Just got back from the gig. Great show! Nice turnout, and all the musicians were in great form. Adam Nussbaum is a monster! And Gary Versace is reeeeeeeally good. If you know the album "Tactics," this was similar to that but better, because I like Versace more than Dan Wall - more tuneful, a little more extroverted. And Abercrombie was just great. It turns out that both Abercrombie and Versace grew up in Greenwich, so it was a little homecoming. Glad I went. Here's a pic I took on my cellphone:

In "How About You", it sounds like he planned it out, and sang it twice! Which gives me the creeps.

Found this great little tidbit in Orrin Keepnews' liner notes to the Monk/Coltrane Complete Riverside Recordings: I still consider this to have been the first time I really heard Trane. As for my reaction, by the time they had finished this first and only take, I had a question to ask. Ignoring the intercom, I went charging from the control room into the studio. "John," I still remember asking, "What's your record situation?" I will also never forget his precise answer: "I signed with Prestige three weeks ago." It was certainly my biggest record business disappointment to that point, and I could not have had many bigger ones since. The full story did not make me feel any better. Bob Weinstock of Prestige had not necessarily been any wiser than his competitors. Actually, with several strong-selling artists under contract - Miles, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Billy Taylor, Red Garland - he was not in hot pursuit of more. But he was under particular pressure from Garland to record his good friend and Davis bandmate, and so, without an excessive amount of enthusiasm, Weinstock had offered Coltrane a modest two-year deal and it had been accepted.

Same here. *crossing fingers* Did you guys happen to order them from Newbury Comics? I happened to order a copy from Newbury today through the Amazon marketplace (before reading your posts here). I got mine from Newbury through Amazon.
-
I just sprung for this; $13.99 + shipping from our good friends at ImportCDs, through Amazon. Looks like a good compilation of the original recordings of things Bob covered on The Minneapolis Tapes, etc., plus his formative listening experiences: The Roots of Bob Dylan

Got my copy of the Monk/Coltrane today. Perfect copy too: sealed, no cutout, no scrape along the barcode.

Someone I worked with grew up in Northern Michigan and lived in Detroit. He remembered that show, and said he saw Bird once on it. RIP, Soupy. Also formative on my intellect. I still remember Bachalafaka, White Fang and Black Tooth, and, of course, the pies.

I caught the Revolutionary Ensemble once at Studio Rivbea; bought my copy of The Psyche at that gig. RIP.

Women & Their Footwear - Forever a Mystery to Me
mjzee replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hell, anybody can get that. But none of us really can. -
I recently bought Fearless Leader from bargainentertainment. It was delivered this week with no problem. Maybe your local post office was in a bad mood. Did you tip the carrier last year?
-
This has to be the most absurd price I've ever seen: $1.37, plus $2.98 shipping, for a new copy: Monk/Coltrane Riverside

And again... for the third time... IT'S A GIRL!!!

Awwwwwwww... Congrats! -
I don't see it on the Ikea website. Do you know if it's a current item?

So the day after "release date," Amazon emailed me that there would be a delay, and what would I like to do? Translation: you ain't gonna get it, OK to cancel. So I did.

For those who are in the area and are interested, there will be a free show by John Abercrombie, Gary Versace and Adam Nussbaum at the Greenwich Library's Cole Auditorium on Sunday, 10/25. Not sure of the exact time, but think it's at 3:30 PM. I'm looking forward to it.

Ditto. The print quality on that one would make a home-made Sun Ra Saturn LP look like something from Music Matters. All of those 70s Argo reissues by Cadet seem to have that problem. The only one I have which is reasonably legible (and in colour) is the 'Meet The Jazztet.' Ah well - they were cheap.. I remember that series. Those covers were scary. I immediately thought they were bootlegs, and was amazed there were legit LPs inside. I think I had Benny Golson's "Free." Thanks!

Does anyone have a cover shot of the Art Farmer album on Argo, "Perception"? It's one of the sessions included in the Mosaic box. Thanks in advance.

It's so funny...so my Billie order still shows as to be shipped by Amazon, even though it clearly states "this item has been discontinued by the manufacturer." So I went to cancel it. However, since I ordered it with something else, and together I got free shipping, and I already got the other item, Amazon won't let me cancel this order. They say I need to contact customer service. But then it says that it will ship October 13, so stay tuned.
-
Don't know what's up with that--my preorder is still pending, and shows a shipping estimate of October 13th. Could be that the product listing is in error, and that the set will be available through Amazon US but has been delayed. Or, it could be that it will NEVER be available through Amazon US. In any event, I just ordered one from Amazon UK for roughly the same delivered price as offered by Amazon US, and the UK site has them IN STOCK. EDIT: About 40 minutes later, and the Amazon UK order is already designated as "shipping soon." What did they charge you for shipping?
-
It's very strange. I see where they say the item was discontinued by the manufacturer, but they haven't cancelled my order yet.

Capital (EMI) I think.IIRC they discovered they had an old contract with Hendrix for one record and he gave them this to fulfill it. Was it the last record released in his lifetime? Re contract: correct. He signed it when he backed Lonnie Youngblood. Re last record: also correct.

What a hoot! Thanks for posting. I loved it, of course. Hava Negeilah is nothing but a folk song, and Bob's pretty familiar with that genre. He recorded a pretty funny version of it on 4/25/62; it's available on his first Bootleg Series box. Anyway, if you want to hear him play out of tune harmonica, listen to his accompanying Nancy Griffith on "Boots of Spanish Leather" from "Other Voices, Other Rooms." On another one of these Lubavitch telethons, they played a taped performance of Bob with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, doing a song I've never heard otherwise. I think its name was "Thank God." I used to have it on a Betamax tape. It was actually a very nice song. I still remember the refrain; it was something like "You can ask him for favors, he'll meet you at the door, but be sure to count your blessings before you ask for more." I'd love to hear it again.

I voted no. I think most censorship is repugnant. I like personality, and listening to jazz is all about life and personality. Where I'd draw the line is common decency: lauding Oscar Peterson's demise, for example.

David Letterman Confession: I Had Sex
mjzee replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm not sure too many people actually consider this a "scandal" - aside from the conservatives who are bitter over Letterman's anti-Palin (and pro-Obama) stance during the elections. The only "crime" on Dave's part is possibly opening himself and his company up to sexual harassment suits do to his workplace dalliances. His wife, of course, may or may not choose to hit him upside the head for it. Actually, in most of the accounts I've read, the media has been contrasting Letterman's incessant needling of Bill Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair.
