  2. You can log into the board from every computer that is connected to the internet. You only need to know the user name and password of your account. If you use a public computer or share a PC with co-workers or family members, be sure to log out at the end of the session (link on top left of the page next to your name), because somebody else could use your ID if the browser is still logged in. Another recommendation for forum junkies: If you are registered on many forums, use a different password for everyone, because an admin of one forum with access to the database can find out your password and could use it on the other boards. I'm not thinking about the Organissimo admins of course.
  3. I tried some google searches. With "jazz message board", "jazz forum" or "jazz discussion" (without quotes), Organissimo is not on the first page of the results. But with "jrvg tocj" it is the first result. That is rather extreme, because with other rare keywords often used here "andrew hill dance with death", "mccoy tyner mosaic" I was less successful. So people that find Organissimo through google probably searched for very specific information, and not for a jazz discussions in general.
  4. (...) he also bought a contraption that allows the ipod to play through a standard fm radio. you pick the signal on the ipod and then tune the radio to those numbers. presto. Every home stereo that has a line input can be used to connect a portable player. It doesn't necessarily need a line out on the portable device, the headphone jack is good as well (equalizer settings should be flat and the volume a bit less than maximum). Most amplifiers have RCA jacks for line input ("Aux", "Tape in" or "Tape play", anything except "phono" and "microphone"), then it need a simple jack-RCA adapter cable that can be found in every electronics store for $8. Only if a device has no line in (such as many car stereos) is it necessary to use more complicated connections like the FM transmission method.
  5. The termn "world music" was invented in the 80's to designate a new style based on traditional music from various continents. But already in the late 60's, the german jazz author Joachim Ernst Behrendt organized sessions between jazz artists and traditional musicians that would also qualify for this label. One session was called "Jazz meets the world".
  6. In jazz, the assertion that one has to be black in order to play the music in an authentic way is luckily a thing of the past. But in other fields of music it seem to be rooted in the marketing. Why are allmost all famous rappers black (Eminem being the big exception) and most boygroups white?
  7. Happy birthday, Jim
  8. I just discovered the first "rotten" CDs in my collection. A 3CD set from Hyperion Records, with Tatiana Nikolayeva playing Shostakovich´s 24 Preludes and Fugues op.87. This set from 1990 is "Made in England" and was problably made by the Nimbus pressing plant, which was known for it's manufacturing problems in the late 80's. http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/details/66441.asp On all 3 CDs from the set, the laser skips on the last third of the disc, with drop outs increasing progressively. No deterioration is visible. I will try to extract the CDs on my PC to save the tracks that are intact.
  9. The Antwerp concert is the best Miles live recording I have ever heard. Similar to the Plugged Nicke sets, but even faster and more abstract. The recording quality is acceptable (aircheck).
  10. Definitions: - "Classical" includes everything in the genre, from medieval to avant garde, and opera - "Pop/Rock" also includes popular music styles often listed seperately, like Rap or Country - "Folklore/World" means traditional music from other cultures and it's derivatives My vote goes to classical, which currently fills 30% of my listening time.
  11. Why is René McLean only 14 years younger than his father Jackie?
  12. It's freezing here. The coldest month of May I have ever experienced. Colder than April. 5°C in the morning today. I saw on TV that it was even snowing in the german Alps. Must be some kind of promotion for that "Day After Tomorrow" movie ...
  13. I still believe that many of Blue Note's decisions concerning their message board were based on ignorance and not bad faith. Remember how badly the BNBB was administered? During it's last year, there were constant technical problems, which were probably due to lack of maintainance. Tom Evered and the other moderators only showed up occasionally. After the board was closed, the "Bulletin board"-link remained on the homepage for more than a year. So I can imagine that when they posted links to other jazz message boards they chose AAJ and Jazz Corner because those boards were known to them. After all, Organissimo was at the beginning mainly known and promoted among BNBB regulars, and the Blue Note guys rarely read their own message board. And why didn't they simply link to the european Blue Note board after this was created? Another sign that they really don't care about it.
  14. I agree with all 4 albums, although I have the Basra JRVG (very good sound) and the True Blue "spanish TOCJ". These are two essential Blue Note albums which should never go OOP.
  15. I don't have a car, so I'm not an expert on this, but MP3-CD seems to become very popular with car stereos now. The advantage is that 8-12 albums fit on one CD-R (depending on compression rate), while MP3 sound quality is good enough for car listening. From my experience with portable MP3 players and DVD players with MP3 support, navigation on the disc is not much more complicated than with a normal CD.
  16. In some companies they make a difference between electronic equipment with and without lasers (CD drives). It also depends on the type of airplane. You will need to contact El Al if you want to know for sure. I searched their website and there is no precise indication on that. Some general information on interference: Electromagnetic Interference with Aircraft Systems: why worry? Interference from Electronic Devices
  17. I didn't know who Kaufman was, and checked his wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Kaufman
  18. I don't think this will have the same effect as a minute of silence in public gatherings. Why don't we create a thread about personal recollections on Elvin? Unfortunately I've never seen him in person, but I'm sure many other board members will have something to say.
  19. You are right Brandon, but generally the differences in CD remasterings (RVG vs TOCJ) are so much higher than the sonic difference between CD players that the latter is hardly relevant, as long as both players are of a good quality. An option is to do two A/B tests and switch the discs between the players for each test. More important is the possibility to compensate volume difference between players and discs, but most setups don't have that. It is very difficult to A/B two discs if the volume has to be adapted manually at every switch.
  20. Eric, Copyprotection issues have been discussed in a few other threads. Do a search on "copyprotected" or "datashield"
  21. In relation to public domain (more than 50 years old) music, the copyprotected Blue Note CDs must compete with non-copyprotected Definitive CDs. Copyprotection (and the related playability problems) make the original Blue Note CDs less attractive in comparision.
  22. They will only know that if they decide to sue somebody for infringing their rights on remastering work. Copyright is not something that is registered after examination (like a patent). There are general rules in copyright law on what can be protected and a lot of jurisprudence that sets out the details and gives examples, but as long as there are no rulings on copying of remasterings nobody knows if this is protectable. The article I posted above gives some examples, restored photographies that were denied copyright protection and colorized photos that were granted protection. Remastering of tapes rather similar to restoration of photographies, whereas colorization involves creative work which is added to the original work. Only RVG could claim protection for his remasterings, because in some cases they are highly creative and produce an end result which is very different from the original recording
  23. Ubu, On the www.freshsoundrecords.com website, Definitive CDs retail at 9 Euro (13.5 Euro for a 2CD set). Shipping cost seems reasonable. I haven't ordered from them yet.
  24. No surprise the $1000 omelette doesn't sell. It's more rational to order 10 budget omelettes, because for the same price you get the same amount of caviar but 10 times as much egg.
  25. They simply copy the music from the existing (OOP or not) CD. Definitive even chooses the best available remastering most of the time. That is unethical of course, but it is not illegal. Remastering and restoration work is generally not considered worthwile of copyright protection, or at least nobody seems to have tried to fight such copying in court. Such details are not written into copyright law but are left to jurisprudence. Check the chapter "COPYRIGHT IN REMASTERED SOUND RECORDINGS" in this article: Sound recordings and copyright
