His recent N-E-W-S album is very jazzy. I heard it on the radio without knowing what it was and was surprised to hear that it's a Prince album.

Pollini has recorded many sonatas for Deutsche Grammophon, but he has not yet completed the cycle. Pollini-Beethoven site by Deutsche Grammophon Check the "RELATED RELEASES" link for a complete listing.

That's also my impression of this album. It looks like Wynton forced himself to produce an absolute mainstream album for his new label. A jazz CD for everyone, the perfect risk-free gift for somebody whose music taste you don't know. Just as the Norah Jones album. The vocal track with Dianne Reeves "The Feeling of Jazz" is so full of clichés, as if meant as a jazz demonstration piece for people who have never heard this sort of music. I really prefer his latest Sony projects. Although pretentious, they weren't compromised to please the mainstream public.

Royalties go directly to the musicians. Copyrights go to the composers (if different from the musicians). Normally, something has to be paid to copyright collecting societies too (GEMA in Germany, SACEM in France), even if the musicians are also the composers.

Bruno, Customs tax is now harmonized within the EU. Basically, you pay your local VAT + 3-5% customs tax. If you have to pay more, it's probably some service fee that private delivery companies charge you for filling in the customs papers. I order from CDuniverse a lot, always 3-4CD worth ca $50 + $10 shipping. I had to pay customs tax in only 1/3 of the cases. Theoretically customs tax is due for every package worth more than 20 Euro. When you order from amazon.de, you will have to pay the price including your local VAT. This will be calculated on checkout. The displayed prices include the german VAT, which is 16%.

The recent "Ornette!" reissue (release date October 2003) which I bought at Zweitausendeins came in a regular transparent jewel case. http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000C24JW/

It IS a Definitive CD box (Definitive Records DRCD44409). Disconforme is the company behind Definitive Records. http://www.disconforme.com/pages2/definitive/defcat.asp This music has just entered the public domain in the EU, so obviously Definitive would reissue it.

The worst CD I bought in the last 5 years was a second hand copy of Gary Thomas' Overkill. I love his intense early JMT albums, but this is just a poor attempt at rap/funk fusion. It showed up in second hand bins significantly often.

K2s are not distributed by the european Fantasy license holder ZYX, they are very hard to find in Europe. So I guess sales in Europe are almost zero, especially since most of the K2 titles are also available in ZYX-style "20Bit"-remastering and sell much cheaper ($8-10)

BTW, the first version of Mahler's First symphony had 5 movements. A second movement "Blumine" (andante, ca 7 minutes long) was then eliminated by Mahler. It is the cheesiest and dullest pieces of music he has composed.

Sony Germany just got reprimanded by the competition authorities because of a mailing campaign, where letters with a US army-style envelope and stamp were send to households of registered Playstation owners. They contained a "bloodstained" piece of cloth with the inscription "We're in deep shit, get us out of here" (in german), no indication of the sender or further text. The "ad", which was hard to recognize as such, was for a Playstation war game due to come out. Some who received it thought it came from troups in Iraq http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/netzkultur/...,295576,00.html

Mahler 4 and 5 usually fit on one CD (not together, but individually). And occasionally 8, and even sometimes 9 does as well (though I think they have to really rush the tempos on 9 to get it on one disc). But your basic statement is true, that plenty of Mahler's symphonies are LONG!!! The only Mahler symphony that is always longer than 80 minutes (CD length) is the 3rd. The 2nd, 6th and 9th are also longer than 80 minutes in most interpretations, but there are recordings which fit onto one CD. In my view the first symphony is rather accessible as far as Mahler's works go. I especially like the haunting slow start of the first movement. Just yesterday I bought yet another version of this symphony, the 1964 Decca recording by Georg Solti (5 Euro bargain at Zweitausendeins). Mahler is the only classical composer of whom I have three and more versions of every work. Bernstein is my favorite Mahler conductor, the 9th my favourite symphony. For Mahler starters, the Telarc recordings by Benjamin Zander are a good option, they contain a free CD where the conduction explains his vision of the work. Zander has recorded the symphonies 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 until now. www.telarc.com

The pigeon movie is rather funny, although it would not have been necessary to demonstratively "kill" the pigeon.
