If it ever actually comes out...

What I found helpful to do is scan the back cover using a high dpi (you can also do this by taking a photo with your cellphone), then viewing the picture on my computer.

Yes, but, can we talk? While The Onion may have used an "edgy" slur to try to make their point, their point was predictably mainstream liberal (as in, it's bad to want to keep the Redskins name). That is why nothing will really be done to The Onion for the article. Their POV is as predictable as Letterman's, hardly edgy, hardly surprising. I think they need some diversity in POV amongst their writers.

Amazon Prime - free for one month trial
mjzee replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Prime is good. Even with Super Saver Shipping, it could take a week or more for delivery. Now I have it in 2 days, pretty much like clockwork. Amazon is a good resource for a whole bunch of things. If I have trouble finding something in a local store, inevitably it's easier to purchase from Amazon. Recent examples: graphite, citric acid, Simple Human garbage bags. Having worked for many years in a retail environment, I feel really bad about these developments: I think about all the people who work in retail, and how this is making it much harder for them. I hope retailers can innovate enough to keep ahead of Amazon. -
I liked this line: "Don’t rest in peace, Lou. Wherever you are now, I hope you’re giving ’em hell." NY Post

Here's a good obit from the AP. I liked this line: "(He) was as essential a New York artist as Martin Scorsese or Woody Allen." NY Post

I'm reading the specs on Amazon of the Denon AVR-E400. They list as one of its features that it has "Apple's AirPlay Wireless Streaming." But in reading customer comments and questions, it turns out the unit does not have wireless connectivity with AirPlay. The receiver needs to be connected to your network via an Ethernet cable. Interesting wrinkle.

RIP. I remember playing Metal Machine Music on my college radio show, really just to tick people off. Saw him live around 1984 with the band with Robert Quine; one of the loudest concerts I ever attended.

Interesting recommendation in today's WSJ: It takes more than a soundbar to create surround sound convincing enough to rival a megaplex. For that, you need an old-fashioned A/V receiver and the multiple speakers that go with it. One of the most compact combinations: the Marantz NR1504 slimline A/V receiver paired with Energy's Take Classic 5.1 bookshelf speakers. The Marantz's five channels pump out a respectable 60 watts each, and its chassis is considerably squatter than comparable systems. Meanwhile the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speakers deliver full, well-balanced sound—especially for their size—and come with a 200-watt subwoofer. Wiring up a system like this is no small undertaking, but the payoff is more than worth it. $499 for the receiver,us.marantz.com; $350 for speakers, energy-speakers.com

Agreed. I mean, we can't sanitize everything. Look how watered down Saturday Night Live is compared to the 70s and 80s. Like everything has to be politically correct these days? Does that also apply to the name of the football team? Actually, I'll answer my own question. While I don't think much of anyone really cares about the Redskins name or is offended by it, identity politics is pretty powerful in this country. There's an incentive for the grievance activists to keep up the pressure (higher media profile, more donations), and so the name will probably wind up changing. Whether that's a good thing or not, who knows; time marches on. I keep thinking of the movie "Ghost World." Those who have seen it will know what I'm referring to. Was it really such a bad thing for the fast food chain to change their name and logo? Could they really have retained it, and why would that be important to them? You count the cards and you see how this will end.

Apple release OS X Mavericks as free download

Review of Mavericks from ZDNet. -
Thanks for the info re audio advisor. As for price point, it's really a chicken-and-egg kind of thing: I'd first need to look at the group of preamp/amps that'll do what I need, get a feel for what that would cost ($100 would be totally unrealistic, for example), then choose amongst that selection. I did some preliminary shopping last night on Crutchfield and Amazon; it seems the choice would be between Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo and Marantz. I realize my needs are: * 7.1 speaker capability (I saw now they have 9.1; is that really necessary?) * at least 2 HDMI ports * a photo input * per the Oppo manual (I just got an Oppo BDP-103), they recommend HDMI v1.4 with decoding capability for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. * It would be nice to have support for Apple AirPlay I see the price range for the above is roughly $500 - $800, and I'm cool with that. But since sound quality is so important to me, which of the above manufacturers really delivers the goods? I lean towards Denon and Marantz, but am looking for others' suggestions. I truly do appreciate any input.

This does not seem sluggish. I have a 2007 iMac and was pleasantly surprised it still qualified for the upgrade. -
The Onion has always been raw. Remember "Alzheimer's Sufferers Demand Cure For Pancakes?" Their more grievous sin for the past few years is they haven't been funny very often. Regarding the article posted by OP, it probably could have been written a lot more sharply and funnier; the reason we're focussed on its bad taste is because there isn't much else there.

I'll be shopping for a new A/V preamp/amp (don't need a tuner). I'd like good sound quality, at least one HDMI input, and 7.1 output. Price is an issue, but I'd be willing to spend for something good. Does anyone have thoughts as to what's out there now? TIA.

Courtesy of a link on Mosaic's home page. Good think piece, but it obviously discounts all the people who've studied/played music yet have not become successes in other fields. NY Times

Apple release OS X Mavericks as free download

I'm exploring it now. So far, seems like a smooth experience. One program that I used often, an Epson scanning software, no longer works under Mavericks. **sigh** -
When I saw Miles in concert in 1975, I was surprised to see him walk onstage in a suit and tie. The suit might have been a 3-piece suit.

The last time I looked into speaker wire was a good 15 - 20 years ago, but back in the day, Audioquest was considered a good quality, less expensive speaker wire. Look into this: Amazon.

I'm in. This seems like fun.

Or is it simply that Blue Note's new owner isn't concerned about past "rejected" decisions?

Just found a used copy of this in a Half Price Books for $1. This concert was the day of my high school graduation; I stepped out of the party my parents threw to attend it.

Are there any box bargains currently available?

Also, the flip side of the 45 of Gotta Serve Somebody was Trouble In Mind...don't think that's been reissued anywhere. There was also a song he did on a Chabad telethon, backed by TP & The Heartbreakers: "Thank God." Very good song, but never saw it on record. -
Don't underestimate how much of this could be due to professional jealousy.
