  1. That's the one! I had it with the yellow cover (but without "Special Price Series" banner): A really nice collection of ephemera. Thanks for locating that! "Joy Of A Toy" is one of my favorite albums.
  2. I had these two songs on some sampler LP from the early '70's, probably British...now racking my brains but don't remember the name. I wouldn't forget Feelin' Reelin' Squealin'...especially in Kevin Ayers's voice.
  3. Reinhard Goebel Complete Archiv box, disc 13.
  4. Kurt Masur - The Complete Warner Classics Edition, disc 28.
  5. The Decca Sound - The Piano Edition, disc 38. Also includes: HutchFan, I notice you recently played a version by Martinon from the '70's. This version with Moura Lympany is from 1951.
  6. I had other samplers too from that era. Some that come to mind (other than the Warner Reprise greats): Zig-Zag Festival, on Mercury: The A&M Bootleg Album: The ESP Sampler: Columbia had a 7" series called PlayBack:
  7. I had that Different Strokes too! I think it was a buck. That was a great time for samplers. And yes, $2.99 for SM3. My favorites from them were the live disc of SM6 and all of SM7. It's a shame that Mike Ratledge lost interest in the music industry; he had a nasty organ tone (and I mean that in a good way).
  8. As did I. Woolworth’s, no more than $1.99 each. I had the cover (was that 1 or 2?) with the wheel that turned. The music seemed scattered and didn’t really impress me, but I could see where SM3 came from.
  9. Reinhard Goebel Complete Archiv box, disc 12. I have these on this:
  10. Kurt Masur - The Complete Warner Classics Edition, disc 27.
  11. Amazing! Thanks! Cole is so melodic on piano.
  12. The Decca Sound - The Piano Edition, disc 37.
  13. Interesting that there's a jazz connection: "And in 1985, he married Marie Musso, daughter of jazz saxophonist Vido Musso." (Also a Chicago connection.)
  14. My guess is that Dexter Gordon was a fan. Dexter did "Lady Iris B," which first appeared on Bailey's "Two Feet In The Gutter," and "A Flick Of A Trick," which first appeared on Bailey's "Reaching Out."
  15. Yes, R.I.P. I've enjoyed every session he's on that I've heard.
  16. Reinhard Goebel Complete Archiv box, disc 11.
  17. Thanks. I've been eyeing the Ormandy mono box for some time. I don't know if I need yet more versions of these symphonies, but it's gotten very good reviews, and will soon be unavailable. Kurt Masur - The Complete Warner Classics Edition, disc 26.
  18. It’s possible Mosaic pays the licensor per disc. It’s even possible the licensor presses their discs and ships them to Mosaic.
  19. What's your opinion of Ormandy (in general)? The Decca Sound - The Piano Edition, disc 36. Also includes Thirty-two Variations from this:
  20. There's an interesting tension between the booklet (where the sessions are listed in chronological order) and the discs (which are separated by licensing source: Savoy, Timme Rosenkrantz archive, other labels). After I listen to the whole box (I just finished disc 2), I'm thinking of rearranging the discs to conform to strict chronological order, just to see if that gives a more satisfying or illuminating listen.

    Coryell

I saw Coryell twice. He and The Eleventh House opened for Captain Beefheart at Town Hall, NYC, 10/28/72. A smoking show. It was really a great band; Mandel and Marcus were particularly impressive. The most perfect part of this show: no vocals! So it was The Real Great Escape material without vocals - very enjoyable. I recorded this from the seats with my little cassette recorder, and have enjoyed listening to it through the years. This band also did a radio concert on WLIR-FM (Long Island) 5/1/73. Also very enjoyable, but, alas, there were vocals. He did a solo concert at SUNY-Binghamton in, IIRC, spring 1975. Not so enjoyable. Like Jim said, it wasn't focused; it seemed like he played to the whoops of the crowd. I remember at one point he played slide guitar using a Coke can.
  22. Just keep in mind there are two concurrent timelines in the book - the sessionography is kept separate. I found myself going back and forth between the first half of the book and the second. But there is a lot of depth. Enjoy!
