No, I'll have to search that out. Deutsche Grammophon 111 - The Violin, disc 34. -
Thanks for sharing that. I do think Fahey was a "rainmaker" - he started things, he made things happen. I didn't know Winston recorded for Tacoma. I didn't know John Abercrombie recorded for Wyndham Hill. I've never heard of John Creger.

£15 or £30 per disc wouldn't make sense for a "Closing Down Sale." Presumably, he wants to move the merchandise quickly, so as not to get stuck with it. But it could definitely be written more clearly.

It’s unclear to me whether the prices listed are per CD or per 4-CD bundle.

She had a beautiful voice. I have pieces sung by her on the following Bach Guild (Vanguard) releases: Big Beethoven Box, Big Baroque Box Volume 4, Big Schubert Box, Big Haydn Box, and Big Jewish Music Box. -

There's a review of this set in the new WSJ.

What impressed me about the track is that (imho) the overall impression is "out", yet they achieve this strictly within "in" forms. The band had to be very well rehearsed.

Interesting selection. 1) Beginning reminds me of Otis's "Try A Little Tenderness." Tuba, trombone, tenor, alto, drums. Fun arrangement. No idea who it is (the tuba-alto combo made me think of Arthur Blythe, but it doesn't sound like him). I like the track. Band is very tight. Tune has a Caribbean air. 2) I thought it was going to be "I'll Remember April", but no. Well-played but didn't do much for me. 3) Nice ensemble work. Is this Tim Berne? 4) Jimmy Heath? Wayne Shorter? Sure sounds like Blakey & The Jazz Messengers (with a less-aggressive drummer), but I can't place the cut. 5) Steve Lacy, with his French quartet? Not my cup of tea. Thankfully, no Irene Aebi. I like the tenor's chops and sound. 6) Is that Joe Henderson? Relaxed swing, with some knotty lines in the tenor solo. Pianist starts subdued, but then revs up; sounds a little like McCoy Tyner. 7) Reminiscent of Ornette and Don Cherry. Definitely Ed Blackwell. Old & New Dreams? 8. Was hoping the distant sound quality would be a tip, but no. Guessing David Murray on bass clarinet. Lively. Dunno who it is. 9) Augustus Pablo, king of dub ocarina! I'll be curious as to the identity of #1.

Release date August 11: Inspired by his late mentors Everette DeVan, Seleno Clarke, and the incomparable Dr. Lonnie Smith, Chris Hazelton's new album invokes the feeling of what jazz organ has always traditionally been: late night music. The album finds him in a focused, subtle setting with a quintet of Kansas City's finest. The selections tell the story of a night out and the enchantment of what can happen after dark! Release date September 8: Fifteen years later, but well worth the wait, Joel Haynes is back with his third album 'The Return' on Cellar Music. The Toronto-based drummer laid down the album in Vancouver with an all-star band including Seamus Blake on saxophone, Neil Swainson on bass, and Tilden Webb on piano. Fine original compositions are juxtaposed by some killer covers including 'Tomorrow Never Knows' by The Beatles. Effervescent pianist Miki Yamanaka and her band bring their unique sound to the fore on their new album 'Shades Of Rainbow'. Recorded in Vancouver, during a memorable tour, the stellar New York based trio of Yamanaka, Tyrone Allen and Jimmy Macbride are fortified by the beautiful and unique saxophone playing of Mark Turner. Yamanaka's eight original compositions showcase her talent, wit and feel.

Release date July 21: Guitarist Joel Harrison's 25th CD, Anthem of Unity, brings together a once-in-a-lifetime ensemble that showcases his most pointed and focused work as a jazz musician yet. The team of Gary Versace, with his virtuosic and soul-drenched B-3 organ, Greg Tardy, one of our finest jazz woodwind players, and the legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette, exhibits extraordinary musicianship in a program of six Harrison originals, Sonny Rollins' "Doxy," and Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'." Tardy shows the range of his considerable abilities here, developing interesting ideas and phrases throughout his many solos. Versace has been about everywhere at this point, with giants such as Maria Schneider, the late John Abercrombie, Kurt Elling, Al Foster, and he anchors the bottom end on the Hammond as DeJohnette continually ignites the band. This is a blowing session, at times tender and at times volcanic, whose interplay and organic, visceral power is palpable from the first to last tune.

Reissue release date August 11: Considered one of Nathan Davis’ best albums, and long a collector’s item, The Hip Walk was recorded in 1965, a time when the Afro-American Davis lived in Europe, working with such legends as Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Ray Charles, Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphy and Woody Shaw. Nathan’s Kansas City school mate, trumpeter Carmell Jones – who e.g. worked with Horace Silver, Paul Kuhn, Eugen Cicero - comes along for the ride. A superb album of soulful, swinging jazz – the perfect companion when you feel the need to get in the groove. The album was remastered from the original analogue master tapes by Christoph Stickel (cs mastering) with the vinyl getting an AAA treatment. The original artwork is complimented by a supplement with additional liner notes, pictures, and a scan of the original master tape box. Until now, to get your hand on this early Davis LP you had to be lucky to purchase an expensive original pressing. Finally, it’s available again for everyone to enjoy! The album is featuring Jimmy Woode (bass), Kenny Clarke (drums) and Francy Boland (Piano).
