  1. Deutsche Grammophon 111 - The Violin, disc 41.
  2. This is being re-released on vinyl September 15. https://www.amazon.com/Blackstone-Legacy-Jazz-Dispensary-Shelf/dp/B0CB8Q6RRH/ref=sr_1_3?qid=1690057560&refinements=p_n_date%3A1249114011&rnid=1249111011&s=music&sr=1-3 The post-bop opus Blackstone Legacy is the seminal debut album by trumpeter Woody Shaw. Originally released in 1971 on Contemporary Records, the groundbreaking album was inspired by the sociopolitical ills of the '60s. In their review, Allmusic called the album, "...a landmark recording, and a pivot point in the history of post-modern music". This 2-LP reissue was remastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, housed in a gatefold tip-on jacket.
  3. I'll give this a spin in honor of Mr. Johnson's birthday. Gotta keep that groove going!
  4. Glad to hear, and thanks for your devotion to this site, but as for all the hassles… Have you considered ionos (formerly 1and1)?

  6. The Decca Sound - The Piano Edition, disc 2. Also includes the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3 from this: Thanks for your concern.
  7. Decca - The Mono Years, disc 29. Also includes:
  8. Deutsche Grammophon 111 - The Violin, disc 40.
  9. Very nice. What time signature is it in?
  10. I remember these too, and really enjoying them. I wonder who was in the band?
  11. The Decca Sound - The Piano Edition, disc 1. Also includes:
  12. OK, then answer me this: Which are the 3 worst Ornette albums and why? He released 26 leader albums per Wikipedia. Which are his 3 worst, and what are the qualities that makes them worse than, say, his 3 best?
  13. Of course an over-simplification, but a rhetorical means to make what I think is a valid point.
  14. One thing, imho, that's problematic about free jazz is that there's no notion of "better" and "worse." It seems that everyone who plays free jazz is a "genius," which of course means that no one is. I haven't seen critiques that say this piece of free jazz is better than that one, and why, or that this solo is better than that solo and why, or that this musician seems more inspired on this session than at that one and why. There is no real analysis applied; implied is that any stretch of noisy music must be respected. There is no hierarchy. I can easily say that Ben Webster was better than, say, Stanley Turrentine, but that Turrentine was nonetheless very enjoyable to listen to.
  15. I had the Japanese vinyl "Cool Struttin' Vol. 2." It works very well as an album. Since vinyl is so hot, it's very possible that Blue Note is reserving for themselves the right to reissue these albums on vinyl.
  16. I generally agree with this, but I'd extend the criticism to Ornette; never understood the cult adulation of the guy. While listening to free jazz can be liberating, it's really (in my opinion) just a tonic to jazz based on more melodic forms, such as the great American songbook; it doesn't have much value on its own. My sense, too, is that musicians playing free jazz just assume the music is great - they don't take the time to "sell" the music to potential listeners, to explain what they're doing and showcase enjoyable moments. An example: Someone on this board used to post lists of the best albums of the past year. I decided to try two albums released in 2014: Anna Webber's "Simple" and Steve Lehman's "Mise en Abîme." Neither made much of an impression on me; just sounded like more free jazz, almost like slices of salami off a larger loaf. A similar critique can be made about most ECM releases. Just my opinion; I know others here disagree.
  17. I wonder why this wasn't included in Sony's Leonard Rose box.
  18. Decca - The Mono Years, disc 28. Also includes:
  19. I've been on Facebook for more than a decade - it's been a great way to keep up with family and friends. I've lately seen a lot less usage and engagement - it seems tired. I've been reading Twitter a lot more; since Elon bought it, it seems fresher and more pertinent. Most of these online forums are a huge time suck, so I try to limit my time there (both individually and collectively).
  20. Deutsche Grammophon 111 - The Violin, disc 39.
  21. John, I'm interested in the following, but I need prices on the last two: Stowell ,John – Golden Delicious cutout, splitting at bottom $2 King Crimson – Red 1969 Warner-Reprise Record Show (2 LP)
  22. Disc 1 (Johann Ludwig Bach - Trauermusik).
