Well, to answer my own question, the material with Dizzy and Bird, and the Dance of the Infidels from August 29.

But Impulse could have done that. Must have something to do with who owns the tapes.

I'm curious as to what the connection is with Resonance. Why couldn't Impulse put this out on their lonesome?

I saw him once with Scofield at the Bottom Line, right before "Hand Jive" came out. He's definitely good, though he doesn't have what you would call "star quality." He's a great supporting player. Let's not overlook "Saudades" with Trio Beyond (Scofield and DeJohnette).

The comments on archive.org indicate this is a hot show. Curious about the bonus disc - maybe the other night of the engagement (12/11).

I really liked that album, "50,000,000 Monk Fans Can't Be Wrong."

You know, even if the sound isn't stellar, there is simply no other way to get the material on this box (without spending insane prices). I'll reserve judgement until I receive it, and will be quietly hopeful.

Thanks, Jim; I really enjoyed that. I disagree that "it could totally have happened without Elvin" - this track has a harder edge and an insistent groove that Oregon wasn't doing. He drives them more into a Yusef Lateef area. It's great that Collin Walcott, accompanying Elvin, sounds more like a Ray Barretto on one of Lou Donaldson's records. Very nice.

What's the music on the Chubby Jackson like? This band was prominently mentioned in Ira Gitler's book "Swing To Bop."

Make sure it contains the 3 bonus tracks not on the original album: Lunarcy, Love Me, How About You. I also think it's a good album. It's interesting to hear straight-ahead jazz recorded in a world-class studio. I enjoyed Christlieb more than Marsh; Lou Levy is a monster.

I've just ordered it, waiting for it to arrive. Still unclear about the tapes' provenance. They say they were recorded by Boris Rose, and the recorder was inside Birdland. I thought all of Boris's recordings were made off the radio.

I'd challenge the idea that Oregon is Towner's band. The other members make equal contributions and I think have an equal say in direction.
