  1. Since I visit jazz discussion boards (BNBB since 2001) I learned a lot about US politics and lifestyle, and a bit about jazz. For example the meaning of "TOCJ" and "OBI"
  2. ???? Link returns: "Invalid Thread specified" It seems that this AAJ thread has been deleted, I have just done a search and could not find it. It was the user "jazzcritic" writing (as far as I remember it) that he received a notification as a AMG contributor that AMG would only accept reviews for new CD releases (new recordings and reissues) and not older stuff. He also wrote that contributors are being paid according to a certain scheme and that AMG propably wants to limit payments that way.
  3. Have you compared the two CDs? I remember that slight shrillness too (I have heard the european pressing), but I think that's how the recording sounds.
  4. Could it be that your cat is male and that a female cat urinated onto your sandals?
  5. Has anyone received a Mosaic Select from CD Universe at the bargain price? The $37.5 price has disappeared and been replaced by $47 ("you save $21" )
  6. Many ESP albums have also been available on Emusic.com, but I don't know if they still are. Despite the download limit introduced a year ago, the Emusic subscription service is still much cheaper than iTunes.
  7. Well, that's true of many cities throughout the world. There must be a more specific reason about Paris. It could be just mouth propaganda and musicians not wanting to be alone in foreign city. Scandinavian countries were also very popular among american jazz artists in the 60's. England would have been a logical exile (because of the language and the active jazz scene), however I've read once that it was difficult for foreign musicians to work in the UK (except occasional concerts) because of the protectionist local musicians union.
  8. All Music Guide is restricting new reviews to 2004 releases (AAJ forum)
  9. A few weeks ago, while Zweitausendeins was offering the Verve Master Takes set for 36 Euro, I was considering it but concluded it was not worth that price (I already have some of the Verve albums). Now Amazon.de and JPC.de, the two biggest german online stores are selling it for 65 and 73 Euro respectively, which is more than $25 per CD.
  10. I have the same opinion as Pete. I have heard all of the Prestige albums (downloaded them from emusic.com) but none of them come close to the Blue Note sessions. I even prefer the sub-par "Tippin the scales" to the Prestige sessions. Jackie McLean's alto sound wasn't as individual then and the music much less adventurous.
  11. Couw , you must have a wrong print, mine looks like this:
  12. Amazon.de has most of these for 6.66 Euro currently. Diabolic!
  13. Congratulations, Deus. The most recent Opera version is 7.50. 7.xx is really rock stable and works with 99% of the websites I know. One site that causes problem is AllaboutJazz, which only works if "Identify as MSIE" is chosen in the Quick Preferences. As for the cookie problem, you should check the Privacy settings. Maybe the "delete new cookies when exiting" is activated. The other issue (formatting text) can unfortunately not be resolved, as far as I know this is a IE-only function that is not in conformity with web standards.
  14. How many cd's that represents ? In good quality MP3 format (192kbs), a 60 minute CD is compressed to ca 80MB size. So a 20GB drive holds up to 250 CDs. With typical 40 minute albums from the LP era or reduced bitrate it is more. 160kbs bitrate is still very close to CD quality, but at 128kbs (the typical bitrate for downloadable files) cymbals tend to sound crappy, even with cheapo earbuds.
  15. A few studio master takes are missing, which seems to be an error in the concept. Also missing are the JATP concerts.
  16. Yes. I use it on four computers The email address does not matter. You use the email address once to register in the forum, and then it is only needed for special optional notifications or when you forgot your password and want to retrieve it again. BTW: An email address is not related to a specific PC. You can have many email accounts and use them on many PCs, you just need to configure the email program on the PCs to access the relevant email server.
  17. It would be a much better start to get the Savoy and Dial recordings (1945-47). These are Bird's best sessions. They are available in various formats. 4CDs each for the complete Savoy and Dial sessions including alternate takes, or 2CDs each for the master takes only.
  18. It's an essential Cecil Taylor album. I find the sound to be good (7/10), except on the (unlisted) alternate tracks which seem to come from a different source. Parts of this set are available the single CD release "Trance" (Black Lion).
  19. I don't think this set sold very well, so I don't understand why they repeat the same concept with the John McLaughlin 20+ CD set. I would have bought the Shakti material, but I'm not a fan of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and his later projects, so I have to pass on this set too.
  20. Hey Pete ... let's eat ... more meat was that a line by Dizzy?
  21. Check this thread: Poll: Miles Davis - Complete Montreux (20CD box) Does it sell?
  22. Yes, everything is correct, except for the last part: Suppose you had the permanent cookie set ("Remember me" option) and you forgot to log out. If somebody else uses the PC after you (even after it was shut down) and goes to organissimo.org/forum, he will be automatically logged in as "king ubu" and be able to post under that name. That's why the log in page warns that this option should not be used on shared PCs. If the other user has his own organissimo account, he can log out as "king ubu" and log in again with his own user/pass. As far as shared PCs at work and in the family are concerned, every regular user should have his own personal Windows account, with own desktop shortcuts, bookmarks, logins, internet history etc. A guest account can be set up for visitors. Multi-user capabilities are an essential feature of Windows NT4, 2000 and XP. With Windows 95/98/Me they are very limited. Edit: Now I see you probably mean that the other user has his own *Windows* user account, right? Well in that case the last paragraph of my answer applies. Every Windows user has his own Internet Explorer cookies. Other browsers like Netscape or Opera can be configured for a multi-user environment too.
  23. No, it's only a privacy issue for you (someone else posting with your account). It depends if a permanent or temporary browser cookie has been set: If you choose the "remember me" option when log in, a permanent cookie with your (encrypted) login details will be saved on the PC, and you will be logged in automatically when you return to the board, even if the PC has been switched off in between sessions. If you don't use the "remember me" option, a temporary cookie will be set, that is valid for that browsing session only. When you close the browser, it is deleted. Unfortunatley, the "remember me" option is ticked by default on the log in page, so if you are on a public computer and forget to change to "No" when you log in, a permanent cookie will be set, which will only be deleted when you click on log out, but not when you simply close the browser.
  24. Are you sure about copyprotection? This should be indicated on the jewel case or the CD. Very few jazz CDs are protected, only EMI (Blue Note) Europe does this AFAIK. I've had a few CDs too that could not be played in some CD drives, but it had nothing to do with copyprotection.
