What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

Let's not forget the James P. Johnson Mosaic, which included sessions by Lavinia Turner, Sadie Jackson, Bessie Smith, Rosa Henderson, Martha Copeland, Ethel Waters, Clara Smith, Eva Taylor, Ruby Smith, and Ida Cox.

I remember seeing Dexter Gordon at the Village Vanguard around 1980 or 1981. I became acquainted with a guy who worked at the Vanguard, and he got me a seat by the right of the stage, with no one obstructing my sight view. Dexter was on that night, and he had this mesmerizing presence so that you couldn't take your eyes off him. I clearly remember the sweat beading on his forehead and face. At the end of the set, he bowed towards the audience, holding his sax horizontally, bell facing the crowd. What a night. There was also a night at the Vanguard in the late '90's, Jackie McLean with the Cedar Walton trio. While waiting for the set to begin, I needed to go pee. A waiter told me the bathroom was through the (unused) kitchen. I walked in there to find Jackie warming up. I interrupted him and said "Mr. McLean, there's something I always wanted to ask you." He looked at me and said "What?" I said, "Where's the bathroom?" He laughed and pointed the way.

The Lost Recordings - 1963 Berlin / Dexter Gordon - Donald Byrd
mjzee replied to Dan Gould's topic in New Releases
If they were both signed to Blue Note at the time, wouldn't this record label still have to get permission from Blue Note to release it now? Or does the "50-year rule" negate that now? -

Decca - The Mono Years, disc 11. Also contains: -
While licensing issues can be difficult, they may not be insurmountable. Look at their James P. Johnson set - licensed from many different labels and rights owners.

The Paul Desmond box is back in stock
mjzee replied to mjzee's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's my guess. -
I'd jump on it. This set recently became unavailable. However after moving warehouses we had a substantial number of components for this set and reached out to the licensors. We were able to negotiate a final pressing of this set even though the time limit had expired. This will be the final pressing of the set. Normally our limited edition is 5,000 copies and this final pressing will be 3,500 copies.

While I disagree with the initial premise of this thread - that Mosaic should release boxes of women artists precisely and mostly because they are women - they can do an interesting ju-jitsu with a Mary Lou Williams box. She's obviously a deserving artist for the Mosaic treatment for her place in jazz history and for her musical excellence. But if they released a Williams box, it would be covered with reverence by The New York Times and other outlets because she's a woman, giving it far more attention than it would have garnered otherwise. It would easily be nominated for a Grammy, and might even sell out. I'd buy it, especially if accompanied by a well-researched booklet.

I have this on the Oistrakh EMI (now Warner) box. Now listening to: Perlman DG box, disc 10. -
About three years ago, Amazon offered the complete Gordon Lightfoot on Reprise in mp3 format for $7.99. I snapped it up. It was a joy listening to it all. This song was an instant ear worm: R.I.P.

Wow - great responses for the first day! I was caught up short by this description, but the more I think about it...yes, one of the old tenor masters. Correct! Believe it or not, the tune is not called Misterioso and Monk is not given writer's credit. I'd ask for a paternity test. Not Kenny. You are correct about Bobby Hutcherson! Incorrect about everything else. Nope, nope. There is a bass player (a very good one, too), but not Scott or McDuff. Not Booker. Not Rufus. Not J.J. Neither is Red. Correct! All the rest (7-16) are no's.

I second this. -
Giant Box is prime eclecticism. The 7 tracks sound like they're from 7 different albums. Creed Taylor deserves some props - I don't know that another record label would have funded an arranger's inner muse in such a way. CTI seemed to have "calmed down" a bit after Sebesky left, and became more predictable and formulaic. RIP.

Deutsche Grammophon 111 - The Violin, disc 21. The disc pictured above is not exactly what appears in the box (although the picture does). Apparently, Menuhin and Kempff recorded much material during this session, and DG originally released it in different configurations. They probably didn't want to include the Kreutzer here, as it already appears twice in the box, played by Gidon Kremer/Martha Argerich and by Georg Kulenkampff/Wilhelm Kempff (but in 1935! The pictured session is from 1971). So the disc in the box contains Violin Sonatas Op. 30 Nos. 1-3. -

Gatefold LP covers with Insert on Inside of Gatefold
mjzee replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Unipaks! If it makes you feel any better, TTK, they were hated when they first came out, too, and didn't last long in the marketplace. An additional problem: the covers frayed badly at the crease, and since that spine held the album name, you saw these frayed spines when you filed the LP. -
Transferring music files (Windows Media Player) to Apple Music
mjzee replied to Milestones's topic in Audio Talk
The reason I recommended he start with one album is this: iTunes (aka Music) will copy the files and place them in a folder of its own choosing. This location can be seen by going to Music/Settings.../Files, and see what is listed under "Music Media folder location." My assumption is that Milestones has a large music collection (he belongs to the Organissimo boards, right?). If he transfers all his music to his computer's hard drive, he'll probably fill it up. If he changes the location to the EHD where he currently houses his collection, because iTunes copies the music, creating a second copy of each file, he'll fill up that EHD. The best solution would be: if his EHD has space to duplicate his entire collection, then he should change the "Music Media folder location" to that EHD. If his EHD cannot hold an entire duplicate of his collection, his best bet is to purchase a second EHD and change the location to that EHD. -
May is here, and May's BFT is too! 16 tracks, 75 minutes total, sure to stump and please. Performers should be familiar to dedicated Organissimites, but perhaps not some of the tracks. I hope you enjoy. Have at it! https://thomkeith.net/index.php/blindfold-tests/ (randyhersom's spoiler space, reproduced under license, follows:) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
