four-disc collection that revisits the albums Captain Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet) recorded with the Magic Band in the early Seventies. It includes all three albums, which have been remastered for the first time, as well as an entire disc featuring 14 previously unissued outtakes from that era.

  18. I like the late Milt Jacksons.
  19. It looks like the iPod classic is totally gone. I tried looking for it online: no one had it in stock.
  20. Try ripping an exact copy to a new CD blank, either by using Toast or similar software on your computer, or by using a digital connection (via a Toslink cable) between a CD player and a recordable CD player. Then see if the new rip will play in your Arcam. I've had good success with this technique.
  21. How is this one? I've never heard of it: UCCU-90082 Milt Jackson & Ray Brown Memphis Jackson [Limited Release]
  22. Very sad; RIP. I greatly enjoy the Mosaic set. What I most remember Sample for, of course, was his huge commercial explosion: Street Life and Carmel. Huge, huge sellers, played everywhere.
  23. The iPod classic doesn't have wifi. But if you buy a replacement device that does have wifi, you can get something like this: This is a Seagate Wireless Plus 2TB Mobile Cloud Storage with Built-in WiFi Streaming (STCV2000100), but lots of manufacturers make similar devices. It basically broadcasts its own wifi signal. So you'd load your music onto it, then connect your device to it via wifi, and listen throughout your house.
  24. I can't speak to the Zune, but there are ways to repurpose old iPods and make them still useful. For example, my alarm clock has an older iPod connection. I use the TuneIn Radio app on that iPod, and am able to wake up to any radio station without static.
