  1. CD-Rs deteriotate over time, depending on the quality. But manufactured CDs don't, unless there is a manufacturing or storage problem. The first CDs have been sold in 1983 (I have a few from that year), and so far no widespread deterioration effect has been known. Those CDs that became unreadable were not manufactured correctly. There are probably collectors on this board who have many CDs that are more than 15 years old. Did you encounter a significant number that became unreadable? More than one? I'm pretty sure that our CDs will also last the next 10, 20 or even 50 years, if anyone still uses CDs then (their content will probably have been transferred to hard disk juke boxes)
  2. In french, the "tsh" sound at the beginning of a word doesn't exist. Even the english names Charlie and Chet are usually pronounced with a soft "sh" by french speakers.
  3. It looks like the website is updated manually.
  4. This is one of my favourite Mosaic sets. It has a lot of variation and no unnecessary fillers. This is the perfect Mosaic set for Mosaic haters
  5. And like the Steve Hoffman forum These boards all use the same software and the default template. Customization is possible, but it takes some time and knowhow.
  6. "shatchkovitch"´s name is a nightmare from a record collector´s point of view. "Shostakovich" in English, "Schostakowitsch" in german and "chostakovich" in French (filed under C)
  7. Why wasn't "Evan" jazzy enough?
  8. This material has also been reissued in 1998 on SBM-remastered EMI CDs (tape transfer: Ron McMaster and Malcolm Addey). They probably got it from there. Definitive is rather good in locating the best source material, i.e. previous official remastered CDs.
  9. Yes, but be aware that the RVGs are the copycontrolled ones (you probably know that), and that many of the ZYX OJCs are sonically flawed
  10. I had problems yesterday in checking my order status (error 500 after logging in) The wishlist worked. It could have been a problem with their secure protocol (https:// pages)
  11. I have only one Silkheart album, and I like it alot: Charles Brackeen - Worshippers Come Nigh Charles Brackeen has a very individual tone, like a Jackie McLean on tenor. He has great sideman on this album: Olu Dara, Fred Hopkins, Andrew Cyrille.
  12. I thought the recent US pressings were all digipacks. I ordered the Paul Horn from cduniverse and it's a digipack. I prefer the mini-LPs a lot. I haven't yet seen the latest european batch.
  13. Here's another thread, with download links (they still work) "alternative" booklets to OJC box sets, upon popular request
  14. The sound is good (let's say 7/10), except that the entire CD1 is mono! The second session of the set that starts on CD1 and continues on CD2 is mono on he first CD and stereo on the second. So this must be a mastering or manufactoring error. No problem with the other CDs. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=7551
  15. From this sale, I only bought Chet Baker - Once upon a summertime, a 1977 quintet session on the Galaxy label. The sound on this "20Bit remastered" CD is merely acceptable, rather muddy. It's hardly thinkable this has been recorded like that in the studio. I don't have any other CD to compare it to though. Musically, it's a very good straughtforward session, with the unknown tenor sax player Gregory Herbert.
  16. Here's a picture of my Pepper set. The paper on top of the CDs is couw's booklet.
  17. The sets sound like the first CD reissues from Fantasy (1986-89): Lacking dynamics and frequency extension. Dull but rather clean. For non-audiophiles it will be acceptable, but the K2 CDs of the same recordings are much superior. The packaging consists of jewel cases containing 4 CDs each (probably like the US sets). Whereas the US sets are packaged in LP-size boxes with a LP-size color (?) booklet containing complete discographical info and notes (like Mosaic sets), in the ZYX sets the jewel cases are in a very tightly fitting carton sleeve (difficult to handle), and the b/w booklet is reduced to CD size (very small text) and missing much of the content (notes and original album listing) Luckily, John (couw) made some additional booklets with complete discographical info (session info and original album names) in MS Word, that can be printed and folded and fit the boxes. They are phenomenal. You can find the download location for the booklets with the board search function, as well as other discussions of these sets.
  18. Zweitausendeins had these Fantasy sets for years in the catalogue, for 5 Euro/CD (80 Euro for the Pepper set). That's a normal price, given the cheap packaging. Then they decided to sell out these sets. The price of less than 2 Euro/CD was exceptional, and they were gone very quickly. As far as I know, the remastering of the sets is identical to the US sets. I have the Pepper, Miles, Monk and Bill Evans Riverside sets and the sound is decent but dated. ZYX started their own (partly horrible) remastering only later. I find the official prices of the US sets is to be too high. They're almost as expensive as Mosaic sets, but their collector's value is much lower.
  19. It was available for years from Zweitausendeins, for 70 DM/35 Euro. Maybe some local 2001 stores still have it. I bought it early this year in Munich.
  20. Yes, it was me who bought it. That's very kind of you, Dmitry. I wasn't aware there was an OBI with this XRCD. <-- obi-smoker smilie
  21. With these "LP reproduction" CD, what comes closest to LP is the handling
  22. He was metrosexual too
  23. Thanks, Hans. That's one of the few ECM titles which has been reissued on CD in Japan only.
  24. I think my CD (european pressing) contains a folded paper with liner notes. I will check it later.
  25. Brownie, thanks for posting this article. There is already a thread about this new technology, linking to an article with sound samples: New method for old vinyl digitization, by Berkeley Labs
