  1. Release date November 4: Underrated pianist Kirk Lightsey steps into the spotlight to lead an extraordinary quartet featuring Mark Whitfield - guitar, Santi DeBriano - bass and Victor Lewis - drums, through a spirited program of tunes from Dave Brubeck to Tony Williams and McCoy Tyner. Recorded live at New York's venerable Smalls Jazz Club this record is part of the Smalls LIVING MASTERS SERIES.
  2. Release date November 18: This 1978 live recording features pianist/vocalist/composer Mose Allison playing his usual repertoire in a trio with bassist Tom Rutley (bass) and drummer Jerry Granelli.(drums). Since Allison only recorded one album during 1973-81, this well recorded live set is quite valuable. Most of the material is fairly familiar, but the singer's spirited delivery and interplay with the audience make this recording rare. It ain't about technology, it's about these transcendent versions of Allison classics performing with sidemen who get it, for people who dig it, the real deal. Highlights include Wildman on the Loose, Swinging Machine, I Live the Life I Love, I Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues and Your Mind Is on Vacation. Recorded Live March 26, 1978 at the Showboat Lounge, Silver Springs MD
  3. Release date September 30: After receiving four Grammy nominations for his highly successful series of recordings that "latinize" the music of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Horace Silver, Conrad Herwig turns his attention to the legendary Charles Mingus. An imposing figure in jazz, Mingus was known for being complicated, volatile and a touched-by-genius innovator. As an homage to this influential artist, Conrad Herwig provides a fiery excursion into the world of Afro-Caribbean rhythms skillfully applied to Mingus' wildly imaginative compositions. Joining Herwig is special guest trumpeter Randy Brecker together with long-time "Latin Side" band colleagues pianist Bill O'Connell, reedman Craig Handy and the trumpet/flugelhorn of Alex Sipiagin with the rhythm section of Luques Curtis, Robby Ameen and Camilo Molina. Collectively they bring a vibrant spirit and authority to this repertoire which is unique among today's salsa ensembles. Featured tunes run the gamut from the thoughtful and intimate "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love" to the unbridled joy of "Boogie Stop Shuffle" with the somewhat lop-sided introduction to the opening track, "Gunslinging Bird," being the perfect harbinger of things to come. This latest installment in Conrad Herwig's "Latin Side" series pays tribute to the work of Charles Mingus with progressive arrangements, propulsive rhythms, exciting solos and the consummate musicianship of the leader and his bandmates.
  4. Release date November 11: Louis Armstrong had one of the longest recording careers of any artist of the 20th Century. Whilst parts of his career are well represented digitally, his singles from the mid-1950s to the early ‘60s are often overlooked, mainly because they were issued by many different labels. The collection attempts to remedy this. It features sides from Capitol, Columbia, Dot, MGM, Pye, RCA, Roulette, Verve and more. Some on CD for the first time in their single edits with some previously unissued on CD stereo versions including the complete unedited single versions of Calypso and Now You Has Jazz from High Society and The Five Pennies Saints. Almost all recordings are extremely rare on CD and of course mastered to Jasmine’s usual high standards. A set to fill holes in many an Armstrong collection.
  5. Release date October 14: Release date November 4: Ruins and Remains, a suite for piano, string quartet and percussion, was composed by Wolfert Breferode in 2018, to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. There is a vulnerable but resilient quality to the music, as it hovers over its emotional terrain, with moods both bleak and guardedly hopeful. Highly sensitive playing by Brederode, percussionist Joost Lijbaart and the Matangi Quartet, distinguish a special album recorded in Bremen's Sendesaal and produced by Manfred Eicher.
  6. Release date October 7: With Sky Continuous, Downbeat Critics Poll Winner 2022 (Rising Star Alto Sax) Noah Preminger, presents his 3rd album as a leader for Criss Cross. Sky Continuous is an exceptionally compelling trio recital with bass virtuoso Kim Cass, who has performed on 10 of Preminger's 11 prior albums (including Criss Cross releases Genuinity and After Life) and drumset Bill Stewart, who had never before shared a bandstand with Preminger. The music, which includes eight Preminger originals, is logically structured but adventurous and open - ended. The Album was recorded November 9, 2021 at the Samurai Hotel Recording Studio in NY. Recording engineer Mike Marciano also did the editing, mixing and mastering at Systems Two in NY.
  7. I thought this was an interesting, provocative read: https://www.stereophile.com/content/quackery-gullibility-and-open-mindedness I had a recent experience that, in a small way, reinforced this. I upgraded my speaker cables to a more audiophile pair made in China: KK Cable brand k4B-2B bi-wire cables, bought from Amazon. They cost $70.98 for the pair. I hear a distinct improvement in clarity; the music just makes more sense now. I feel drawn into the music.
  8. My Freddie box arrived today. Great presentation, as usual. The front cover photo is very striking - he looks so young! Very cool suit too - look at those sleeve cuffs! I'm looking forward to listening to it. My box is 82/5000.

