  1. A powered speaker is a combined amp/speaker. So, to use your example, your CD player plugs into the powered speakers. There are volume controls on the speaker itself and on the speaker’s remote. The speakers come with an AC cord that plugs into the wall and provides power. if you look at the Amazon link I provided, or at the Klipsch graphic above, you’ll see all the connection points.
  2. Powered speakers have the amp inside the speakers; can't get more compact than that. See, for example: https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-S1000MKII-Audiophile-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B07ZVPMR58/ref=sr_1_8?crid=Z5PB6O8LDAJQ&dchild=1&keywords=edifier+speakers&qid=1634443871&sprefix=edifier%2Caps%2C198&sr=8-8 A DVD player will play a CD, but you'd still need an amp. But that DVD player and a pair of powered speakers would do you fine. BTW, if your DVD player has an optical out, using an optical audio cable with powered speakers would sound great.
  3. Since you're now part of the iPhone generation, you may want to consider a powered speaker (or pair of powered speakers) to connect to the iPhone. Edifier makes some good ones, but many others do too. Just search on Amazon for Edifier.
  4. It’s good. Also check out Forgotten Man on Timeless.
  5. I wonder if they'll ever use it on the earlier releases (Dick's Picks, Download Series, Road Trips, Europe 72 box). Probably not.
  6. The box arrived today. Handsome package.
  7. Correct!
  8. Sorry, but no to both. Zut alors!
  9. This is pretty funny if you listen to Ornette's "Theme From A Symphony" from "Dancing In Your Head." Now that's a clattering cacophony!
  10. I hope so too.
  11. Now they're saying Wednesday, October 13.
  12. Time for some hints: #2: The saxist is not the leader. #4: Chuck might know this one. #7 & #8: Both releases are on Pablo. #11: Wilbur Little on bass. #12: It's tough to be the boss. #13: The bari is not the leader. #14: The breakout star (at least for me) from my BFT last year. #15: The guitarist is not the leader.
  13. Allen, if you'd like something to pass the time, why not participate in my Blindfold Test this month? You might like it.
  14. You can get a connector dongle, called a "lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter." They're inexpensive.
  15. Looks good. I'm not familiar with some of the titles.
  16. It's in the Straight No Chaser documentary.
  17. Anyone have a good source for SteepleChase new releases? Amazon wants $26.99.
  18. Any ideas? https://www.dustygroove.com/item/996876?incl_cs=1&no_incl_in=1&sort_order=release_date
  19. New feature turns your AirPods Pro into a makeshift hearing aid for conversations
  20. Track #10 is indeed George Van Eps, doing "Tango El Bongo" from his album Mellow Guitar.
  21. What's weird is that nowhere does it say it's licensed from Universal.
  22. I got a shipping notice for the box set; should arrive on Sunday. I just checked dead.net; interesting that the box has not yet sold out.

    Frank Zappa

I don't remember which song that is, but was it sung by Ringo? IIRC, nothing about Ringo could be used for the soundtrack (per Apple). His voice doesn't appear in any dialogue, and, on the cover, his character has a mask over his face (but interestingly, his face appeared on the movie poster that came with the original soundtrack release on UA).
  24. One reason I like doing BFTs is it enables me to hear music I know through someone else's ears. Correct 2x! Fascinating. You are correct that the tenor isn't playing his main instrument. It was recorded in 1981. It is Sheila. It's a little like a lullaby, but has a harmonic richness I like. I find the piano affecting, too.
