I recently bought Fearless Leader from bargainentertainment. It was delivered this week with no problem. Maybe your local post office was in a bad mood. Did you tip the carrier last year?
-
This has to be the most absurd price I've ever seen: $1.37, plus $2.98 shipping, for a new copy: Monk/Coltrane Riverside

And again... for the third time... IT'S A GIRL!!!
mjzee replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Awwwwwwww... Congrats! -
I don't see it on the Ikea website. Do you know if it's a current item?

So the day after "release date," Amazon emailed me that there would be a delay, and what would I like to do? Translation: you ain't gonna get it, OK to cancel. So I did.

For those who are in the area and are interested, there will be a free show by John Abercrombie, Gary Versace and Adam Nussbaum at the Greenwich Library's Cole Auditorium on Sunday, 10/25. Not sure of the exact time, but think it's at 3:30 PM. I'm looking forward to it.

Ditto. The print quality on that one would make a home-made Sun Ra Saturn LP look like something from Music Matters. All of those 70s Argo reissues by Cadet seem to have that problem. The only one I have which is reasonably legible (and in colour) is the 'Meet The Jazztet.' Ah well - they were cheap.. I remember that series. Those covers were scary. I immediately thought they were bootlegs, and was amazed there were legit LPs inside. I think I had Benny Golson's "Free." Thanks!

Does anyone have a cover shot of the Art Farmer album on Argo, "Perception"? It's one of the sessions included in the Mosaic box. Thanks in advance.

It's so funny...so my Billie order still shows as to be shipped by Amazon, even though it clearly states "this item has been discontinued by the manufacturer." So I went to cancel it. However, since I ordered it with something else, and together I got free shipping, and I already got the other item, Amazon won't let me cancel this order. They say I need to contact customer service. But then it says that it will ship October 13, so stay tuned.
-
Don't know what's up with that--my preorder is still pending, and shows a shipping estimate of October 13th. Could be that the product listing is in error, and that the set will be available through Amazon US but has been delayed. Or, it could be that it will NEVER be available through Amazon US. In any event, I just ordered one from Amazon UK for roughly the same delivered price as offered by Amazon US, and the UK site has them IN STOCK. EDIT: About 40 minutes later, and the Amazon UK order is already designated as "shipping soon." What did they charge you for shipping?
-
It's very strange. I see where they say the item was discontinued by the manufacturer, but they haven't cancelled my order yet.

Capital (EMI) I think.IIRC they discovered they had an old contract with Hendrix for one record and he gave them this to fulfill it. Was it the last record released in his lifetime? Re contract: correct. He signed it when he backed Lonnie Youngblood. Re last record: also correct.

What a hoot! Thanks for posting. I loved it, of course. Hava Negeilah is nothing but a folk song, and Bob's pretty familiar with that genre. He recorded a pretty funny version of it on 4/25/62; it's available on his first Bootleg Series box. Anyway, if you want to hear him play out of tune harmonica, listen to his accompanying Nancy Griffith on "Boots of Spanish Leather" from "Other Voices, Other Rooms." On another one of these Lubavitch telethons, they played a taped performance of Bob with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, doing a song I've never heard otherwise. I think its name was "Thank God." I used to have it on a Betamax tape. It was actually a very nice song. I still remember the refrain; it was something like "You can ask him for favors, he'll meet you at the door, but be sure to count your blessings before you ask for more." I'd love to hear it again.

I voted no. I think most censorship is repugnant. I like personality, and listening to jazz is all about life and personality. Where I'd draw the line is common decency: lauding Oscar Peterson's demise, for example.

David Letterman Confession: I Had Sex
mjzee replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm not sure too many people actually consider this a "scandal" - aside from the conservatives who are bitter over Letterman's anti-Palin (and pro-Obama) stance during the elections. The only "crime" on Dave's part is possibly opening himself and his company up to sexual harassment suits do to his workplace dalliances. His wife, of course, may or may not choose to hit him upside the head for it. Actually, in most of the accounts I've read, the media has been contrasting Letterman's incessant needling of Bill Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair. -
David Letterman Confession: I Had Sex
mjzee replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
See, I think there's something else going on. Because it's as many here have pointed out: if none of the participants were married, and they were boinking each other, why would this be considered a scandal? I therefore wonder what else was in the material that was used for extortion. I would imagine it would point to some more serious problems. As to what those may be, I have no idea, but at least the extortionist thought they'd be worth $2 million. -
ECM Book Horizons Touched - The Music Of ECM 19.90 €
mjzee replied to save0904's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Interestingly, Amazon just recommended to me this upcoming release: Windfall Light: The Visual Language of ECM Product Description Following the success of "Sleeves of Desire", a second publication is now being devoted to the cover art of the label ECM, Edition of Contemporary Music, focusing above all on sleeve design from 1996 to the present. Since its founding in 1969, ECM has been dedicated primarily to jazz and contemporary classical music and is a leading international label in both these fields. ECM has also received acclaim for its unique cover designs, which have always been an integral part of its productions. Over the years, the collaboration between Manfred Eicher, the label’s founder and producer, and designers including Barbara Wojirsch, Dieter Rehm and Sascha Kleis has produced an aesthetic of the cover that initiates a dialogue between the photographic image and the music. The search for a cover motif from a storehouse of possible images is presented in a few examples that shed light on how these visual worlds are created and trace their significance for the music. An illustrated catalog of all of ECM’s releases completes this publication. -
Any opinions on his Impulse and Atlantic dates?

These days one can buy a boxed set on an exploratory basis, and if you don't like it, voila!, boy are you overrepresented on that artist. I'm slogging through the Miles box "Seven Steps." While I love a lot of Miles, I find I intensely dislike this music - it seems an immense waste of time. So that's what, 6, 7 albums in that one box alone? And I haven't even started the Quintet box yet. Joe Henderson's another one: if I don't like his tone or his approach, why did I buy the Milestone box? (Other than, it was such a bargain...). I barely made it through half of that one. In my eMusic fixation, especially with the "crack packs," I loaded up on a lot of artists. It was a great opportunity (I have 30 Art Pepper albums, and love every one of them). But Joe Pass...boy, he begins to sound the same after awhile. 26 albums is waaaaay too many. (To be fair, almost all of these are Pablos...he probably had more fire earlier on.) Even Tatum. The Pablo Solo Masterpieces box is probably about 4 discs too many. But that's the great thing about jazz. I can own this stuff for years, and one day, that artist will really hit me.

Could that be because the compilation used tracks in the public domain?

I have been listening to jazz for a long time, and I have to say that the MJQ have still not won me over. Being a Bags fan, I can only rejoice in the fact that Bags made so many fine recordings outside of the John Lewis chamber jazz context. I agree. The MJQ is like Milt Jackson without the mojo. I think the source of the problem was John Lewis - he tried to tamp down or make "genteel" the groove that Milt tried to start.

Does anyone recall this science fiction story?
mjzee replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Do you remember where you read this story - was it from a book or a magazine? If it was a book, it might have been from something like "An Anthology of Classic Science Fiction," which might give you a lead on where to look further. -
I think all 5 could fit on one 2-CD set. Yes, Bud was a monster. Such an innovative mind, the quality of his ideas! I think if he played sax instead of piano, he'd be more recognized. Here's some of my favorite Bud (I have the U.S. release, not the Japanese): Interestingly, in researching this response, I came across this, courtesy of the Andorrans: Contains "Strictly Powell" and "Swingin' With Bud."
