  1. More on the Brownie/Philology CDs here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=4981
  2. I´ve just discovered an ad on this new release on Jazz Corner. Contemporary "free jazz" artist can rarely be seen on DVD, so this already makes this disk remarkable. Ellery Eskelin, Andrea Parkins & Jim Black are one of my favourite groups from the last decade, their hatOLOGY CDs are among the best releases from this label. http://www.dtmgallery.com/Main/Newsletter-2004-04-09.html I only have some reservations about the possible technical quality of this DVD, as it was filmed by amateurs with a camcorder. I would hope this to be an enjoyable music DVD and not just a documentary for fans. Some stills can be seen here: On the road with ELLERY ESKELIN w/ Andrea Parkins & Jim Black
  3. Like the good old old non-graphical smilies :-)
  4. I don't know what tapes have been used for the latest Rhino CD reissues of the Ornette quartet sessions, but they are really up to audiophile standards. Much better than the first CD reissues. From the sonic point of view, it would be worth releasing new LP pressings made from these tapes.
  5. "Out there" has just been reissued on SACD, so there seems to be an audiophile market for Eric Dolphy albums. But it could also be a label question. Fantasy-owned albums are often reissued as audiophile CDs or LPs, but Atlantic sessions very rarely, even Coltrane albums which would surely sell.
  6. Hi Ray, Are these Past Perfect boxes? I think they are from Italy, maybe there are italian web stores who have them. I don't have a Zweitausendeins store here, I visit the one in Munich every few months when I have a meeting there. Good luck
  7. For the record, the pic that had to go from my signature: Mission accomplished! (Although that doesn't mean much anymore today ;-) )
  8. Here's a discussion on the same subject on another forum: LPs: Longest Recording Time
  9. Hi Deus, In fact I hate that Bardot picture myself. It's meant to influence the outcome of Evan's poll. I think pictures in signatures are generally distracting, although I find signatures useful as such and don't want to turn them off. r u offended? I would have removed the Bardot pic after that poll is over. So I voted yes in your poll
  10. I have this Naxos Jazz CD by the New York Jazz Collective and I agree with the AMG review. Nothing exceptional, but very well played and similar to the albums the same musicians individually released on Enja and other full price labels. I Don't Know This World Without Don Cherry Another great thing from Naxos are their historical classical releases. I like the Rachmaninov piano concertos recorded by the composer between 1934 and 1941. Those recordings were previously only available in much more expensive editions, although they are in the public domain.
  11. I just listened to this CD again, and I don't find it overly problematic. It's not a great recording, but the instruments generally sound full and natural. Only on the ensemble passages the trumpet section in the right channel sounds thin and slightly distorted. The biggest oddity is that the instruments are hard panned to the stereo channels (and the drums divided between both on some passages), with nothing in the middle except the narration, which sounds very dry, as if recorded in a radio announcer booth. I hear no buzzing in Jon Hendrix's voice. Art Farmer's solo sounds like a trumpet recorded in a big band section, with the microphone placed in front of the complete band. So it's a bit distant, but not really "like he is in the next room". So it's acceptable (even) for me

  13. Vote! Don't forget that this could set a precedent for other signatures
  14. French actors and politics: What about Coluche, comedy star and actor, (with Louis de Funès in "L'Aile ou la cuisse") presidential candidate http://www.wolton.cnrs.fr/hermes/b_29gb_resume.htm and founder in 1985 of Les Restos du coeur ("Restaurants of the heart"), an organisation that daily feeds thousands of homeless people in France.
  15. Seems that Delon is the french Charlton Heston
  16. This review says the LP set was mastered from analog sources: The Audiophile Collector: New Jazz & Rock Re-issues On Vinyl (positive-feedback.com)
  17. I also think the artistic and technical level of Naxos recordings as now similar to the "big" classical labels (in fact Naxos is now the biggest one, with the largest in-print repertoire). Many solo artists which have been dropped by the majors now record for Naxos, and some musicians and orchestras, like Jeno Jando, Idil Biret or Antoni Wit have become famous with their excellent Naxos recordings. The recording quality is less consistent, because Naxos often works with local engineers, whereas the majors have one team. But the majors now frequently record live concerts (which is much cheaper than studio productions), and their recording quality varies a lot too. The last dozen Naxos CDs I've bought all sounded very good. I think it's the early Naxos productions from the 90's that were more problematic in this respect. At only 5 Euro, Naxos CDs are risk-free purchases.
  18. I don't think she has ever been taken seriously in her political and animal protection actions. The Brigitte Bardot Foundation (listen to her welcome message, in English! ) Bardot fined for racist remarks (BBC, 16 June, 2000) Brigitte Bardot unleashes colourful diatribe against Muslims and modern France (AFP, May. 12, 2003) Bardot Slams China over Wildcat Cull ( January 9, 2004)
  19. These are not babe pics. It is a discography...
  20. Doesn't the Mingus Mosaic set use mono tapes, whereas the Candid CD reissues are stereo?
  21. For comparision with the individual CD releases, here is the tracklist of the Mosaic CD set. Maybe someone can add the title of track 1 from CD1.