My guess is, the 5 tracks from July 1972 were considered too short for an album, so the track Mr. Jones was selected to fill it out. I looked at Cuscuna's BN discography; it doesn't show any extra material recorded at these sessions, but sessions of this era don't show alternate takes or rejected tracks.
  11. Me too. The aural evidence is out there. I think I've come out the other end - I've heard all (or most) of what there is in their music, so don't feel a huge need to sign up for upcoming Dave's Picks, but I do enjoy hearing what I have when it occurs under random play, and am often pleasantly surprised and delighted. They were a great band.

BTW, for those who don't want to pay Japanese prices, downloads of Elvin's entire Blue Note oeuvre are pretty inexpensive: Presto Music has mp3 (bit rate not specified) @ $25, and FLAC @ $32.25: https://www.prestomusic.com/jazz/products/8631372--the-capitol-vaults-jazz-series 7Digital has 320kbps mp3 @ $29.99, and FLAC @ $40.49: https://us.7digital.com/artist/elvin-jones/release/the-capitol-vaults-jazz-series-1373034 Note that both of these have all the material that was in the Elvin Mosaic.
  13. For those interested in such events (and also trying to defuse tempers here), this is coming up in November: https://www.meetupatthemovies.com/synopsis/?eml=2022September15/5822243/6131962&etsubid=25405212

Also, is the track "Mr. Jones" repeated (the same recording) on the albums Poly-Currents and Mr. Jones?
  15. Just received my copy of Jazz From Detroit. Nice that the cover photo is by Francis Wolff - it's a great shot, so full of movement.
  16. It was a wonderful reminiscence. I really liked the Paul McCartney anecdote, and the lesson derived. Mr. Lewis was a special person.

  18. It could be that someone from Mosaic monitors this board. At 1:07 PM, I received an updated email from Mosaic listing a shipping number.
  19. I saw one of his later films, Goodbye to Language (2014), in a theatre. I had no idea what was going on. I later read that he used two different actresses in the same role.
  20. I don't enjoy listening to OP, although perhaps it would be interesting to concentrate on his work as a sideman. But for all the talk about Jimmy Rowles, I haven't liked his work either as a leader or sideman. He's not propulsive, he doesn't offer insightful responses or settings for soloists, and I find listening to him to be an oblique, almost impenetrable experience. Again, different strokes.
  21. The Mosaic web site says my order is still processing.
  22. R.I.P. Hearing "The In Crowd" on WMCA-AM in 1965 or 1966 was one of my first exposures to jazz, an instrumental on AM radio, and an instrumental that was a hit! It still hits a groove that makes me smile.
  23. Thanks for the tip. Just ordered. No worries. A board member pointed me to "Lost And Found: Four Tops "Breaking Through" 1963-1964" on Motown.
  24. I think they're figuring out Marketing 101. Don't promise and, with constant delays, seem incompetent. Instead, assemble it confidentially and then offer immediate gratification. I'm also impressed they got this out in time for the Christmas gift season.
  25. I've always thought that Mingus 5x sounded distorted, as if the recording levels went into the red too often. Were they able to tame that on the recent release?
