  1. I worked for awhile with Danny Davis of Sun Ra's band, and he always recommended apple cider vinegar and honey.
  2. Turn on the heat?
  3. Along the lines of the MJQ box, I'd like to see a John Lewis on Atlantic box. It might force a reevaluation of all this interesting stuff, especially with a well-written booklet.
  4. I don't know what this means. Think Braxton's "For Trio" at one end, and Brotzmann's "Machine Gun" on the other.
  5. Huh. I've owned the Sam Rivers Mosaic for years, but never thought of it as a "Free Jazz" box...maybe disc 3, but otherwise pretty straight-ahead. Perhaps Free Jazz can be thought of as a continuum with "abstract" at one end and "noise" at the other, but not sure it encompasses "melodicism." Anyway, for Free Jazz box sets, Coltrane's Live in Japan, also Impulse Box Sets 4 and 5. Sun Ra's Artyard In A Box. And how about:
  6. Look at the left column on the screen, under "By time period." Change "Content I have not read" to "New since my last visit."
  7. It looks cleaner, and it definitely loads faster. Searches are fast too. I do miss the subtitles, tho, as they lent a literary air; this is more "just the facts, ma'am." I'm looking forward to using it.
  8. I really liked Volkher's post, and I'm glad he shared it. I never had much patience for Allen's posts (I actually have him on ignore), and this gave me a very different insight.

    Ted Curson RIP

Never seen that one before. Who's on it...apart from Ted Curson, that is? Was it Ray Drummond and Roy Haynes?

    Ted Curson RIP

Yes, that's the one I had, but I don't remember the "+1"...did they add tracks with an additional musician?
  11. Many of these are also available on eMusic for download: Dave Burns - Warming Up Dave Burns - Dave Burns Bill English Mel Powell Ellis Larkins/Ruby Braff Jimmy Rushing Mel Powell Bunky Green - Places We've Never Been Ray Bryant etc.
  12. How do the 78's that Yazoo has on their compilations sound so good - do they use a VPI?
  13. No, no, we're all going to lose the subtleties...WE'RE ALL GOING TO SHOUT LIKE THIS!
  14. What does it not mean to have moved on?
  15. Thanks. I also found a video on the Pro-Ject website; it looks pretty straightforward: How to Set Up Your Pro-Ject Turntable (see middle of page)
  16. Saw this on eMusic yesterday; glad to know it's good.

    Ted Curson RIP

My post got lost, too. I enjoyed his trio album on Interplay. It's hard for a trumpeter to sustain interest over the course of an LP in a trio setting, but he did it. RIP.
  18. So I went for a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon in red; ordered it through Crutchfield.
  19. Happy birthday, Paul!
  20. It ends in a question mark, sooooo.....?
  21. Dave's Picks 2013 subscriptions now available from dead.net.
  22. This has just been added on eMusic. Is it previously unreleased? eMusic
  23. Halloween was postponed last year in Connecticut, too. I think that storm was an early snowfall, and lots of it.
  24. The movie will also be shown in Houston on the same day (Nov 10) at 6:30 PM: Houston Cinema Arts Society
